Since Don only think short-term, like November, it should be an interesting pick.

Does he pick someone a little more centrist, in the hope of picking up some votes in swing states? Remember, his base will love him no matter what he does.

Or does he pick an obvious right-winger that will provoke a s***-storm and further fire up his base?

We are talking about Trump here. Always go with the worst possible option and make it somehow even worse.

I'd say his number one concern will be picking a judge who will rule in his favor when Trump v Biden reaches SCOTUS and decides the next President.

Surprisingly, he keeps to the list put out by the Federalist Society.  I really thought we'd be in for Judge Pirro by this point if Trump was completely in charge of the process, which he does not appear to be.

No doubt he'll pick a right wing woman as his selection.

That way, he'll engage in maximum stigginit, and throw out the "I thought you liberals supported women no matter what?" card.

Anyone to the right of Merrick Garland will mean the unwinding of RBG's legacy.

I expect all Republicans except Romney will confirm the nominee after the election. Even if Trump loses.

Democrats must pack the court. To do that, they must win the Senate and presidency.

And then hold them forever, knowing that republicans will instantly turn that weapon on them twice as hard at the very first opportunity. Hopefully that motivation holds up!

If any of the sitting justices had a sliver of backbone they would announce that the dying wish of their coworker was that the seat not be filled until after the election and publicly shame Trump and McConnell for disrespecting the dead.

They could have played nice and jammed someone in during the lame duck.

They are hoping brazen acts will fuel their base turnout.

You're getting the craziest one they can find for the very reasons McConnell announced they were moving immediately.

Fascist theocrats already occupy five of nine SCOTUS seats. Roberts has never seen a case in which he didn't vote in favor of the powerful.

The only solution, regardless of whether another bootlicker is installed in RBG's place, is to pack the court. Four more seats, plus 18 year term limits. And then Democrats have to remember the right will never, ever quit - not until slavery is reinstituted.

That's fine, come January if things don't go as you plan, your party can eat it's own words. Justices 10-13 being named, investigations for the next years, statehood or increased rep for PR and DC...I hope it was worth it for you all.

Good chance Judge Boof gets a proper investigation into how his credit card debt was suddenly paid off as well, which could empty his seat.

For the packing to matter they have to repair our broken elections. Add a pile of House members (doubling it would do) + electoral votes, and a state or two.

The tricky part is that they also need to fix FPTP voting so multiple viable parties can stably co-exist, or we'll be right back to this in a couple decades, after a slight party re-alignment.

Otherwise anything they do is just a very temporary fix at best, and giving more power to nutjobs later at worst.

They have, probably, until the midterms to do this, assuming they take the Senate and Presidency.

If they don't, we're basically farked for good.

White women? Hell yeah it would. They're not all That Loud One from whatever class when Marine Todd showed her and that liberal "professor" what-fer.

// also, shiva starts from the day of the BURIAL (today?), not the day she died
// which means it would end on SUNDAY
// which is erev Yom Kippur (i.e. it starts that night), and surely such a Friend of the Jews like Trump wouldn't do something like ram a SCOTUS nomination through when the Jews in the Senate (all but 2 are Democrats, including the Minority Leader) aren't likely to be there

Amy Coney Barrett. Scalia mentee, Catholic, "originalist." IIRC, she was next in line if Kavanotherbeer tanked.
