Jts853: Can you appoint judges during a shutdown?

Only if Congress is not in session

"Government is broken, vote for us!"

"Thanks! We broke Government! Vote for us again!"

2020-09-21 3:34:21 PM
Yeah, this is when the government needs to shut down, right before an election.

2020-09-21 3:47:00 PM
But the House already sent farmer's aid to the Senate, and Mitch hasn't done anything with it.

2020-09-21 3:56:41 PM
It's not Socialism when it's for farmers or corporations...

America is broken and I genuinely think that it cannot be fixed. My only hope is that when everything breaks down that I can make it to the bridge down the road fast enough to throw myself off of it before the new fascists decide I am guilty of thoughtcrimes against God-President Trump.

That's a recess appointment. They are able to make regular appointments if Congress is in session. I don't think recess appointments work for lifetime terms as they expire at the end of their next session which would mean a replacement could be tapped by the next president.

I'm from a farm town.  A guy I went to high school with (and my second cousin) is whining that he can't make any money on the farm he inherited because China won't buy any soybeans, but President Donald JOHN Trump will fix it or whatever.

This isn't about the farmers. This is the the turtle just being an asshole again for the fox sound bites. It will quietly pass without it when the shelled one has enough bites under his hat.

Remember, he won't allow any legislation pass that makes the dems look good. Grim reaper and all that rot.

Haven't those farmers gotten enough money?

Since you've resigned yourself to this inevitability, maybe there is something more productive you could do with your death.

What size vest do you wear?

Fark rural farmers.  They voted for trump, and now they want *checks notes* more welfare.  Let them eat shait.

and WHY exactly do these Socialist Welfare Queens of Farming need another round of aid ?

Oh yeah, the world's best negotiator..

I could have been mistaken

Oh you sweet summer child.

Which is why the GOP kept the bare minimum number of representatives in Congress present to technically keep it in session.

how much money do the damn farmers want?
we've been funneling billions of tariff dollars to them for years now.  they need to suck it up and grab some farking bootstraps like real americans and free up some of that money so we can get this wall built!

We need a class action lawsuit against trump and congress filed in the name of the 200,000 citizens that have been killed by their negligence.

What's to litigate it's plane language in the base constitution. It's not debating if the commerce clause allows them to regulate X, it reads that the recess appointment term ends at the end of the next session. (And for anyone that doesn't know the constitution also mandates 1 session a year), so they would have until the end of the next session of the senate. Assuming democrats control the chamber that could be on the first day of the next presidents term and then they could open a new session a day later to consider the next nominee.

And it's not fascism when we do it, either.

Funny enough, the only thing actually "socialist" about the nationalsocialist deutche arbeiter's party was... *drum roll please*... subsidies and price controls for farmers!

The thing is it's not even farmers, its COMMERCIAL farmers. You think the guy with 200 acres is getting this money? No, its the guy with 20K acres and 100 employees.

Government shutdowns do not shut down Congress, otherwise they'd be impossible to end. I'm also not sure a congressional shutdown is a thing when it comes to phrasing, that is more or less called congress being in recess.

If the SCOTUS is what decides the election, we're farked even if the new justice isn't seated. It's currently 5/3 in their favor. Adding another stooge doesn't change the math.

Yea but those are city Americans. Rs are willing to let Ds choose cities over farmers, and Pelosi will likely walk right into their talking point trap. They should instead say it doesn't go far enough and demand more, AND they want to help the cities too.

Since Iowa is likely going red this election, I think it's a good time to completely defund the whole state.

Starve the farmers!

Oh no, no no no. I am not TRYING to get on any lists and I would never do THAT. I'm a coward. I will genuflect as much as possible to whomever demands it, I just think that eventually no amount of genuflecting will be enough.

That means Senate leaders could choose to ignore the bill or amend it to add back the provisions they want in the package.

Mitch should do this.  I am tired of the take it or leave it aspect the house and senate has moved to.
