Germany is literally building a pipeline to tie itself to Russian energy. The US has been trying to stop them but there's a limit to how much we can pressure the EU.

This is the same problem as the US and China. We know it will end badly, but people push back against decoupling because there's so much money to be made.

Maybe the hope is that one day Putin/Xi Jinping will be dead, and western interests can exploit the power vacuum(s) to take over?

I mean, I doubt it. I believe that greed is the driving force, but it is a nice, comfortable delusion.

And both the government and public are largely opposed to halting the project for any reason short of open war, it would seem.

Nope - Germany and the EU will be continuing to fund Russian hostility towards the West for the foreseeable future. So thanks for that, guys.

Probably in Russia, not likely in China.  The risk with Russia is it's going to be 1991 all over again.  All Putin's deputies will vie for power, and since they're used to using violence pretty much openly it'll get ugly fast.

For all Xi's crap, he touts a 100 year plan.  You can't have that conversation without discussing succession plans.

People always say the Chinese plan for the long term.
Of course the ccp once caused a famine because they mass killed all their birds and let insects wipe out their food crops, killing over forty million people.

The people say a lot of things.

My major hope is that when Biden becomes Pres, he teams up with the EU and sanctions Putin and his oligarchs into penury.

And they just relentlessly cyber attack critical Russian infrastructure.

The plan was to bring China into the 20th century. And the plan worked, notwithstanding 40 million dead peasants.

China's plans have always included "bury bodies, carry on as if nothing happened". Always. A nation can do that if it's been burying millions of bodies since 1000 BC.

To be fair, that advancement wasn't because of their planning.
China had made itself into a backwater that could only be used for cheap soldiers or proxy wars.   Nixon went to China (as only a non-communist could) and plied them into opening up their economy.  The west had hoped that the tempting fruits of capitalism would drive back communist corruption. It was the same plan the British hoped for when signing off Hong Kong.  Maybe if they were given an example of how this works they'd find the means to reform.

The CCP had, and still has, other plans. The money brought benefits and its allowed them to modernize in many ways. But the autocracy and central planning are still there and people don't recognize how destructive it is. What it learned was that greed could be manipulated to turn capitalists against capitalists.

You are correct in that there is nothing a nation cannot do if its willing to stack the corpses high enough. That is what makes China dangerous because there are no tactics that are off limits, from media manipulation to war and assassination.

It doesn't create progress tho. You can steal the appearance of progress by copying other nations tools, but you have to sacrifice the spirit of it in order to stay in control.  You cant let millions of engineers free wheel and invent things in a place where the boss must remain the absolute authority.
In the end all they really want is control and, once they've achieved it, stagnation is quick to set back in.

/Even after causing their own famine, they never admitted fault or learned from it.
/They just replaced birds with another target. Parts of that program are still ongoing.
