Every once and a while, I think there's hope for humanity.

TLDR: Eleanor Roosevelt did modernize the White House Kitchen, but then she put an acquaintance that had zero culinary skills in charge of planning the meals.

It was a sacrifice the Roosevelts made to help lead and demonstrate. They understood that the Nation was suffering from food insecurity so the $.05 lunch and the $.10 dinner were a social campaign.

But yeah, the food was allegedly garbage and often not hot.

But there is a lesson here.

To be fair, the Roosevelts' food wasn't much worse than what most Americans ate during the Depression. Nutrition, not taste, was paramount in a time of bread lines and soup kitchens, and Eleanor was trying to use her table as a way of encouraging and inspiring other Americans to get through a uniquely challenging historical moment.

We really don't make first couples the way they used to.

The Fala part of the speech is brilliant, and it's the part of the speech that everyone remembers (Orson Wells helped FDR with the writing and his timing).  But it's just the last few minutes of a speech that is well worth listening to.  FDR was delivering the speech to the Teamsters Union, and he vigorously defended unions against predatory capital, called out the GOP falsehoods about the economy, and actually compared the Republicans to Goebbels - this, mind you, was while Goebbels was still alive.  FDR was absolutely vicious, and the crowd loved it.  As he said:

The whole purpose of Republican oratory these days seems to be to switch labels. The object is to persuade the American people that the Democratic Party was responsible for the 1929 crash and the depression, and that the Republican Party was responsible for all social progress under the New Deal.

Things haven't changed much in 76 years.  Except for one thing: Democrats actually had balls back then.

Right? what kind of president would try to live like the people he was leading?  He should have eaten caviar off of golden plate during the depression.  But then I don't think FDR had to show off in order to pretend to be rich.

I'm convinced the problem with most conservatives is sublimated feelings of sexual inadequacy.   Case in point, Roosevelt slung more cock from a wheelchair than, well, honestly any republican I have ever met in my life (literally).
