All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Let me play the contrarian here.   SHe can BELIEVE whatever the fark she wants, I don't farking care.  I Care about her judicial qualifications and she has...well, none really.   RBG was a judge of the second highet court in the land, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals (aka the Supreme Court's Waiting room) for 13 years before Clinton nominated her to the SCOTUS.  Prior t that she had been a litigator responsible for winning a landmark case.

Comey-Barrett has almost zero courtroom experience, she was a law prof, and she been a judge on the far less consequential 7th circuit for under 3 years.   Put simply she ain't got the chops for the big leagues no matter WHAT her religious beliefs are.

Don't make the Kavanaugh mistake. Blassey-Ford's allegations were important, but they were the wrong focus.   Kavanaugh committed perjury in his first confirmation hearing to be a federal judge in 2005, and the emails released before his scotus confirmation provided written proof of that.   THAT should have been the focus of the questions by Democratic Senators, the FELONY he committed that made him eligible to be disbarred and not able to even serve as a judge

This person is not just a Catholic...lets get that straight.  If she was just Catholic, the teachings of the Catholic Church are public, well known, and scrutinized (obviously not everyone adheres to those beliefs, and everyone is free to say she is a whack job for being Catholic because of transubstantiation or whatever).  The thing is, though, the teachings and rules of "People of Praise" are not public, and their community has a habit of making their members swear some weird fealty to their "head."

So do we want a Supreme Court Justice who will do what her husband or leader tells her?  Forget about Rome telling her what to do.  Thats not the issue here.  The issue is who is actually guiding her.  She will probably laugh this off and say "of course I make my own decisions and think my own thoughts."  But this is a life time appointment.  I cant see this being a good idea.

If you look up "warning signs of a cult" on the internet, you'll find lists from psychologists and cult-watch organizations with lots of useful bullet points like "Has a large degree of control over members lives," "extreme demands on members time," "discourages outside relationships," and "believes that they have special access to spiritual truth or power that others do not."

These are all important things to look for.

However, if you look up "warning signs of a cult" and follow links to religious cult-watch organizations, you'll see extra bullet points that secular organizations do not have, like "heterodox religious beliefs" or "believes they have a new revelation from God beyond what's in the Bible."

The reason for this is that a lot of Christian churches are functionally cults, but lists like this give them cover as long as the leader isn't claiming he's the second coming of Jesus and trying to sleep with all the members. And if anyone calls them out as such, they do just like in this thread and cry "persecution" up to the heavens.

I was in a Christian cult in college. (On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is an intramural football league and 10 is Jonestown, they were about a 6 or 7.) They didn't forbid you to have outside friends, but they did demand that leaders participated in 4-5 activities a week, (easily 20-25 hours), which sort of caused outside relationships to fade away. They maintained a 1 on 1 accountability structure where you had partners that you'd meet to monitor each other for wrongthink once a week. Most of the people lived in big houses with exclusively other members. About half of the members married other members.

I knew several people for whom this cult wasn't crazy enough, who later moved on to groups that were 8s or 9s, what with living out in the woods to get "spiritual training without distraction" or into compounds where they "trained to engage is spiritual warfare."

But obviously, none of these groups would admit that they were cults - they'd just talk about how they're trying to let people fully devote themselves to Jesus like 1st century Christians and want to see "revival" and how they're using the same Bible as everyone else, they're just trying to take it more seriously.

So, yeah. When it comes to cults, (as in all-encompassing authoritarian religious groups,) it's about about behavior. You can have a relatively mainstream religious beliefs and still be in a cult. And I have no doubt Barret is in one. This is very bad.

I certainly don't want them having power over me, that's for sure, but I don't see anything extra whack-a-doodle about her oath. It's standard fundy Christian social club stuff. You know, the usual whack-a-doodle stuff.

She is part of religious group that was founded in 1971, in Indiana.

It is a special kind of irony that "Christians" don't follow the teachings of Jesus that "is written down, in black and white".

Great, so when enough of these "fundies" are all in positions of power and decide that the rest of us have to abide by their deeply held religious beliefs I suppose you will be the first to hand over your 14 year old daughter to be married off to an adult male of their choosing? Because for some reason all of these Christian groups have no problem with little girls marrying adult men. But the real threat is these nut jobs forcing their medieval bullshiat into public schools, assuming Davos hasn't already eliminated all of them by then.

Well, the Democrats decided to get rid of the 60 vote requirement for all nominees except Supreme Court Justices because they wanted to stop Republicans from using the filibuster.

Then, when the Dems tried to use the filibuster against Gorsuch, the Republicans decided to return the favor by removing the Supreme Court exception.

Meanwhile, Democrats (like Obama) are fond of saying that the filibuster is racist (despite engaging in the practice), but now find themselves unable to do anything because they put the wheels into motion to limit the ability to use the filibuster to stop nominees.

So in short, the Dems decided to play hardball because Republicans wouldn't just go along with what the Dems wanted, and in the process, they shot themselves in the foot.

Remember this story when you hear Schumer talk about how they should pack the court. It wasn't that long ago that Republicans controlled all three branches, and it will happen again. At that point, if court packing has occurred, expect to see as many justices as there are states in the union

we have 13 judicial circuits and each of the Justices is supposed to also be the Chief admin judge of a circuit...the number 9 for justices was set when we had nine circuits.  Therefore 13 is merely correctly updating the court.   The fact that it will give dems a 7-6 majority?  well just icing on the cake

Politician is the only job where being a complete dumbass is seen as a benefit to some people.  Can you imagine if pilots were hired this way?  Sure Frank has all the certification and book learning, but Jack is a straight shooter who tells it like it is so he gets to fly the plane today.

If you think Academia in any way shape or form is any kind of arbiter as to ability.... you just might be a dumbass.

NO.

barret is catholic, but not a "normal" one. just as pence and mother are "evangelical catholics" she is a "charismatic catholic".

what the hell does that mean? it means she's a sworn life-long member of "people of praise" a "parachurch" group that embraces things like speaking in tongues. this is NOT standard catholic practice or doctrine, the most famous charismatic church in america is probably the pentecostals AKA "holy rollers" and "snake handlers".

barret may be a brilliant woman and an honest legal scholar and practitioner, but make no mistake she herself said:

"I'm just going to identify one way in which I hope that you, as graduates of Notre Dame, will fulfill the promise of being a different kind of lawyer. And that is this: that you will always keep in mind that your legal career is but a means to an end, and as Father Jenkins told you this morning, that end is building the kingdom of God."

Associate Professor Amy Coney Barrett, Diploma Ceremony Address

this is much MORE dangerous than a hyper-partisan court justice, this woman believes with her whole heart she is on a mission from god. do you think for one second she will let "legal precedent" have more impact on her decisions than reshaping america to be more "godly"?

she's respected. she's smart, she's female, she's conventionally attractive, she's only 48 years old, and she is DANGEROUS to every single american who wishes NOT to live under a theocracy.

she's also a trumper on immigration issues, but she probably chalks that up to "jesus" as well.

If he passed the bar exam with only that education than the public has ensured his/her competency.   Career exams are supposed to be a stop gap in making sure academia actually turns out competent people.

Would you support the equivalent of a bar exam for politicians?  I'm not saying they need a Phd, they just need to have basic competency for the job.

That is a good question... In a sense, our entire system from municipal to federal elected positions should serve as a farm type of system where those that get to the federal level have already demonstrated their abilities while working up the governmental chain.  The next issue is that the parties themselves should vet their candidates and should control who can primary in their party.  Trump never should have been allowed to campaign on the Republican ticket and Bernie (a staunch independent until 2016 had contributed nothing to the party) should never have been allowed to run as a democrat.   Party politics should not be about popularity but who is best for the party and the people.

So the answer is that the local, county and state committee members should have already vetted candidates and no one should be able to declare their candidacy and run without their consent.

The fact a party can't disqualify someone from running for their party never made sense to me.  The party should be responsible for ensuring their candidates are proficient for the job.  You can run as an independent if you don't like them having any say.

It has nothing to do with that.  I watched the State Board of Land Surveyors change their tests back in the 80's and moved away from tests that measured actual work experience to being more academic oriented and the quality of Land Surveyors in the state went in the toilet.

Academia exists to perpetuate itself.. not to actually educate or determine suitability for anything outside of academia.

We used to tar & feather the likes of the scoundrels we have now, that was power of the common people. They lost that, they became lazy and complacent.

The tRump presidentcy is proof that every American has failed in their duty and succumbed to selfishness or sloth. This shiat should have never happened, much less gone past year 1 and the impeachment.

This country is finished.

Prank Call of Cthulhu: Pretty amazing, god manifesting a stove like that!

Well, actually what happened was that some dingbat started a grease fire on her stove that burned up the kitchen wall, filled the house with greasy smoke, and destroyed her stove. But, as luck would have it, somebody else in town was getting rid of some old used stove and...(get ready, this is the miraculous part)...gave it to her. Absolutely incredible. Way to go, god. I mean, he could have put out that grease fire, or protected that stove with magic, or stopped the fire from even starting in the first place, but redirecting some crap used appliance from the landfill to her house was the next best miracle. The part where they actually had to drag it through some cruddy ally to get it to her house, instead of it levitating there, or a rental truck being hired on the Holy Credit Card was also a particularly miraculous detail. I know I'm a believer now.

If you've ever hung out in Charismatic religious circles, this is what passes for proof of God.

In a lot of places like this, they'll encourage "seekers" to pray "The Skeptic's Prayer." Google that phrase - there are lots of examples. It usually goes something like this:

"God, I don't think I believe in you, but if you're there I'd like to know, so if you're there please reveal yourself because I want to know what's true."

Sounds nice. A little naive, maybe. But inevitably the person encouraging you to pray that will add fine print: You can't ask for a specific sign, because God is not your servant and you can't demand things from him. You can't put a time limit. If you don't see anything, ask again because God likes to make you grovel.

Long story short, you're supposed to wait until you find $5 when you need it, or a person you were thinking about calls you on the phone, or you find someone in your neighborhood getting rid of a stove when you need one, assume that's the answer to your prayer, and therefore declare that God is real, the Bible is inerrant, and serve him for the rest of your life by hating gay people and voting Republican.

Under no circumstances are you allowed to conclude the experiment has failed.

Come to think of it, I would seriously question the legal competence of someone who thought that this method of establishing causality was sound.

Wrong.  The Dems went nuclear because McConnell put obstructing Obama above the functioning of the U.S. government.   Positions were going vacant because the Repubs wouldn't confirm anyone besides who they wanted.  In fact, they weren't even willing to approve people they approved of it gave Obama a chance to accomplish something.

Repubs weren't willing to vet candidates honestly and approve them based on qualifications.  THAT's how we got here.  Remember that when Schumer goes nuclear in January,

The only reason the Democrats removed it was because the Republicans filibustered everything.  They weren't letting Obama appoint any judges since McConnell decided his primary purpose was to stop anything Obama did.  The Democrats should remove the filibuster, all it does is prevent anything from happening since the Republicans act like a petulant child

13 justices, not 18

we have 13 judicial circuits and each of the Justices is supposed to also be the Chief admin judge of a circuit...the number 9 for justices was set when we had nine circuits.  Therefore 13 is merely correctly updating the court.   The fact that it will give dems a 7-6 majority?  well just icing on the cake

The problem is that college is boring and discriminatory to those with ADHD and those that are auto-didactic.  college should not require people to dumb themselves down in order to graduate.

Back in the day, I could cruise through all the curriculum for a course in about 3-4 weeks being self paced.. I could pass all the exams along with mid-terms and finals.  The rest of the semester was just boring fill a seat and listen to the professor drone on.  I seriously hated school and the thought of having to submit myself to learning at the pace of the slowest student in class to be counterproductive to producing quality graduates.

I aced my Professional Land Surveyors exam back in the early 80's with no college degree or training.  I bought the text books myself while working as an apprentice land surveyor and taught myself.  Same with all my computer programming courses.  I took Fortran 77 at the local community college and after the first assignment, the teacher wrote 'see me after class' on the graded paper.  He told me that he had nothing left to teach me and that attending class was optional for the rest of the semester and he would give me an A.   I error trapped the code, validated the input and computed the problem two different ways and compared them in the code.  Same thing happened with Assembler and C.

If you know the material they should give you your A and let you move on to bigger and better things instead of stifling learning and turning people against the regiment ...

Been doing continuing ed online, and I gotta say, there are methods of getting a degree now that are far more ADHD-friendly than the traditional models.

In fact, the traditional model for higher ed really should be shelved for most programs as it's...just not the most useful method anymore.

Being a condescending douche is pretty crass, especially since nothing you said has to do with the stupidity and corruption of this administration that I was addressing. Do you think they learned how to fly entirely in a school?  Hell no.   If the pilot only had an academic knowledge of flight would you let them fly your plane?  Hell no.  They attended a commercial flight school.. not a college.

Bullshiat. I went to school at CWU and one of my roommates was in their flight school, and I  worked in the library with another flight student. I'm sure CWU wasn't the only university to have a flight school either. You do need an education to be a successful commercial pilot, because the interaction you have there with people from all over, prepares you for a traveling career. You seem to spew Dennis Prager talking points about education.

Why the right doesn't like education comes down to one reason: they don't like competition in indoctrination. They're peachy keen when it's pastors, priests, generals and drill sergeants doing the indoctrination. And of the three groups (clergy, military or educators) which is least likely to use illogical tradition and fear based arguments, and more likely to use the scientific method, reasoning and fact in their "indoctrination". That is clear.  The more Prager and others like him are successful, there will be more ignorant people more likely to buy into the Trump cult.

The weirdness in this woman's "Catholic" cult is the "head" and "handmaid" members of the community.

Comey-Barrett has almost zero courtroom experience, she was a law prof, and she been a judge on the far less consequential 7th circuit for under 3 years.   Put simply she ain't got the chops for the big leagues no matter WHAT her religious beliefs are.

Don't make the Kavanaugh mistake. raius: gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote? Shouldn't something like this be a 2/3rds vote?

Lol. You think Dems don't try to use the filibuster to stop things.

At any rate, glad you agree with the changes that render the Dems impotent in this situation.

If Biden wins, hopefully the DOJ will investigate and prosecute all the traitorous Republicans. It's a good possibility that the GOP won't survive as all their tops leaders are involved. Hard to pack the courts when you're top officials are hanging in the streets doing Mussolini impressions.

Of course, that vacuum would give QAnon the space they need to become a political party so the crazy ain't over.

We started in 1996, but there was some sort of mental shift after the market implosion in 2001 that resulted in professors and researchers changing their views in 2003.  By 2008 we knew that the hybrids were superior... which is why academia is getting around to doing it in 2020.

If you know the material they should give you your A and let you move on to bigger and better things instead of stifling learning and turning people against the regimented and out of date methods that are used in K-12 and College.

Wow. You don't usually get to see someone admit in public that they don't believe in the concept of expertise.

For everyone that claims to be an expert.. there are many others that are even better in the subject/field... always.

And how do you measure whether someone is an expert anymore given that college degrees are pretty much passed out like pez candy to undeserving and unqualified folks?

Needs a side by side with his upside down bible

Fact checkers apparently agree the Bible was not upside down. Just shows you once again how everything the Libs say is a lie.

What's the point of a smear campaign? She isn't running for President. The people have no say on who is appointed to the SCOTUS.
