This is why the GOP is going ALL IN.

They've spent 40+ years building an ethnic based coalition with a shrinking demographic, that's almost certain to be unable to win the Presidency in 2024. If they lose this round they'll regroup, and rebrand, and rebuild with a new coalition eventually- but it'll take many many years.

A more viable path for them is to make elections not matter anymore.

No, that's been shown not to work, particularly since raerae explicitly said they tried.  What I was asking is what he needs from the Democratic Party in order to convince him to vote.  It might help us gain insight into why other voters are planning on voting third-party or abstaining.

Republicans see demographics as destiny and feel slighted that as whites become a plurality and the last few Southern population centers turns their states purple the chances they will have majority support for their viewpoints will be swallowed by the sea of Other who are going to change the country from what it would be if everything was static.

Democrats feel slighted that norms that came into being in the last half of the 20th century have been violated to maximize power and influence by Republicans to ensure that their opinions are still strongly represented in the system even after they no longer hold the reigns of power.

Both sides are convinced they are seeing a future that is fundamentally unfair to their worldview, and that something has to be done about it.

I hate this reasoning because it's really just outsourcing your civic duties.  The reason that California is reliably blue is because Democratic voters reliably vote there in large numbers.  Looking at that and going "Guess I don't need to help and I can do whatever I want" is lazy and dangerous thinking.

I'm optimistic about the reduction in prejudice in future generations because information flows so freely now. Trump may think it's possible to brainwash young people that way but that's because in the era he was young, information was tightly controlled by those in charge. In today's world young people can see and interact with all sorts of people from different backgrounds. About the only people who can be brainwashed like in the old days are young people trapped in an insular community without the means to communicate with others. But those people are being brainwashed anyways, any new effort to do it is a waste of time because he'll be preaching to the converted. The portion of people unconverted but vulnerable to it is becoming smaller and smaller.

I filled out the form as an undecided voter. Tl;dr is, I'm (((concerned))) about Biden's ability to unfark everything that has gone wrong this year, but I'm also concerned about all the crimes and corruption and lies and death that comes with Trump.

"I'm concerned about Joe Biden's ability to bring the economy back from this depression and to improve America's covid response, but I'm also concerned about Trump's dismantling of American democratic institutions and the systems of checks and balances, as well as the amount of corruption we've seen within DHS, Department of Education, Health and Human Services, and the fact that he prefers to blame blue state governors when something goes wrong in their state instead of providing government assistance to American citizens in time of need."

Birnone: sithon: That's why they're cheating. They see the writing on the wall. It's also why Trump is starting his "patriotic education" fund , in order to brainwash some young people into being republicans

People are lazy. It is just as easy for racists to flow their BS into the minds of the intellectually lazy. Look at Cambridge Analytica. With targeted misinformation they helped win many elections. Your optimism is misplaced

transporter_ii: BMFPitt: People have been confidently declaring this since at least GW Bush's first term.

It is happening, just not as fast as some of us would like. A lot of the assholes we all hate now, what is fixing to happen to them, they can't buy their way out of this time (at least not yet). They are all at the end of their lives.

Not to mention, the current administration is going out of its way to kill old people.

Pretty much can't see it improving for the GOP, either. Unless just getting old makes everyone an asshole. Not really seeing that. But it could be, I guess.

But that's the point of packing the federal courts (up to the SC) with lifetime appointees. That's going to be the last stand.

Demographics don't matter if you suppress their votes.

The population most effected by COVID is African Americans.

austerity101: forgotmydamnusername: raerae1980: Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: raerae1980: it really all hinges on which party gets more turnout.

Which party gets turn out AND where they turn out.  An extra 50,000 Democrats turning out in CA is different than an extra 50,000 turning out in PA.

For real, Dude.  Hubby got discouraged the other day and started talking about voting 3rd party and i tried to talk him out of it.   But he's more Gen-X than me, and wasn't budgen.  His apathy was showing.   This was before RBG's death, though.

That's not really about GenX, that's just pigheadedness and political science illiteracy showing. Although IIRC you're in S. California. Given that Trump has a zero percent chance in California, your husband does have more latitude to waste his vote and yet not fark the rest of us over than he would in Ohio.

I hate this reasoning because it's really just outsourcing your civic duties.  The reason that California is reliably blue is because Democratic voters reliably vote there in large numbers.  Looking at that and going "Guess I don't need to help and I can do whatever I want" is lazy and dangerous thinking.

We're Central American ancestry majority these days. The Republican Party wrote off that segment of us decades ago, and nothing has changed. Trumpism doesn't have much appeal for younger, well educated elites, either, and there are quite a lot of those people in the coastal metroplexes. Biden is up by nearly 40 points. A few percentage points worth of idiots and lazy bastards really won't be able to wreck that. If Trump is down by less than 10 in your state, though, best not mess around.

Well if young people voted as reliably as old people have we'd be talking about President-Elect Sanders.

(._. )

Sorry; might've been a bit of a low blow but...I really feel for Bernie that he felt that young vote would pull through for him and it didn't.

Unobtanium: This is why the have fealty to Trump. They need their "originalist" judges in the courts. Some of them have been pissed off that the 1960s Civil Rights laws were upheld by the SCOTUS.

Some are pissed others got the vote.

What do you think it would take to get him to vote for Biden?

I would suggest blowjobs. Lots of blowjobs.

/works on me

No amount of blowjobs could get me to even lie to a Tinder hookup about voting for trump.

I don't know. I'm a principled moderate who is still uncommitted. I'd take some direct lobbying by the slutty caucus.

My voting coalition is the "desprasexuals". We're mostly straight but we take what we can get.
