Prank Call of Cthulhu: Pretty amazing, god manifesting a stove like that!

Well, actually what happened was that some dingbat started a grease fire on her stove that burned up the kitchen wall, filled the house with greasy smoke, and destroyed her stove. But, as luck would have it, somebody else in town was getting rid of some old used stove and...(get ready, this is the miraculous part)...gave it to her. Absolutely incredible. Way to go, god. I mean, he could have put out that grease fire, or protected that stove with magic, or stopped the fire from even starting in the first place, but redirecting some crap used appliance from the landfill to her house was the next best miracle. The part where they actually had to drag it through some cruddy ally to get it to her house, instead of it levitating there, or a rental truck being hired on the Holy Credit Card was also a particularly miraculous detail. I know I'm a believer now.

If you've ever hung out in Charismatic religious circles, this is what passes for proof of God.

In a lot of places like this, they'll encourage "seekers" to pray "The Skeptic's Prayer." Google that phrase - there are lots of examples. It usually goes something like this:

"God, I don't think I believe in you, but if you're there I'd like to know, so if you're there please reveal yourself because I want to know what's true."

Sounds nice. A little naive, maybe. But inevitably the person encouraging you to pray that will add fine print: You can't ask for a specific sign, because God is not your servant and you can't demand things from him. You can't put a time limit. If you don't see anything, ask again because God likes to make you grovel.

Long story short, you're supposed to wait until you find $5 when you need it, or a person you were thinking about calls you on the phone, or you find someone in your neighborhood getting rid of a stove when you need one, assume that's the answer to your prayer, and therefore declare that God is real, the Bible is inerrant, and serve him for the rest of your life by hating gay people and voting Republican.

Under no circumstances are you allowed to conclude the experiment has failed.

Come to think of it, I would seriously question the legal competence of someone who thought that this method of establishing causality was sound.

sniderman: Exluddite: It has become glaringly obvious that the framers of the constitution didn't count on people this corrupt, this stupid, or both actually getting elected.

The framers of the Constitution didn't expect nearly half of the U.S. population to be pants-on-head stupid either. And yet here we are.

Well yes they did, and that's why we used to have a Repubic, where only successful land owners who happened to be men unafflicted by the emotional sentiment of the female sex were allowed to vote.

The framers of the Constitution were very much aware that allowing governing by popular vote alone was the tyranny of the stupid.

There had to be balance, but the loss of a true representative Republic where the best and brightest are chosen as representatives was lost long ago.

We used to tar & feather the likes of the scoundrels we have now, that was power of the common people. They lost that, they became lazy and complacent.

The tRump presidentcy is proof that every American has failed in their duty and succumbed to selfishness or sloth. This shiat should have never happened, much less gone past year 1 and the impeachment.

It has nothing to do with that.  I watched the State Board of Land Surveyors change their tests back in the 80's and moved away from tests that measured actual work experience to being more academic oriented and the quality of Land Surveyors in the state went in the toilet.

Academia exists to perpetuate itself.. not to actually educate or determine suitability for anything outside of academia.

If the things you believe and endorse are deep dark secrets that you must needs conceal, that's your business - but not if you wish to have power over me.
If someone is to have power over me, I have no problem whatsoever with their answering a few questions about the deeply held beliefs they would presumably be acting on.
The reason the righties ITT are pretending that this would violate the rules against religious tests is that they know that, if exposed, this stupid biatche's insane god bother dogshiat would repulse and alarm any moderates in the Senate - Republican or Democrat - so the strategy is to hush it up and try to get it done on the sly, real fast.
This has nothing to do with any religious "test" so stow that bullshiat and STFU.

You shouldn't be a politician if you can't understand the job.  There's some dipshiat in Kansas who might be elected as a 19 year old dishwasher.  I don't care if you're right or left but that's not enough qualification to represent other people.

They were actually all 'remain calm' in that story.  They were still in love with Trump tax cuts at the time

There  is an archive.today copy of that article at https://archive.vn/fbsWE but Fark will claim its unfetchable

They did quote an academic

Richard Painter, a law professor and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate in Minnesota, loved the article. He recently tweeted the link, adding his own comment on People of Praise: "A religious group in which members take an oath of loyalty to each other and are supervised by a male 'head' or female 'handmaiden.' That looks like a cult." As nonbigots do, Mr. Painter then added, "don't even try playing the 'anti-Catholic bigotry' card."

Yep, we yelled and screamed for you to do what is right. You did not. You chose to change the rules anyway.

Now we want you to abide by them.

dwrash: raius: dwrash: raius: This is why I think politicians should require more then just getting elected to hold office.  You should have to pass at least a basic civics course, something to show you understand how government is supposed to function.  All these common sense outsiders are generally disasters.

I am 100% against academia having any involvement in vetting or determining the suitability of a candidate.  That would be like the blind leading the blind.

You shouldn't be a politician if you can't understand the job.  There's some dipshiat in Kansas who might be elected as a 19 year old dishwasher.  I don't care if you're right or left but that's not enough qualification to represent other people.

Politician is the only job where being a complete dumbass is seen as a benefit to some people.  Can you imagine if pilots were hired this way?  Sure Frank has all the certification and book learning, but Jack is a straight shooter who tells it like it is so he gets to fly the plane today.

If you think Academia in any way shape or form is any kind of arbiter as to ability.... you just might be a dumbass.

I'd like to see you hire a guy who took two law classes in high school to defend you in your sheep molestation case or the guy who read a pop up book on anatomy to get your head out of Trump's ass.

kindms: dittybopper: Irrelevant, and if used against her in the hearings, a violation of the Constitution of the United States of America:

https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/constitution-transcript
Article. VI.
All Debts contracted and Engagements entered into, before the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be as valid against the United States under this Constitution, as under the Confederation.
This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

If you're saying she can't be confirmed because of her religious beliefs (or lack thereof, if that applied), that's a flat-out violation of Article VI.

Doesn't matter if she's in a "cult" or not.   It's a blanket prohibition with no exceptions.

this just means having religion or not cannot be used to deny you the office. no where does it say your views shaped by your lunacy cannot be called in to question.

I'll bet that if her religious beliefs included banning guns, he'd have no issue with bringing up her religion.

raius: Farkonaut: Some really basic assholes in this thread think having a SCOTUS justice that will defer her decisions on matters that will effect all peoples (even you tools) to some sky fairies dictate or the man she is married to sounds like a good plan.

Sure why not.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Stunningly stupid.

Not just the man she married, also the cult leader hand maiden that's responsible for all the women in the cult.

Yes, I caught that,
However, they too answer to a Man, who answers to god.
I was simplifying the workflow for the sake of brevity.
