I feel like I'm the only one (who usually loves Henson productions) who never liked Dark Crystal. Ever since I was a kid I found the Gelflings just creeeeeeeepy af, so I could never get into them as the protagonists of the story.

I wound up enjoying the series much more than the film.

But as a prequel it did seem sort of ... over.

It was an awkward show but I was liking it by the end.

Sadly, the endgame for the show would be the Geflings losing, and end up dying almost completely off.

Wow, that's farking bullshiat. That was the only TV series I enjoyed last year.

Not necessarily. The whole bit where Aughra is absorbed and then is able to be resurrected again makes me wonder if they are setting up a happier ending for the movie where some of the Gelflings are actually trapped in the Crystal and then freed.

There is a comic about what happens with the events after the movie. I think a bunch of Geflings are hiding out. I never read the comics, so I can't say exactly what that is about. I think the show could go in that direction, but we won't know unless Disney Plus picks up the show.

I tried to watch it and made it in about 2 episodes. I never really got into it, I guess. I'm not sure why, I really loved the movie.

Well that and it's probably pretty risky to have multiple people operating a puppet in close proximity during a pandemic.

My youngest is 11. It's very difficult to find things we can both enjoy that sit nicely in the gap between Teen Titans Go! and South Park.

This was a joy.

This show was fantastic, sad to see it go. Wont get to see Santa Clarita Diet, which probably only needed one more season to tie it up. So netflix is pretty good at cancelling shows that are actually good. Meanwhile, finishing up Ratched, and this has just been buckets full of men. Had they just made this American Horror Story: Asylum 2, fine, but good lord this shouldn't get a 2nd season let alone the planned 4. Pretty looking show and that's about it. But yeah, cancel Dark Crystal, a show that actually put a lot of work into creating it.

Hahahaha, love it. Meant "buckets full of meh". The finale just ended, and it really needs to end there. Looks like we get murder hunter Ratched if theres a 2nd.

I'm sad to see it go. The good news is, like an animated series, if Netflix later comes to their senses or someone else picks it up they can pick up where they left off. We don't have to worry about actors aging out for example.

My biggest worry about any extended hiatus is they assembled a great team of production design people who were really into the project. The quality of this team's work was outstanding, and it might be tough to get the band back together.

Given Henson Studios close relationship with Disney I have a slim hope this is just representing a shift to a different platform that we just haven't heard about yet. Kinda like Netflix ending all their Marvel shows.

Nah. I never found the gelflings to be creepy. The original movie was just boring despite some decent world building. I did find the new series fantastic and I'm sad to see it go.

For me it was watching some cute little creatures gets their souls sucked out, seeing their faces collapse into something zombie-like.  Stuff of nightmares.  Completely wrong tone for that movie.  Killed any chance of me enjoying it.

Not necessarily. Losing the war, sure, but not the fight for simple existence. I thought with the desert Gelflings and cave Gelflings they were setting up places they could retreat to, and survive. Ordinarily I'd agree with prequels that you have the "well, this is fine but I know how it ends" issue, but the story of the film was broad and generic enough that there could have been a lot of retconning and infilling done.
As with Star Wars and Rogue One, which turned out to be an amazing (subjectively, of course) prequel that I didn't know I wanted.

Shame about the show, I thought it was really good, and the team was clearly talented and worked hard to make something memorable.

That's very disappointing.  I subscribed to Netflix just for that series a while back.  Lesson learned.  I will now refrain from subscribing to Netflix for a single series unlesd they allow it at least a couple of seasons.

Maybe HBO can pick up Dark Crystal: AoR?

You mean there's a difference between a TV series produced by a company, and a movie that the company is just distributing? Who wouldda thought?

Editing a TV show to make it enjoyable is more work than should be expected from people.

I see Boobiesers didn't watch it

I tried

I had to stop after the xth episode where yet another form of oppressions or classism was being demonstrated with such cruelty that it was supposed to make us feel sorry for the lesser species

we wanted a feelgood kids show in a world that we felt was under appreciated and they gave us anti-oppression programming suitable for cults

no wonder it was cancelled

I think what killed me is "we will not bother to even watch your 100% accurate mind meld that provides perfect evidence of the crime I'm claiming" that kicks off everything

Thank God we live in the real world where, offered the chance to view irrefutable evidence that would irrevocably change your world view, everyone jumps at the chance.

It came across as the horrible rom-com trope of "I can explain" and no one even bothers for a second

When I was a kid my parents took me to the movie and I just stared at my lap the whole time and refused to look at the screen.

It also made the Harry Potter justice system very weird. Nothing but kangaroo courts in a world where you have actual truth serum and ways of viewing the past remotely and precisely.

For me, Gelflings are straight from the Uncanny Valley, and first few eps were hard to watch, but it really got going and I enjoyed the series.
