Nobody's attacking her for being Catholic; they're attacking her for being part of some weirdo misogynistic sub-cult that thinks husbands own their wives, and women are subordinate to men. Because this concept is anathema to our laws, it's kind of a reason to dump on her, no?

Comey-Barrett has almost zero courtroom experience, she was a law prof, and she been a judge on the far less consequential 7th circuit for under 3 years.   Put simply she ain't got the chops for the big leagues no matter WHAT her religious beliefs are.

Don't make the Kavanaugh mistake. Blassey-Ford's allegations were important, but they were the wrong focus.   Kavanaugh committed perjury in his first confirmation hearing to be a federal judge in 2005, and the emails released before his scotus confirmation provided written proof of that.   THAT should have been the focus of the questions by Democratic Senators, the FELONY he committed that made him eligible to be disbarred and not able to even serve as a judge


This post deserves more attention.  You're right the cult thing shouldn't nearly be as disqualifying as the lack of experience.  They should in no way to be nominated to a life long position with so little accomplishments to their name.

we have 13 judicial circuits and each of the Justices is supposed to also be the Chief admin judge of a circuit...the number 9 for justices was set when we had nine circuits.  Therefore 13 is merely correctly updating the court.   The fact that it will give dems a 7-6 majority?  well just icing on the cake

If Dems pack the court, once we regain control of Congress and the Presidency, we'll expand it to 50...maybe even throw in a few for our various territories as well.

I have heard that in the USA there are other kinds of bespoke "Catholic Church" like the, IIRC, the Catholic Apostolic Church of Antioch.

What is really weird, though, is that the article makes it sound like wives being subservient to husbands is, in some way, uncommon in the USA. Even in atheist households, that is the dominant norm. It is also normal for a priest, pastor, reverend, etcetcetc, to give marriage counseling and whatnot.

The weirdness in this woman's "Catholic" cult is the "head" and "handmaid" members of the community.

I agree with what you're saying. i really don't have a weird fetish about anyone... (although my google would probably suggest otherwise... )  and Im not sure where you're even getting that ?

I just have a real issue with morons who try to frame today's society standards around what the founding fathers would think...  I think anyone being truly honest would have to admit that they would simply not be able to even process what passes for norms today.

If you look up "warning signs of a cult" on the internet, you'll find lists from psychologists and cult-watch organizations with lots of useful bullet points like "Has a large degree of control over members lives," "extreme demands on members time," "discourages outside relationships," and "believes that they have special access to spiritual truth or power that others do not."

These are all important things to look for.

However, if you look up "warning signs of a cult" and follow links to religious cult-watch organizations, you'll see extra bullet points that secular organizations do not have, like "heterodox religious beliefs" or "believes they have a new revelation from God beyond what's in the Bible."

The reason for this is that a lot of Christian churches are functionally cults, but lists like this give them cover as long as the leader isn't claiming he's the second coming of Jesus and trying to sleep with all the members. And if anyone calls them out as such, they do just like in this thread and cry "persecution" up to the heavens.

I was in a Christian cult in college. (On a scale of 1-10 where 1 is an intramural football league and 10 is Jonestown, they were about a 6 or 7.) They didn't forbid you to have outside friends, but they did demand that leaders participated in 4-5 activities a week, (easily 20-25 hours), which sort of caused outside relationships to fade away. They maintained a 1 on 1 accountability structure where you had partners that you'd meet to monitor each other for wrongthink once a week. Most of the people lived in big houses with exclusively other members. About half of the members married other members.

I knew several people for whom this cult wasn't crazy enough, who later moved on to groups that were 8s or 9s, what with living out in the woods to get "spiritual training without distraction" or into compounds where they "trained to engage is spiritual warfare."

But obviously, none of these groups would admit that they were cults - they'd just talk about how they're trying to let people fully devote themselves to Jesus like 1st century Christians and want to see "revival" and how they're using the same Bible as everyone else, they're just trying to take it more seriously.

So, yeah. When it comes to cults, (as in all-encompassing authoritarian religious groups,) it's about about behavior. You can have a relatively mainstream religious beliefs and still be in a cult. And I have no doubt Barret is in one. This is very bad.

Martian_Astronomer: So, yeah. When it comes to cults, (as in all-encompassing authoritarian religious groups,) it's about about behavior. You can have a relatively mainstream religious beliefs and still be in a cult. And I have no doubt Barret is in one. This is very bad.


And to the "religious test" talking point: You can absolutely still object to the content of a nominee's religion. If the nominee is a religious geocentrist, that can absolutely still be disqualifying, as can believing that men and women are not fundamentally equal, or that American government should be explicitly Christian.

The Salem Hypothesis is the observation of an apparent correlation between the engineering trade and creationist beliefs (possibly due to crank magnetism, this can also include climate-change denial and other crackpot beliefs).
The hypothesis suggests that people who claim science expertise, whilst advocating creationism, tend to be formally trained as engineers[1] (with the possible exception of chemical engineers).
