So we can add warrantless wiretapping to the list of crimes that have taken place under the trump administration.

I remember when that sort of thing was a big deal - all the way back in the 20th century.
Now though, it's normal.

So first thing you do after getting arrested is get a new phone and just send out crazy stuff on the old phone.

"Hey all we got the 50,000 people for the riot in Pigsknuckle, AR next week, make sure you bring extra cans of soup when we take it over."

The you see Barr and Trump send their goons there for a week.

Don't bring your phone to protests.  Bring a cheap camera instead.

Hey, Righty-turds! Remember when you were whining about all the evil "looters and rioters"?
Oh, yeah - it was you all along!
How about that!
"Antifa" is funded by the Kock Brothers and the RNC and their ilk!
To be honest, we kinda knew it, the whole time..

It took the author of that piece a long time to get to the phone part and then it was based upon something a "former operative" told him.  Nothing in there actually either suggests they did this or that they have the technological resources to do this.

Zero support for the allegation but some with run with it.

The Nation has become a joke.

That article takes for-farking-ever to get to the story. The first half is the reporter basically turning his story of how many sources he interviewed, before getting a real story, into a story in itself.

The part that matters begins here...

QuoteA current DHS official described a colleague with expertise in electronic surveillance who was being deployed to Portland. But for what purpose? "Extracting information from protester's phones," the DHS official said. While in Portland, an interagency task force involving DHS and the Justice Department used a sophisticated cell phone cloning attack-the details of which remain classified-to intercept protesters' phone communications, according to two former intelligence officers familiar with the matter.

Earlier in the article, the reporter mentions,

Quote: "They asked for volunteers and nobody wanted to go," the former intelligence officer said. "The fact that they asked for volunteers shows that it was outside the scope of their duties.... you only do that if you don't have the ability to order someone to go, probably because it's illegal."

Sigh. That's not helpful investigative journalism. That's a good story in itself, for a daily paper to run, about the DHS, Portland, and morale. But like, this article was written as if nobody remembers the Bush era and surveillance of protests then, and as if nobody recalls warrantless surveillance.

This appears consistent with a tip received this summer. Several members of the US Marshals Service (USMS)-part of the Justice Department-sent to Portland claimed to be affiliated with a private firm called "Strategic Oil," according to travel records obtained by The Nation. While they did not identify themselves as law enforcement, the travel records contain information indicating that they were marshals, including that they were given a special discount for federal government employees

When you have to hide your identity as a federal agent, you probably shouldn't ask for the fed discount....

And the Trump humpers will never do the deep dive to see the totalitarian, fascist bullshiat going on right under their noses.

This is reaching absurdist levels of blatant corruption.  The inmates are running the asylum and and 40% of the electorate is fine with it.

I have bad news for you about the memory of Americans.

This summer, two blocks in downtown Portland looked like a war zone.

FTFY

Does airplane mode turn of the internal radios. Turn phone off.  Cops will still confiscate the phone if you get arrested.  Damn. Need a farking goddam burner phone to simply exercise my right to free speech and assembly.

There is no company named "Strategic Oil" on the Google.  Must be one of those Dark Web companies, chartered in Belarus, hiring US federal workers at a discount.
