I was thinking about the urban terror of colored dots on mailboxes.

That's the one the husband scratches off on his wedding night to see if he's won a gas station or a 7/11?

I can see the Indian dot thing being useful, but to me it seems implemented backwards.  Single women that are looking should have worn the dot, and anyone else should not.  Much easier to wear it for only a handful of years than a lifetime.

That feature seems useful, but how do you turn off the mic if you don't know *which* app is using it?

2020-09-22 3:04:36 AM
Why can't the phone be set to lie to an app?  If it insists on using the mic, the OS tells the thing "sure you have the mic" but it just doesn't work.   Blackberry had that feature years ago.

Yeah.  I'm betting that the dots don't work if the phone is being "lawfully accessed"

So, "they" are probably still listening, watching *and* tracking you.

Betcha the NSA knows how to disable them.

This shouldn't be a news article. Anybody with a functional brain that owns an iPhone with iOS 14 should have figured it out within 1 minute

I bet they do.  Along with the FBI, the DEA, and various other Law Entrapment Agencies.

Get rid of your pocket snitch.

It's funny, owning pager, and then a cell phone, used to be a status symbol.   Now its almost required.  Almost.

You don't really need one.   I get by fine without one.

Bennie Crabtree: That feature seems useful, but how do you turn off the mic if you don't know *which* app is using it?

Not a lot of apps ask for mic permissions. If you go into privacy settings it will tell you which apps have access. AFAIK that's about the best you can do.

DON.MAC: Why can't the phone be set to lie to an app?  If it insists on using the mic, the OS tells the thing "sure you have the mic" but it just doesn't work.   Blackberry had that feature years ago.

That's a cool feature, but it's kind of unnecessary. Apps must request permission to use the camera, mic, calendar, contacts, photos, and maybe a few other things. If a developer tries to push an app through that doesn't request permissions, it's just not allowed on the App Store (ew... it automatically capitalized App Store). I'm sure some slip through. There were rumors of Instagram accessing the front camera to watch your face when you were scrolling your feed...

Mrs. Harlee and I have Kindles. First thing I did was put small pieces of duct tape over both cameras on each. Second thing I did was disable the Alexa feature on each.

You're a fool if you think your phone isn't watching you all the time, judging you, photographing you while you pee, secretly irradiating your genitals, sending information to your grocer about your eating habits, sizing you up for eventual assimilation into a slave labor camp in China, and under the complete control of your local police. A fool.

DON.MAC: Why can't the phone be set to lie to an app?

You don't need to lie.

Apps must have permission to use the camera and/or mic, and the App Store requires that the user must be allowed to say no to any permissions request.

The dots are there to let you know when apps are using the permission you gave them.

You can also pull up the iOS control center to see which app is using (or most recently used) the camera and/or mic.

Not sure about Instagram, but this was well-documented of the iOS Zoom app, as recently as last spring.  They fixed it around the time COVID started making inroads in the U.S.
