One of these ladies needs to speak with the pool manager, this is just unacceptable.

Do you want to make that bet Brentt?

Northern Arizonans are still fine to swim.

My uncle still likes to tell the story of when my cousin and I broke the ice on a frozen creek to go swimming.

I tried swimming in Las Vegas one Labor Day. It was 110 outside but the pool was only 78 due to it being in the shade, evaporative cooling and some rain (!) earlier in the day. Due to the difference in temperature it was like plunging into an ice bath.

When I was a wee Ker_Thwap...  I grew up on a NH lake, and it was cold, but but  I was just constantly moving just you just dove in and got it over with.  Once I got out of the water, all sixty pounds of me would be shivering in the 90 degree heat.  It was a cold water vs. calories burned and thermal mass thing.   It was cold outside in the winter, but we were constantly moving, and eventually would be shedding layers of clothing while mom yelled, it's freezing outside, put on a jacket!

Then I got old and fat, and and I kind of splashed around slowly for a bit before needing to rest aching muscles, and suddenly diving in that icy pond barely seems worth it.

This article is more about getting old and lethargic than about the temperatures..

In Vegas and getting a kick....

I have my solar heaters running during the day anymore.  With the kids remote schooling, I send them out to burn energy and they like the swimming.    I went this weekend and the water was in the mid 80s even with the heater running all day.  The night air is dropping the temps down quite a bit.

I lived a few years in Palm Springs. I'm familiar with 'dry heat'
Although the lack of humidity helps to cool you down nicely (to a point), 102 degrees is still hot, and getting out of a pool is not going to make you feel cold.

2020-09-21 1:50:30 PM
So, it's something to do with nighttime temps being lower, even though they're talking about swimming in daytime. Or maybe it's lower humidity even though June is much less humid, on average.

Something tells me these people don't know what they're talking about, pretty much ever.

AZ using the Colorado for swimming pool water is one of those things that people 100 years from now will consider a Sin.

Yes, I'm aware.   Only good pic I could find of it in a hurry.

And it's lower-case "d".  ditty.   Like e. e. cummings but without the mouse semen.

How do you feel about about California doing the same?

Years ago, I was flown down to Phoenix for a job interview.

It was late April, but it was already unbearably hot.

In April.

And it gets even worse for the next 4-6 months?

Nope.  Nope.  Nope.  Nope.

If it was a covered, enclosed pool then it wouldn't be so bad; you could call it a reservoir. I saw someone here in West Texass do it successfully; a medium-sized in-ground pool with a retractable enclosure: doubled as a greenhouse and very nicely at that. In an area where the well water was questionable at best, having a few thousand gallons of treated, softened water ready to go with protection from evaporation is a good deal when you live in the middle of hell.

While I've never done that*, I have swam in ice melt mountain rivers.
Guide told us it was around 41 degrees (F).

"But as hot as it is outside, we know nighttime temperatures have dropped. Arizonans know the air is so dry that water evaporates quickly. (It really is a dry heat.) That's why older houses have swamp coolers - they work! Evaporation is to blame, too, for why we get chilled when we get out of the pool, even if it's 102. When wet skin is exposed to dry air, the water evaporates immediately. Brrrr".

Know what else increases convection?

Who knew 80 degree pool water causes cankles?
/see pic !/

2020-09-21 2:20:18 PM
It's not the 102° air temp, or the 80° water that will freeze you.  It's getting our of the pool and the wind is blowing, dropping the air temp to 99°  which feels freezing.

Been there.  It's quite uncomfortable.

Well, as long as they're using water wisely.

You kind of have the choice NOT to live on a frying pan.

2020-09-21 2:34:37 PM
By the time I reached my teens, I'd decided that a water temp of anything below 72F was too cold.

2020-09-21 2:38:47 PM
That's why older houses have swamp coolers - they work!

They cool the Temps about 20 degrees when the mercury rises, so at 109 degrees, I was clocking 88 degrees out of my vents. So they 'work' until a certain point. And yeah, the pools start to cool down considerably once the nighttime Temps started dropping, but we never heard of an "officially too cold to swim" statement when we lived there. My stepsons would swim until the first week of October. Of course, their lips would be blue and they'd be cold when they got out, so it was straight up to the kitchen where their grandma would have hot chocolate waiting.
