Clinton's PV lead of 3 million votes was less than 3% of the total votes cast. Combine that with the 42% of eligible voters who didn't vote at all, and we can pretty safely conclude that Americans, by and large, are stupid.

You do realize that Beta's supposedly better image quality was based on the commercial version, not the home version I hope. Also consider that the Beta tape setup had a host of other (mechanical) costs associated with the loading and unloading mechanisms being more costly and (to the tape) intrusive.

Granted I stayed out of that format war, I was poor and just waited.

The only thing people consistently are here is stupid.  They're openly, belligerently, vocally proud of it and violently opposed to anyone who isn't stupid.  The major religion in the US isn't Christianity, it's Stupidity -  Americans literally worship it.  The entire culture is built around celebrating it, promoting it, and showing disdain and hostility to anything that isn't it.  The hell they're not stupid - they're a damn CULT of stupidity that constantly tries and more often than not succeeds to attain new horizons of stupidity.

There are many reasons I shouldn't vote now.

I am on the Redneck Riviera, a stretch of land between the Florida Panhandle and lower Alabama where bigots of all stripes drive by maskless with their large Trump flags flying in their huge SUVs to ironically eat at many Mexican restaurants along the way.  Hurricane Sally didn't help my situation since now I'm out one apartment and in the midst of moving into a new one, all while helping with relief efforts assisting families who barely speak English while looking over their shoulder.

All the while, I keep hearing the same thing over and over again.  It'll never change.  Nothing is going to happen.  We're just the face that waits for the Orwellian boot to stamp in our face over and over.  The other side has too many people who will never change their minds and they're backed by old senile white people with money and all the while Russia keeps trolling us as if people are going to decide democracy is useless and start doing what they're doing.

See, plenty of reasons.  And yet I'm still going to vote.  In person.

Wanna know why?  Because it's not about me.  It's about a process that though fundamentally flawed, is the only true safeguard we have towards full-on anarchy. No matter how farked the country gets, I will have a voice.  One tally mark against the rest is still a civic duty, and if my side doesn't win, hey, at least I have my proof that I spoke up.

Absolutely. There are maybe a couple hundred square miles scattered throughout that enormous expanse where all the people capable of dressing themselves live. You can't travel from one of those tiny enclaves to another without passing through hundreds of miles of Alabama.

There is a Silent Majority.

But they are center-left, if not left, depending on the definitions you want to use.  When you strip off the propagandized labels and names for center- and left- ideas, they are overwhelmingly supported.

And that Silent Majority has been systematically disenfranchised, depressed, insulted, and ignored -- and it works, because they are relentlessly told that they are in the minority by the media machine that is controlled by the right and fuelling the RWNJs irrational, unjustified confidence and arrogance.

Been saying that forever... been mocked forever.  Nice to see it's finally not just me any more.

Every first-world country managed to get out of fascism after about 10 years. Yes, the cycle is beginning for us, and yes, we're arguably a rich third-world country instead of a first-world one -- but if you believe America can climb out of this in 30 years, you should vote. It may not effect change, but it sends a message to future generations that we believe in them.

In 2018, there were 153.07 million people registered to vote in the United States. That's only 79% (or 79/100) of eligible voters, according to Pew Research.

Of those eligible voters, only 59% voted in 2016... we can call them 'likely voters', but that number can fluctuate, but is what most polls base their percentage (or fraction) on. That's 59/100.

Of that 59/100 of likely voters, only 35%, or 7/20 steadily support Trump. So yeah, that's not a fraction. It's a fraction of a fraction of a fraction. And it nowhere near half of anything.

Since it's kiiinda on-topic, and I'm a GIANT fan of his, here's a great recent take re: red states v. blue states, and how even in the most "completely" Red counties, there are still ~35+% blue, and vice versa.  The best point he makes is that it is really important for progressives to be vocal and visible, if they feel safe being so:

It's a little longer than most of his, but still only 10 minutes.

We have allowed the money- and oppressor-Right to engineer a "majority" and astroturf that position, then amplify it artificially (and recruit the biggest, most aggressive dimwits as supporters), then convince us that their majority is persuasive and compelling and unending and real and important and should be in charge.  FARK that.

As for being visible, I can't recommend it more highly if you're in a majority-"conservative" area -- the number of quiet, scared, grateful comments or kind looks I got just for wearing a Pride-flag cap in rural-Red MD shocked me -- but I am also freakishly tall and not-round, and those grateful looks were outnumbered by glares and mumbled indecipherable comments, but the standard Trump-Flag-waving MAGAt was too cowardly to say or do shiat to my face, and I certainly didn't advertise on my car or anything else that could be vandalized when I wasn't watching.

Did you notice the bits about gerrymandering, the electoral college, and the Senate (not to mention all the other voter suppression that goes on)? The majority routinely votes for more liberal candidates and policies, and is routinely ignored because the electoral system is rigged against them. Look at the last presidential election, for example: Clinton had a clear majority of the votes cast, but look who got the job.

Oh, it won't even be that smooth.

There will be a general default on US debt, massive devaluation of the dollar, unemployment will skyrocket far higher than under Covid. The nation will shut down and tens of millions will die from violence, fires, disease, and malnutrition. If the markets are even open assume at least 90% on average. People will try to get out. Canada will have a devil of a time securing their border.

It won't even take that long. Dominos fall pretty fast.
