The tank tops are obscuring the decorative gourds.

A. They're called sweater vests, not tank tops. Tank tops are those white sleeveless shirts that trailer trash puts on when beating their spouses and kids.

B. I thought they were ugly when I was a kid in the 70s and I see nothing to make me revise that opinion.

Traditionally tank tops are not as tight as the undershirt, but the names have become interchangeable over the years.

The white sleeveless shirt is an undershirt, called a "Wife beater".

Fark user imageView Full Size

The term came from a guy in Detroit who beat his wife and he was wearing one with baked bean stains on it.

Wife beaters were prominent in cities especially with Italians and Irish sitting on stoops.

They are not germane to white folk.

My Cajun grandfather would wear one at night when he came in from the fields to read the newspaper in.

I never really wear them unless I have AC problems or need to do some work where it is hot.

And I am Colombian/Cajun.

As someone said, farkin' illiterates.

A tank top is an undershirt (aka "wife beater"), or it's the really, really tight sleeveless tops some women wear occasionally.

They're wearing sweater vests. And anyone, including google, calling it a "tank top" is on par with the pants I saw at Target a few years back, labeled "Khaki"... and they were blue. Or the Dodge Stealth car... which I NEVER saw in any color but flaming red.

The British term for what we call a tank top is singlet.

As someone who spent 19 years in the basement of my now retired boss' house built in the 20's with my light source being a frosted window that didn't latch properly...

Im soooo glad I now work from my own bedroom. Working at home is awesome. And it is warm. No more 'why are my hands stiff? Oh, they're blue from the cold. Time to go grab coffee in the kitchen... i mean break room' or 'dammit, the heater at my desk has now sucked all the moisture out of the air.'

And no commute. I do not miss driving to work... or stoplights. Nearest stop lights i have to deal with are 7 or 8 miles away.

It's the Grauniad, and the regular UK edition, not the US one, so it's almost always cold enough there to wear long sleeves and/or a knit sweater of some kind.
