(YouTube)   Know what happens when you fire a 12-gauge shotgun round outside the barrel right next to a water balloon? You will if you watch this video. Difficulty: If you think you already know what will happen you're probably wrong   (youtube.com) divider line

Outside the barrel? A big puff of smoke mostly.

Apparently, the correct answer involved what sounded like the soundtrack to Prune.

I guess I WAS wrong.

Without the barrel and chamber to contain and direct the energy, I don't need to click to know it's a whole lotta nuthin'.  The shot will not achieve anything close to enough velocity to do damage a pliable object like a water balloon, all the energy will go every which way but toward the target.

So, mostly a big puff of smoke. Also, you forgot the music.

I watched the video to see what a high-caliber round looks like when fired outside the barrel. Everything happened pretty much the way I expected it to, but I was really surprised when all the shot bounced off the balloon, even though the balloon was about 6 inches away from the shell.

I imagine firing double-ought buck or heavier steel shot instead of the light birdshot in the video would have more power, but I was already wrong about this scenario.

Wow, that happened way slower than I expected.

Two things I learned:

1: Shotguns fire a lot slower than I thought
2: Body armor should be made out of balloons

It's literally "I am rubber, you are glue, your shot bounces off me and sticks to you."

Outside the barrel and without a barrel seem to mean two different things to me.

And gamers will be like: Still needs more FPS. Too much stutter.

Huh, pretty much what I thought would happen happened.

Seeing it in slow motion was pretty cool though.

Linear vs Cubic: an example.

Not to mention the space the expanding gas of the shotgun shell's propellant fills is basically infinite.

This is also why you can hold a lit firecracker in an outstretched palm of your hand and suffer no harm besides a strong sting and burn but if you clench your fist around it....

I was surprised that the majority of the shot actually hit the balloon.  I was expecting more dispersal.

I was close. I thought the shot would not have much forward momentum, since it wasn't confined in the chamber when it went off, but I underestimated how very little it would have and the resiliency of a water balloon.

Let's put some duct tape around one of those and see what happens

Wadding helps. Also path of least resistance, but likewise I expected more momentum.

Someone, somewhere is going to watch this video and fire a shotgun at their buddy, kill them and wonder what went wrong.

*reads headline*

"Pretty sure the shell would split wide open without the barrel to hold it together, and the pellets would probably travel forward a bit but without enough energy to damage much of anything."

*watches video*

"Well whaddaya know, I was right."

Rippling of the water balloon looked cool though.

Inside of a barrel it's too dark to see.

/sorry, I tried to resist

Outside the barrel you'd have more to fear from brass shrapnel than the bullet.
Heavy lead mass in front(the bullet), heavy mass behind(the breach face), nothing to contain the explosion, the energy blows off to the side and caries fragments with it.

Keep in mind that looks like a light trap load so it didn't have much powder to begin with. But with the case splitting open like that not all of the powder would have burned either.

While I'm here and going off topic. If you like puzzle problem solving games, Prune is quite good. The soundtrack is really good as well.

I'd love to know the FPS and what kind of camera that was shot with.

i set those up as a perimeter alarm when im working alone. i but bear banger shells in them though.. a little louder, but not much.

Same difference between burning a pinch of gunpowder and setting off a firecracker.

2020-09-23 11:04:14 PM
That was disappointing. Can we try it the other way now?

All you really need is to have a high brass shell, more of the explosion will be directed towards the front, crimp end.

Side of shell splits open above the brass, blows unburned powder everywhere, leaves lead shot entirely inside because the crimp is stronger than the sidewall of the shell?
-
Yup, pretty close. Surprised the crimp even opened there. Usually doesn't.

Yeah. It's why I load my home-defense shotgun with light birdshot, even though a lot of people recommend double-ought buck. The light birdshot still has a lot of stopping power, especially if you have the time to shoot more than once.

But it runs a much lower risk of overpenetration; the individual pellets might as well be .380 short, depending on which variety you're using. They'll penetrate walls.
