"We don't try to control people," said Mr. Lent, who is also a professor of electrical engineering and physics at Notre Dame.

According to Craig S. Lent, the group's leader, People of Praise is neither "nefarious" nor "controversial"; however, per group policy, he would not confirm or deny Barrett's membership status.

If it's not controversial, why keep secrets?

Lent needs to give it up!

2020-09-22 7:40:06 AM
"Craig Lent, the group's overall coordinator, told The South Bend Tribune in 2018 that the organization is officially ecumenical, but its membership is predominantly Catholic.
He has also insisted in several interviews that the group is not a cult, but is about building community and friendships, with members that have a range of political views."

I saw this in another article that talked to the same guy. I've always said that the best way to convince people you aren't a cult, is to deny that you are a cult. If you ever have to say the words  "I am not in a cult" out loud, to another person, chances are 100% that you are in a cult. Unless you're emo or listen to ICP I guess.

2020-09-22 7:40:07 AM
This article is rife with oddly specific denial that makes me sick.

"We don't try to control people,"

"If and when members hold political offices, or judicial offices, or administrative offices, we would certainly not tell them how to discharge their responsibilities."

"And there's never any guarantee that the leader is always right. You have to discern and act in the Lord."
(which the leader always says he does, so you need to do as he says without question)

The entire GOP is a cult.

Cult (n):
1) a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object.
2) a relatively small group of people having religious beliefs or practices regarded by others as strange or sinister.
3) a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.

Irrelevant, and if used against her in the hearings, a violation of the Constitution of the United States of America:

https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution-transcript
Article. VI.
All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

If you're saying she can't be confirmed because of her religious beliefs (or lack thereof, if that applied), that's a flat-out violation of Article VI.

Article.

Doesn't matter if she's in a "cult" or not.   It's a blanket prohibition with no exceptions.

2020-09-22 8:27:19 AM

havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote? Shouldn't something like this be a 2/3rds vote?

Well, the Democrats decided to get rid of the 60 vote requirement for all nominees except Supreme Court Justices because they wanted to stop Republicans from using the filibuster.

Then, when the Dems tried to use the filibuster against Gorsuch, the Republicans decided to return the favor by removing the Supreme Court exception.

Meanwhile, Democrats (like Obama) are fond of saying that the filibuster is racist (despite engaging in the practice), but now find themselves unable to do anything because they put the wheels into motion to limit the ability to use the filibuster to stop nominees.

So in short, the Dems decided to play hardball because Republicans wouldn't just go along with what the Dems wanted, and in the process, they shot themselves in the foot.

Remember this story when you hear Schumer talk about how they should pack the court. It wasn't that long ago that Republicans controlled all three branches, and it will happen again. At that point, if court packing has occurred, expect to see as many justices as there are states in the union

gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote?

The only reason the Democrats removed it was because the Republicans filibustered everything.  They weren't letting Obama appoint any judges since McConnell decided his primary purpose was to stop anything Obama did.  The Democrats should remove the filibuster, all it does is prevent anything from happening since the Republicans act like a petulant child

Let me play the contrarian here.   SHe can BELIEVE whatever the fark she wants, I don't farking care.  I Care about her judicial qualifications and she has...well, none really.   RBG was a judge of the second highet court in the land, the DC Circuit Court of Appeals (aka the Supreme Court's Waiting room) for 13 years before Clinton nominated her to the SCOTUS.  Prior t that she had been a litigator responsible for winning a landmark case.

Comey-Barrett has almost zero courtroom experience, she was a law prof, and she been a judge on the far less consequential 7th circuit for under 3 years.   Put simply she ain't got the chops for the big leagues no matter WHAT her religious beliefs are.

Don't make the Kavanaugh mistake. Blassey-Ford's allegations were important, but they were the wrong focus.   Kavanaugh committed perjury in his first confirmation hearing to be a federal judge in 2005, and the emails released before his scotus confirmation provided written proof of that.   THAT should have been the focus of the questions by Democratic Senators, the FELONY he committed that made him eligible to be disbarred and not able to even serve as a judge

It is a bit strange, but what Catholics and Jews have in common is that the both come from very legalistic faiths with Canon Law and Talmudic law respectively making up a significant part of their belief systems.   I think it inspires a certain "reverence" for secular law as well that lead people to be passionate about the law and judging that makes them tend to stand out ... Wine Sipping Elitist: I respect fundamentalists

Uh, bub, things are "black and white" to those folks because their religious fundamentalism is a cult and they are indoctrinated.

And you respect those people more than people that saw the cult for what it was, but still wanted to claim faith but NOT want to have to be in a cult to do it?

Oh, and lets not even get into the part about "wishy-washy" oh you mean, taking in a bunch of new info and finding the best course from all of it instead of just sticking to whatever you think blindly and without reason.

That's what you respect?

You're an odd one.

And if the senators can't bring it up, what's the point of talking about it?   It's a nullity.   It's like discussing why water is wet.

The unifying theme however, is that they are always assholes no matter where they land.
They use policy and power to bully, not unite.

All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.

raius: gar1013: raius: gar1013: raius: gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote?

Lol. You think Dems don't try to use the filibuster to stop things.

13 justices, not 18

we have 13 judicial circuits and each of the Justices is supposed to also be the Chief admin judge of a circuit...the number 9 for justices was set when we had nine circuits.  Therefore 13 is merely correctly updating the court.   The fact that it will give dems a 7-6 majority?  well just icing on the cake

Cool.

If Dems pack the court, once we regain control of Congress and the Presidency, we'll expand it to 50...maybe even throw in a few for our various territories as well.

TheCruxOfTheBiscuitIsTheApostrophe: raius: Magorn: Let me play the contrarian here.

This post deserves more attention.  You're right the cult thing shouldn't nearly be as disqualifying as the lack of experience.  They should in no way to be nominated to a life long position with so little accomplishments to their name.

Oh, smartening up a little I see. Well at least you recognize a bad strategy now.

What are you on about?  The cult thing is still bad, the lack of experience is also bad.  Why are you defending someone whose clearly a bit fit for the job?

"Head: and "handmaid" are not part of the Roman Catholic Church. That is not Roman Catholic.

I have heard that in the USA there are other kinds of bespoke "Catholic Church" like the, IIRC, the Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch.

What is really weird, though, is that the article makes it sound like wives being subservient to husbands is, in some way, uncommon in the USA. Even in atheist households, that is the dominant norm. It is also normal for a priest, pastor, reverend, etcetcetc, to give marriage counseling and whatnot.

The weirdness in this woman's "Catholic" cult is the "head" and "handmaid" members of the community.

If you look up "warning signs of a cult" on the internet, you'll find lists from psychologists and cult-watch organizations with lots of useful bullet points like "Has a large degree of control over members lives," "extreme demands on members time," "discourages outside relationships," and "believes that they have special access to spiritual truth or power that others do not."

These are all important things to look for.

However, if you look up "warning signs of a cult" and follow links to religious cult-watch organizations, you'll see extra bullet points that secular organizations do not have, like "heterodox religious beliefs" or "believes they have a new revelation from God beyond what's in the Bible."

The reason for this is that a lot of Christian churches are functionally cults, but lists like this give them cover as long as the leader isn't claiming he's the second coming of Jesus and trying to sleep with all the members. And if anyone calls them out as such, they do just like in this thread and cry "persecution" up to the heavens.

I was in a Christian cult in college. (On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is an intramural football league and 10 is Jonestown, they were about a 6 or 7.) They didn't forbid you to have outside friends, but they did demand that leaders participated in 4-5 activities a week, (easily 20-25 hours), which sort of caused outside relationships to fade away. They maintained a 1 on 1 accountability structure where you had partners that you'd meet to monitor each other for wrongthink once a week. Most of the people lived in big houses with exclusively other members. About half of the members married other members.

I knew several people for whom this cult wasn't crazy enough, who later moved on to groups that were 8s or 9s, what with living out in the woods to get "spiritual training without distraction" or into compounds where they "trained to engage is spiritual warfare."

But obviously, none of these groups would admit that they were cults - they'd just talk about how they're trying to let people fully devote themselves to Jesus like 1st century Christians and want to see "revival" and how they're using the same Bible as everyone else, they're just trying to take it more seriously.

So, yeah. When it comes to cults, (as in all-encompassing authoritarian religious groups,) it's about about behavior. You can have a relatively mainstream religious beliefs and still be in a cult. And I have no doubt Barret is in one. This is very bad.

And to the "religious test" talking point: You can absolutely still object to the content of a nominee's religion. If the nominee is a religious geocentrist, that can absolutely still be disqualifying, as can believing that men and women are not fundamentally equal, or that American government should be explicitly Christian.

It's a weird tangent when the original comment was just talking about corruption of the spirit of the constitution. The Founders were simply men from their time period with all the baggage that entails but the constitution is supposed to be a living document that adjusts with the times and the nominee in question is quite the throwback to a regressive era.

Dems suck at strategy. Don't say you weren't warned.

Oh so vewy vewy conswerned. republicans have already shown they will do anything. Democrats would profoundly stupid not to do exactly the same and you know it. 2020-09-22 9:52:33 AM

gar1013: havocmike: Why is such an important decision a simple majority vote?

Wrong.  The Dems went nuclear because McConnell put obstructing Obama above the functioning of the U.S. government.   Positions were going vacant because the Repubs wouldn't confirm anyone besides who they wanted.  In fact, they weren't even willing to approve people they approved of it gave Obama a chance to accomplish something.

Repubs weren't willing to vet candidates honestly and approve them based on qualifications.  THAT's how we got here.  Remember that when Schumer goes nuclear in January,

This person is not just a Catholic...lets get that straight.  If she was just Catholic, the teachings of the Catholic Church are public, well known, and scrutinized (obviously not everyone adheres to those beliefs, and everyone is free to say she is a whack job for being Catholic because of transubstantiation or whatever).  The thing is, though, the teachings and rules of "People of Praise" are not public, and their community has a habit of making their members swear some weird fealty to their "head."

So do we want a Supreme Court Justice who will do what her husband or leader tells her?  Forget about Rome telling her what to do.  Thats not the issue here.  The issue is who is actually guiding her.  She will probably laugh this off and say "of course I make my own decisions and think my own thoughts."  But this is a life time appointment.  I cant see this being a good idea.

And if the senators can't bring it up, what's the point of talking about it?   It's a nullity.   It's like discussing why water is wet.

Wine Sipping Elitist: How is this different from the standard wedding vows? How is this different from standard Christianity?

She is a fundamentalist Christian. This is what they all believe. Big deal.

Honestly, I disagree with them, but I respect fundamentalists more than wishy washy new age types that believe the next thing that sounds good. What the fundies believe is written down, in black and white.

I certainly don't want them having power over me, that's for sure, but I don't see anything extra whack-a-doodle about her oath. It's standard fundy Christian social club stuff. You know, the usual whack-a-doodle stuff.

She is part of religious group that was founded in 1971, in Indiana.

It is a special kind of irony that "Christians" don't follow the teachings of Jesus that "is written down, in black and white".

Great, so when enough of these "fundies" are all in positions of power and decide that the rest of us have to abide by their deeply held religious beliefs I suppose you will be the first to hand over your 14 year old daughter to be married off to an adult male of their choosing? Because for some reason all of these Christian groups have no problem with little girls marrying adult men. But the real threat is these nut jobs forcing their medieval bullshiat into public schools, assuming Davos hasn't already eliminated all of them by then.

Denial is the first sign of being in a cult.

People of Praise is a bastardized mix of Catholicism and Protestant Pentecostalism that was founded by 30 people in Indiana in 1971. So are they Christians? Mostly. Do they "speak in tongues" believe in faith healing and play with rattle snakes in church? Pretty much. Are their members required to give up a minimum amount of their income to the "church" to maintain membership? Yep. Do they keep the names of the people in their "church" a secret? Yep. Do they adhere to a patriarchal control structure? Yep.

Sounds farked up to me.

Nope, their cult has pretty much all christian faiths, they don't turn away tithes from anyone that says Jesus on Sundays. From their website.

Jesus desires unity for all people. We live out this unity the best we can, in spite of the divisions within Christianity. We are Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Episcopalians, Methodists, Pentecostals, Presbyterians and other denominational and nondenominational Christians. Despite our differences, we are bound together by our Christian baptism. Despite our differences, we worship together. While remaining faithful members of our own churches, we have found a way to live our daily lives together.

Wow. You don't usually get to see someone admit in public that they don't believe in the concept of expertise.

For everyone that claims to be an expert.. there are many others that are even better in the subject/field... always.

And how do you measure whether someone is an expert anymore given that college degrees are pretty much passed out like pez candy to undeserving and unqualified folks?

Degree inflation is real.. an associates degree is like a high school degree of 40 years ago, an bachelors degree is equivalent to an associates degree and so on and so on.  The real world knows that academia is failing and is continually upping their degree requirements because graduates are just really that bad.

The People of Praise website is amazing. It has this incredible story on its blog:

Pretty amazing, god manifesting a stove like that!

Well, actually what happened was that some dingbat started a grease fire on her stove that burned up the kitchen wall, filled the house with greasy smoke, and destroyed her stove. But, as luck would have it, somebody else in town was getting rid of some old used stove and...(get ready, this is the miraculous part)...gave it to her. Absolutely incredible. Way to go, god. I mean, he could have put out that grease fire, or protected that stove with magic, or stopped the fire from even starting in the first place, but redirecting some crap used appliance from the landfill to her house was the next best miracle. The part where they actually had to drag it through some cruddy ally to get it to her house, instead of it levitating there, or a rental truck being hired on the Holy Credit Card was also a particularly miraculous detail. I know I'm a believer now.

its real.  Your degree is worth maybe half of what it used to be and is no longer an indication of ability or talent.

This is why I think politicians should require more then just getting elected to hold office.  You should have to pass at least a basic civics course, something to show you understand how government is supposed to function.  All these common sense outsiders are generally disasters.

way south: *Sigh*, So now Catholics are a cult...

I think the democrats forgot that they needed people to vote for them at some point.

NO.

barret is catholic, but not a "normal" one. just as pence and mother are "evangelical catholics" she is a "charismatic catholic".

what the hell does that mean? it means she's a sworn life-long member of "people of praise" a "parachurch" group that embraces things like speaking in tongues. this is NOT standard catholic practice or doctrine, the most famous charismatic church in america is probably the pentecostals AKA "holy rollers" and "snake handlers".

barret may be a brilliant woman and an honest legal scholar and practitioner, but make no mistake she herself said:

"I'm just going to identify one way in which I hope that you, as graduates of Notre Dame, will fulfill the promise of being a different kind of lawyer. And that is this: that you will always keep in mind that your legal career is but a means to an end, and as Father Jenkins told you this morning, that end is building the kingdom of God."

Associate Professor Amy Coney Barrett, Diploma Ceremony Address

this is much MORE dangerous than a hyper-partisan court justice, this woman believes with her whole heart she is on a mission from god. do you think for one second she will let "legal precedent" have more impact on her decisions than reshaping america to be more "godly"?

she's respected. she's smart, she's female, she's conventionally attractive, she's only 48 years old, and she is DANGEROUS to every single american who wishes NOT to live under a theocracy.

she's also a trumper on immigration issues, but she probably chalks that up to "jesus" as well.

If you've ever hung out in Charismatic religious circles, this is what passes for proof of God.

In a lot of places like this, they'll encourage "seekers" to pray "The Skeptic's Prayer." Google that phrase - there are lots of examples. It usually goes something like this:

"God, I don't think I believe in you, but if you're there I'd like to know, so if you're there please reveal yourself because I want to know what's true."

Sounds nice. A little naive, maybe. But inevitably the person encouraging you to pray that will add fine print: You can't ask for a specific sign, because God is not your servant and you can't demand things from him. You can't put a time limit. If you don't see anything, ask again because God likes to make you grovel.

Long story short, you're supposed to wait until you find $5 when you need it, or a person you were thinking about calls you on the phone, or you find someone in your neighborhood getting rid of a stove when you need one, assume that's the answer to your prayer, and therefore declare that God is real, the Bible is inerrant, and serve him for the rest of your life by hating gay people and voting Republican.

Under no circumstances are you allowed to conclude the experiment has failed.

Come to think of it, I would seriously question the legal competence of someone who thought that this method of establishing causality was sound.

sniderman: Exluddite: It has become glaringly obvious that the framers of the constitution didn't count on people this corrupt, this stupid, or both actually getting elected.

The framers of the Constitution didn't expect nearly half of the U.S. population to be pants-on-head stupid either. And yet here we are.

Well yes they did, and that's why we used to have a Repubic, where only successful land owners who happened to be men unafflicted by the emotional sentiment of the female sex were allowed to vote.

The framers of the Constitution were very much aware that allowing governing by popular vote alone was the tyranny of the stupid.

There had to be balance, but the loss of a true representative Republic where the best and brightest are chosen as representatives was lost long ago.

We used to tar & feather the likes of the scoundrels we have now, that was power of the common people. They lost that, they became lazy and complacent.

The tRump presidentcy is proof that every American has failed in their duty and succumbed to selfishness or sloth. This shiat should have never happened, much less gone past year 1 and the impeachment.

This country is finished.
