Beat me to it.  I saw the headline and thought of Jackie Robinson immediately, Hitchhiker's Guide second.

After reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy I firmly believed Douglas Adams had a simple yet stupid reason for the number. It only took me a week to figure it out. I tried math and logic and eventually decided to dumb it down to the level of an author who wrote everything tongue in cheek but always had a reason.
In the original radio scripts, the first telling, Deep Thought is asked What is "The answer to Life! The Universe! and Everything!"

It is 42 characters in the first version of the "question" asked to Deep Thought.
Essentially the question had no real meaning to Deep Thought so he decided to wait a really long time and pass the buck in a bureaucratically stupid manner relative to the satiric nature of the books.

I can't think of anyone or anything but Jackie Robinson. Maybe the movie 42 about Jackie Robinson but that's it.
