You know the gop is going to stomp their feet and whine while gaslighting Americans regardless of what the democrats do, right?

McConnell personally reduced the court from nine to eight justices for more than a year. You bet your ass this is ok.

This assumes that the Democrats get the chance. With the Supreme Court packed with Trumpanzies, they are entirely likely to hand him the presidency when he inevitably challenges the election in court.

Frankly, Trump may have already mortally wounded Democracy, and entirely too many Americans will Gleefully welcome their new Dictator.

Democrats should shut up about their plans to cheat until AFTER the election.

Top choice for RBG's seat says that Supreme Court nominees must not change the ideological makeup of the court. Well, to be fair, she only said only a conservative justice can take a seat previously held by a conservative justice; not clear if the rule applies to liberal justices as well.

Honestly the problem with the Democratic Party is they don't "Just Win".

The old quote is  "Winning isn't everything... it's the only thing".

When you win, people like you.  When you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, well, you kind of get labeled as losers.  And reptile brains don't want to be associated with losers.

I'm not sure about gleefully.  Some will, yes.  The increasingly mentally deranged that swear unquestioned loyalty.

The real danger is the complacent masses.  A Trump dictatorship won't "look" like your typical 3rd world dictatorship.  It will have a veneer if legitimacy.  And they will pull out every stop to try and goose the economy.  They want the right people (I.e white people) to feel wealthy and secure again.  Everybody else can beg for scraps, which honestly, most people are content to do.  If an attitude of "well, at least I have a job" attitude sets in, then they have won.  People will just accept death and a permanent hegemony based on corporate rule.

Ya know, when I think about punching McConnell in the face, I get creeped out just by looking at his skin, and I don't want to make any contact with his skin. I may well feel better about whacking him in the face with a shovel, though. I will see how that all goes.

2020-09-23 2:40:56 PM
They shouldn't court pack unless they can simultaneously pass a law mandating 13 justices, no more, no less. Otherwise it'll keep happening on both ends.

2020-09-23 2:41:23 PM
It feels like the article presumes and should have a "Don't start sucking dicks yet." warning on it somewhere.

2020-09-23 2:42:45 PM
The article makes a false assumption that this stupid trash cares about abortion. The most effective way to reduce abortions is to provide women with information about and access to birth control. They will cry out that both abortion and birth control (which they equate with promiscuity) are evil, and that their strong moral principles prevent them from considering a lesser of two evils proposition because that will also be morally wrong. Think about that. Ending a baby genocide is not a good enough reason to agree to birth control to discourage abortion due to some solid moral foundation. One could almost admire that conviction if it wasn't total bullshiat.

Ask those conservatives who grudgingly accept that Trump is incompetent, crass, has no family values and so on... and they'll excuse their vote as a lesser of two evils proposition. They are more than willing to consider immoral choices under the banner of lesser of two evils. But only when they feel like it. So every abortion that happens because they won't support birth control is just them deciding that they're ok with it.

Pretty soon everyone in the US will be a justice. We'll have to start granting justice positions to Canadians, then Mexicans. Then Europe and Asia will be consumed by SCOTUS. When the whole world is converted into justices, we'll have to spread out to the stars.

The Dems need to stop letting concepts like fairness keep them from winning.

In order to affect change, you need power.  The only way to get power is to play dirty.

In the words of Ice-T, don't hate the player, hate the game.

I do not see why the Democrats insist on fighting with their arms and legs tied behind their backs anymore.  Decorum, tradition, and "rules" are done.  Republicans have clearly demonstrated they will no longer be working with them on running the country, and in fact will blame them when their own caucus can't stomach their cruelty and incompetence.  Scorched earth until further notice.  Trigger every "nuclear" option as New Deal level changes are the only thing that will change the conditions for most people in this country.

Alien Robot: What if Trump wins re-election and the Republicans pack the court since the Democrat opposition says it's OK now?

Completely legal and constitutional if they want to do that. Does it make a difference if there is a 6-3 court vs. a 50-3 court if a large portion of the country feels that it was obtained unethically?

Because Trump's own conceit right now is that he needs a 6-3 Supreme Court to assure his legal challenges are approved, because he doesn't trust a 5-3 Supreme Court to find in his favor. If the Supreme Court delivers a win for Trump and then he packs it can you see how that looks to people?

You can even argue that the GOP established that the Senate has the power to change the number of seats on the Court without legislation. They changed it to 8 in 2016 and then back to 9 in 2017. Some prominent members of the party even said they planned to keep it at 8 indefinitely if Clinton won (McCain, Cruz, and Burr along with Cato and The Federalist pushed for this)

Well yeah. Because the only thing shiat-eating republicans understand is when you take a boot and smash their necks down against the curb until you can feel vertebrae grinding.  As long as you look past their obvious sexual arousal while you're doing it that is.

Mitch has once again proven that he's a craven liar who's fully invested in party victories vs country. So, hopefully, the rest of his years will be spent watching this bullshiat used against him.

Is removing the filibuster crooked?  Is not confirming judges crooked? Is adding to the court crooked?  No, these are changes that have long lasting and drastic consequences. How's about we swing some of those consequences in favor of the 99% of the electorate for once?

And this is where the Democrats need to finally grow a spine and say "go fark yourself, Mitch".

If they can't manage to do that after all that he and Trump has done to dismantle democracy in this country, then they never will and we are indeed truly farked.

Except that it would have to be challenged and tried at the ... newly stacked Supreme Court. Find some democratic toadies and push them through.

The 'so much for the tolerant left' posts on this thread are pathetic and hilarious.

Farking morons thought we were being unfair and authoritarian when we were playing by the rules... the last 12 years just taught most of this country, especially those Gen X and younger, that anyone categorizing themselves as a Republican are liars and violent assholes, the lot of them. Until then... buckle up.

Also something to keep in mind: even if Democrats do decide to add seats they are not going to add enough to put them into the majority. They are going to say two more seats are a fair trade off to maintain the minority on the court with Chief Justice Roberts as the swing vote. They don't want to be seen as trying to dominate the Republican Party because they find that distasteful.

Republicans will certainly claim it is exactly as bad, but I highly doubt that there is a political will to actually be the monsters that Republicans imagine them to be.
