Why?

They had a great album almost 30 years ago that was preceded by, and followed by, decent albums.  I'd say this band punches above its weight, but really, they don't punch much.

And without the high harmonies from the crazy bass lady, how is this interesting at all?

They didn't even have enough good songs to fill Mellon Collie and went downhill after that.

Hang it the fark up, Billy Boy.

This is a true statement.  Even more egregious in my eyes is the new single "Colour of Love".  Is the extra u in color a Chicago thing or he's channeling his inner Madonna and now identifies as a Brit because he watched an episode of Fawlty Towers?

It's damn near impossible to nail a double album, about the only two I can think of that are solid are The Fragile and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

There's no way you're hitting that magic again Billy, especially now. Hell, Mellon Collie was the peak of S.P.

Even in the early 90s I could only listen to them for about two songs before I got bored.  Their sound is like ice cream: thick and sweet but you get sick of it fast.

Hahaha. I'm sorry. I went from posting a few counterexamples to piling on real quick. I honestly wasn't trying to be a dick about it, I just started thinking of them and GISing and kind of lost track of things.

Wu Tang Forever is another one, though.

No worries.
FWIW, I'll own that I'm not familiar enough with the others posted to know they were double albums even if I know of them and some stuff on them.
Tend to stick with most of the industrial and metal as taste in music goes.

I enjoyed that set.
There's a place here that has the vinyl copy still sealed for sale. I desperately want it, but don't want to spend the 300.00 they're asking for it.

The fragile/mellon collie are defintely fantastic double albums.

I had the box set of Aeroplane back in the day; I hid packs of cigarettes from my parents in it.  When I saw them in.. 96? i think it was 96, they opened the concert with Aeroplane Flies High.

Love them in that era!

"Gish" spun my head. I was a bit ambivalent to get on the Seattle/grunge train - I was firmly in the Madchester camp at that time, digging the 70's-style guitar licks over the noise - but I heard "Rhinoceros" on the radio one day and bought the album. I was hooked after one listen. I thought Siamese Dream was equivalent to Gish, but my interest slowly dropped with subsequent albums.

How do they have Zen Arcade and not Double Nickles? I've always felt those bands and especially those two albums were inexorably linked.

Mellon Collie was good, and if you restructure the Machina albums there's a good double hiding in there.
So i say bring on another double album, i'll be checking it out.

To add to the growing collection above, here's a fantastic lesser known double. A studio disc packed with funky prog nuggets, and a live one containing some serious potent extended jams by people who knew how to bring it on stage.

I saw them in concert last year in Prague and that was a great show. Two days earlier I also saw TOOL and they were also great. Performances were on point and really sounded good. No bullshiat just cool shows all around. I guess if you survive all of the crap of fame and excess, the professionalism takes center stage.

Gish is their best album. Then Siamese Dream. True story.
