Both sides have completely flip-flopped their 2016 position on filling SC vacancies in an election year.  Hypocritical?  Yes.  Nakedly political?  Yes.  Bipartisan?  Absolutely.  The only difference is that on both occasions, the GOP controlled the Senate, and thus controlled the decision.  If Dems controlled the Senate, Garland would be in and Barrett would not get a hearing.

/Bloviating about Honor and character as if the Dems would behave any differently is just sour grapes

We need to codify the gentlemen's agreements that run the Federal Government, especially Congress. Plus, Congress should have the power to enforce their subpoeni (subpoenas?) with federal police officers if necessary.

2020-09-21 9:09:45 AM
The US government should be run exclusively with the intent of gathering as much power as you can.

The precedent has been clearly set these days

If there were any doubts that the GOP is anti democracy, this dispels them. Republicans are a threat to this country and should be treated as a domestic enemy.

2020-09-21 9:39:41 AM
Once you throw decorum out and are forced to codify every unwritten rule in the Senate, you might as well say goodbye to the spirit of Democracy.

Which is what we're doing. The only question I have today is how long before the US completely dies as a nation. If Trump gets elected the answer will be very fast.

The Federal government clearly needs a bit of re-arranging once adults get back in charge of the place.

Can we please start by making bribery illegal again?  It was a better country when bribery was illegal.

The GOP are scum and the enemy of the American people.

How does adding 6 more judges and setting off the Nuclear Option on the Senate floor sound?

Hypothetical bad stuff democrats do totally justifies real bad stuff republicans do.

They do have the power to send the sergeant at arms (who goes with federal marshals) to obtain the person in violation of the subpoena. They won't do that because reasons and furthermore.

Also that when the GOP was in power, after years and years under Obama claiming using the "nuclear option" to pass health care reform would be tyranny, literally the first thing they did to get a Trump SCOTUS nominee in was use the "nuclear option" -- the only time that has ever been done for a SCOTUS nominee.

Collins and Murkowski have been given permission to oppose a new appointment because it will help their re-election chances while still allowing the Rs to fill the vacant seat. They don't give a shiat about hypocrisy.

I wish more people would understand this, especially the first part.

It's time to make Democratic priorities in the senate need the same vote are GOP priorities.

If we are going to have this kind of no compromise winner take all type of decisions then those are the new rules.

50+1 senate votes for all Democratic priorities.  I mean, the Dems are down 3 justices, a voting rights act, healthcare is on the edge, any idea of campaign finance rules, climate legislation, progressive taxation, etc etc.

If you see a Bernie or Stein voter from 2016, thank them. Hillary was literally as bad as Trump.  They voted their conscience, so their conscience is clean, unlike all us dirty neo-liberals and people willing to settle for the lesser of two evils.

2020-09-21 10:21:41 AM
You might as well poke them with this since there's not much else to do. Yes, Republicans are hypocrites. Yes, the argument they made back then holds more water now because it's 6 weeks before an election instead of 10 months. And yes, abandoning their stated values is now the GOP'S brand and no one is surprised by this.

lol...there were people who still expected the GOP was going to honor their own interpretation of how to handle a SCJ in an election year?

They will never not be bad faith actors always out to choose party over country. With the chance to put 3 SCJs on the bench did anything think they wouldn't go all out to do it? In another decade they'll be the party that murders sitting judges to appoint their own.

They have both said they will not support a vote for SCOTUS prior to the election.  That's the key phrase.  There's a lame duck period where it can still be done no matter what the results of the election were and voters are too f*cking stupid to remember what would happen then and years to the the next election, so they can do whatever the f*ck they want immediately after the election.  I wish more people would understand this.

Speaking of which, considering their pundits were screeching about Scalia being murdered, is RBG getting autopsied?  I'm trying not to descend into conspiracy, but considering the amount of projection we've seen from them since Nixon...

It's funny how the GOP always finds a way to blame the Democrats for their own dirty tricks. "Oh, the Dems would have done this, too" they say as they do something completely unprecedented. They then immediately cry foul when the Democrats threaten to respond.

Instead of dictating that her dying wish is that they wait until next year to pick her successor, RBG should have dictated a curse. Something to the effect:  :He who defies my wishes and pushes a replacement before January 2021, shall have his penis shrunk to that of a mushroom, his hands tinied and his brain muddled with nothing but lies and falsehoods...."   You know what?  We'll rework that curse part and get back to you.

Let's be honest though.  We're both a little jealous.  At least the (R)'s have a backbone.  For them, the ends justify any means.  The (D) equivalent here would be if they retake the WH and Senate to utilize the nuclear option and pass whatever the f*ck they want including single payer and increase the size of the SCOTUS to like 13.  That is absolutely what the (R)'s do.

It wasn't the democrats that started the whole "let's not confirm a Supreme Court nominee during an election year" thing.  But yeah, both sides are bad.

Also helps Trump.  The more he can make this about the current SCOTUS vacancy, the less we're talking about the thousands of awful decisions and things he did as POTUS.

Come brothers, and I'll tell you how Jill Stein and her army of immortals blocked the door to the conference room of House Judiciary Committee, preventing them from investigating Kavanaugh's finances, perjury, and rape.

1,000 nations of the Berniebro empire forced RBG (champion of gender equality) into staying on the bench after recurring bouts with cancer so that a woman could replace her instead of a man.

I pity anyone who has to live with you. Context is so far gone I. Your life that you equivocate two things as being the same that are not.

So if I seat a fly should I be brought up on manslaughter charges?
Your a hypocrite. Your team is full of hypocrites. And all you do is come on here floating these pluralities that don't exist. Just go away. Go be annoying on some trump humping board where people will offer you lollipops for your trolling.

Stop trying to point out Republican hypocrisy.  They don't care, and their voters don't care.  Trying to shame people doesn't work on the shameless.

Instead, Democrats must recognize that Republicans are engaged in a game of raw power politics, and have been for the last 20-30 years at least.  Their only "principle" is to do whatever they can get away with.

The only appropriate response from Democrats is to respond in kind.  Stop whining about hypocrisy, stop worrying about being seen as "uncivil", and stop paying lip service to a "bipartisanship" that hasn't been possible for decades.

Use what power you have to maximum advantage, because that's what your opponents are doing and have no scruples about.  You win the White House and Senate in November, go ahead and pack the Court.  Admit DC and PR as states.  Change Congressional apportionment to neutralize gerrymanders and reduce the rural state over-representation in the EC.  Do any and all of these things, and more, and ignore the wailing about it from right-wing media.  The only principle now, as Republicans have made abundantly clear, is do what you can under the rules, and all of those things above can be done with simple acts of Congress and are perfectly Constitutional.
