The Navy (and all the services) does not like to be told what to buy and how to use it. You tell them the strategic objectives you want to meet, they'll decide the equipment and training.

But politics...

Where can you find pleasure
Search the world for treasure
Learn science technology
Where can you begin to make your dreams all come true
On the land or on the sea
Where can you learn to fly
Play in sports and skin dive
Study oceanography
Sign up for the big band
Or sit in the grandstand
When your team and others meet

Of course, they had to expand.

Interestingly, this might not be one of Trump's usual colossal fark-ups. China's been expanding its sphere of influence in the Pacific, and an increased naval strength is a deterrent to a lot of the farkery they try.

Nah. We decided carriers are dumb now. We need to spend that money on more misdirected, expensive disasters like the LCS.

As long as they're flush with cash, and having just finished binging Norsemen, I'm gonna sell the Navy on my Block 0, Mk 1 Shipboard Tactical Nithing Pole System (STNPS). It will use advanced magic technology to invoke misfortune and accidents at a distance of tens of nautical miles. Those Chinese ships are going to get so much nith on them.

I'll make the real money on Block 1, which will actually work, and Block 2 which will be semi-interoperable with other combat systems, but will break the AN/SPY-6. (Block 3 will fix that, and I'm still working out what it will break.)

Oh great, the Navy, they've done a great job of protecting us from the pandemic, from Russian election interference, and from all  the other modern threats we're facing.

Don't get me wrong, we need a Navy, and a reasonably strong one, to protect our national interests.... but it can't be at the expense of letting all our other national security threats run amok.

Bears repeating, worlds biggest Navy and can't even avoid running into container ships. It's obvious we have prioritized pork spending on moar boats! Over any tactical consideration. Downsize the number of ships and spend more time training sailors to actually operate and maintain the damn things.

No I know it will never happen because our Senate and congress only cares about adding more pork.

Not only is our navy the largest, out of the next ten largest modern navies, seven are allies that have mutual defense treaties with the US. India, China and Russia are the other three. In the event of a global conflict, India will do its best to try and stay neutral. Failing that, they are more likely to end on the US side, than with either China or Russia.

My cousin-in-law, a Master Chief with several decades of service describes the Navy as "crumbling". Enlisted with very poor High School educations need a lot of time and effort to bring them up to what used to be a standard baseline. I don't think more ships is going to help that problem. One of the unanticipated side-effects of trying (and succeeding) to destroy public school education. Ooops!

I believe what he says about the quality of recruits, and how they have to spend way too much of the time allotted for training on getting their basic skills up to speed. Which causes them to have to train on deployment, which causes incidents like driving into a container ship. That didn't seem to happen a lot until lately. Why is that? I also believe this because my friends that are professors at the University of Texas here in Austin tell me the same thing. I don't really think this is some far-out "war story" he's telling, it's objectively true.

Cutting military spending doesn't mean you hate America and until idiots can comprehend that we are going to have Enough military worshipers to effect elections.   We need to cut our military budget by half and divert the funds to health care and education.  Increase top tax rates back to what they were in the 1960s And wealth inequality and poverty will plummet.  It's a shame there is a dedicated group of the population Explicitly against these solutions.

Oh stop it, the Navy can find enough qualified ET's, EM's and MM's for their nuclear fleet, they have plenty of smart sailors, the ones who washout of nuke school are attitude cases and get sent to the fleet (mostly non-nuclear) for 6 years, & not b/c they aren't smart enough, they probably just salted their food before tasting it or weren't deferential enough to some ego-maniac.

There are dumb sailors but to say they're "All morans" is just a gen x'er b*tching about the next generations.

When America first, at Heaven's command
Arose from out the azure main
Arose, arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter, the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain:
"Rule Americania! Americania rule the waves:
"Americans never, never, never will be slaves."The nations, not so blest as thee,
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall
Must, in their turns, to tyrants fall;
While thou shalt flourish, shalt flourish great and free,
The dread and envy of them all.
"Rule Americannia! Americannia rule the waves:
"Americans never, never, never will be slaves."Still more majestic shalt thou rise,
More dreadful, from each foreign stroke
More dreadful, dreadful from each foreign stroke;
As the loud blast, the blast that tears the skies,
Serves but to root thy native oak.
"Rule Americannia! Americannia rule the waves:
"Americans never, never, never will be slaves."

Carriers are pretty dumb now.  It's like building battleships in 1940.  Yes they are big and bad but they are already obsolete and just don't know it yet.

The next time a serious war is fought air Superiority will be obtained by drones not piloted aircraft,  and carriers will just be big targets for hypersonic missiles
