Irrelevant, and if used against her in the hearings, a violation of the Constitution of the United States of America:

https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution-transcript
Article. VI.
All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

If you're saying she can't be confirmed because of her religious beliefs (or lack thereof, if that applied), that's a flat-out violation of Article VI.

Degree inflation is real.. an associates degree is like a high school degree of 40 years ago, an bachelors degree is equivalent to an associates degree and so on and so on.  The real world knows that academia is failing and is continually upping their degree requirements because graduates are just really that bad.

Graffito: gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote? Shouldn't something like this be a 2/3rds vote?

Well, the Democrats decided to get rid of the 60 vote requirement for all nominees except Supreme Court Justices because they wanted to stop Republicans from using the filibuster.

Then, when the Dems tried to use the filibuster against Gorsuch, the Republicans decided to return the favor by removing the Supreme Court exception.

Meanwhile, Democrats (like Obama) are fond of saying that the filibuster is racist (despite engaging in the practice), but now find themselves unable to do anything because they put the wheels into motion to limit the ability to use the filibuster to stop nominees.

So in short, the Dems decided to play hardball because Republicans wouldn't just go along with what the Dems wanted, and in the process, they shot themselves in the foot.

Remember this story when you hear Schumer talk about how they should pack the court. It wasn't that long ago that Republicans controlled all three branches, and it will happen again. At that point, if court packing has occurred, expect to see as many justices as there are states in the union

Wrong.  The Dems went nuclear because McConnell put obstructing Obama above the functioning of the U.S. government.   Positions were going vacant because the Repubs wouldn't confirm anyone besides who they wanted.  In fact, they weren't even willing to approve people they approved of it gave Obama a chance to accomplish something.

Repubs weren't willing to vet candidates honestly and approve them based on qualifications.  THAT's how we got here.  Remember that when Schumer goes nuclear in January,

It has nothing to do with that.  I watched the State Board of Land Surveyors change their tests back in the 80's and moved away from tests that measured actual work experience to being more academic oriented and the quality of Land Surveyors in the state went in the toilet.

Academia exists to perpetuate itself.. not to actually educate or determine suitability for anything outside of academia.

raius: gar1013: raius: gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote?

The only reason the Democrats removed it was because the Republicans filibustered everything.  They weren't letting Obama appoint any judges since McConnell decided his primary purpose was to stop anything Obama did.  The Democrats should remove the filibuster, all it does is prevent anything from happening since the Republicans act like a petulant child

Lol. You think Dems don't try to use the filibuster to stop things.

At any rate, glad you agree with the changes that render the Dems impotent in this situation.

I suppose you could get to be a pilot to transfer some "goods" to some "clients" but look at legitimate job listings. There aren't a whole lot of above minimum wage jobs that don't require a degree,

Times have really changed since our schools have tanked.  I've been through 4 difference career changes with just a high school degree (1978) and I have been into the 6 figure range for about the last 20 years.  Would my career path been easier with a degree?  Up to a certain point yes, but after 20 years it becomes irrelevant and your track record speaks louder.

Would you support the equivalent of a bar exam for politicians?  I'm not saying they need a Phd, they just need to have basic competency for the job.

That is a good question... In a sense, our entire system from municipal to federal elected positions should serve as a farm type of system where those that get to the federal level have already demonstrated their abilities while working up the governmental chain.  The next issue is that the parties themselves should vet their candidates and should control who can primary in their party.  Trump never should have been allowed to campaign on the Republican ticket and Bernie (a staunch independent until 2016 had contributed nothing to the party) should never have been allowed to run as a democrat.   Party politics should not be about popularity but who is best for the party and the people.

So the answer is that the local, county and state committee members should have already vetted candidates and no one should be able to declare their candidacy and run without their consent.

She will end up on the court. The only move now is to make the GOP pay the ultimate price. Full sweep of the government, ending the filibuster, clear super majority, court packing, adding states to the Union and focusing on getting rid of the EC to get rid of this minority rule bullshiat once and for all.

Attacking her personally, despite how much she may deserve it, will undermine all of that.

Q: Do you need to go to college to become an airline pilot?

A: A bachelor's degree is not required to be an airline pilot. Some airlines do require it, while others do not. I would recommend attending a college or university. Having a degree will give you greater options and leave you in a better position if a medical issue were to prevent you from flying professionally.

Career Requirements
To become a pilot, you need a bachelor's degree in aircraft operations, aviation, aeronautical engineering, or a related field. In addition, you will complete up to two months of ground training and need more than 1,500 hours of flight experience.

Apr 30, 2020

While the regional airlines do not require a bachelor's degree from a reputable college or university, major airlines do. This fact leads us to the next logical question, should you get an aviation degree to become a pilot? The answer is no. Getting an aviation degree or going to an aviation college is not a requirement to become an airline pilot. In fact, major airlines accept any and all bachelor fields and aren't the least bit concerned with what you studied in college. The degree is more of a tool to demonstrate an applicant's ability, discipline, and commitment. So, when choosing a degree major, choose something that you not only enjoy, but also think you could fall back on if necessary.

Pretty amazing, god manifesting a stove like that!

Well, actually what happened was that some dingbat started a grease fire on her stove that burned up the kitchen wall, filled the house with greasy smoke, and destroyed her stove. But, as luck would have it, somebody else in town was getting rid of some old used stove and...(get ready, this is the miraculous part)...gave it to her. Absolutely incredible. Way to go, god. I mean, he could have put out that grease fire, or protected that stove with magic, or stopped the fire from even starting in the first place, but redirecting some crap used appliance from the landfill to her house was the next best miracle. The part where they actually had to drag it through some cruddy ally to get it to her house, instead of it levitating there, or a rental truck being hired on the Holy Credit Card was also a particularly miraculous detail. I know I'm a believer now.

A massive bureaucracy that has over a billion of followers, nearly a half million priests, millions of other religious followers, that has been the bedrock of Europe since the fall of Rome while serving as a pseudo-Marxist outreach throughout Africa, East Asia, and South America?

13 justices, not 18

we have 13 judicial circuits and each of the Justices is supposed to also be the Chief admin judge of a circuit...the number 9 for justices was set when we had nine circuits.  Therefore 13 is merely correctly updating the court.   The fact that it will give dems a 7-6 majority?  well just icing on the cake

Cool.

If Dems pack the court, once we regain control of Congress and the Presidency, we'll expand it to 50...maybe even throw in a few for our various territories as well.

It is a bit strange, but what Catholics and Jews have in common is that the both come from very legalistic faiths with Canon Law and Talmudic law respectively making up a significant part of their belief systems.   I think it inspires a certain "reverence" for secular law as well that lead people to be passionate about the law and judging that makes them tend to stand out ... (Put a less charitable way, they are used to standing on their heads and bending logic like a pretzel from a young age, o law comes naturally)  but it's just a guess

gar1013: raius: gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote?

Cult (n):
1) a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
2) a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
3) a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.

The ACA and Roe vs Wade are on the chopping block. The ACA is getting voted on a week after the election - she will vote against it. Roe vs Wade will be overturned, and that's just the beginning.

If Trump issued an order banning a political candidate from opposing him in the election or some other crazy shiat, with this woman on the court does anybody here think there's be enough opposition to stop him? If so, you don't belong here.

Wrong. She's biased. She not just biased, she's out there on the ledge biased.

With her, "equal justice before the law" is builshirt.

I'm not wrong, and I'm not saying she's not biased. I'm saying that attacking her bias as a political strategy is a terrible idea. Instead you have to protect the things she will dismantle - the ACA, RvW, etc.

Can you be more specific as to why you think I'm wrong?

No. He overwhelming bias disqualifies her. I'd love to see an impartial bar association rating on her.

If he passed the bar exam with only that education than the public has ensured his/her competency.   Career exams are supposed to be a stop gap in making sure academia actually turns out competent people.

The fact a party can't disqualify someone from running for their party never made sense to me.  The party should be responsible for ensuring their candidates are proficient for the job.  You can run as an independent if you don't like them having any say.

dwrash: Fart_Machine: dwrash: Fart_Machine: It requires a BA in aeronautics, aviation, or aerospace science so yes they did go to
a four-year college or university for the academic portion of the program.

So, when choosing a degree major, choose something that you not only enjoy, but also think you could fall back on if necessary.

https://atpflightschool.com/become-a-pilot/airline-career/do-you-need-a-degree-to-be-a-pilot.html

They still don't let you fly the plane just because the other passengers thought your promises to reduce the flight time in half was popular.  You're getting stuck on the degree part, and ignoring the shows basic competency for the job part.

what the hell does that mean? it means she's a sworn life-long member of "people of praise" a "parachurch" group that embraces things like speaking in tongues. this is NOT standard catholic practice or doctrine, the most famous charismatic church in america is probably the pentecostals AKA "holy rollers" and "snake handlers".

barret may be a brilliant woman and an honest legal scholar and practitioner, but make no mistake she herself said:

"I'm just going to identify one way in which I hope that you, as graduates of Notre Dame, will fulfill the promise of being a different kind of lawyer. And that is this: that you will always keep in mind that your legal career is but a means to an end, and as Father Jenkins told you this morning, that end is building the kingdom of God."

this is much MORE dangerous than a hyper-partisan court justice, this woman believes with her whole heart she is on a mission from god. do you think for one second she will let "legal precedent" have more impact on her decisions than reshaping america to be more "godly"?

she's respected. she's smart, she's female, she's conventionally attractive, she's only 48 years old, and she is DANGEROUS to every single american who wishes NOT to live under a theocracy.

We've got to do better this time...

This person is not just a Catholic...lets get that straight.  If she was just Catholic, the teachings of the Catholic Church are public, well known, and scrutinized (obviously not everyone adheres to those beliefs, and everyone is free to say she is a whack job for being Catholic because of transubstantiation or whatever).  The thing is, though, the teachings and rules of "People of Praise" are not public, and their community has a habit of making their members swear some weird fealty to their "head."

So do we want a Supreme Court Justice who will do what her husband or leader tells her?  Forget about Rome telling her what to do.  Thats not the issue here.  The issue is who is actually guiding her.  She will probably laugh this off and say "of course I make my own decisions and think my own thoughts."  But this is a life time appointment.  I cant see this being a good idea.

And to the "religious test" talking point: You can absolutely still object to the content of a nominee's religion. If the nominee is a religious geocentrist, that can absolutely still be disqualifying, as can believing that men and women are not fundamentally equal, or that American government should be explicitly Christian.
