I feel that this passage was scarily prescient in retrospect:

"The President in particular is very much a figurehead - he wields no real power whatsoever. He is apparently chosen by the government, but the qualities he is required to display are not those of leadership but those of finely judged outrage. For this reason the President is always a controversial choice, always an infuriating but fascinating character. His job is not to wield power but to draw attention away from it. On those criteria Zaphod Beeblebrox is one of the most successful Presidents the Galaxy has ever had - he has already spent two of his ten presidential years in prison for fraud."


You think that's prescient? I've been reading through the series again and towards the beginning of So Long and Thanks For All the Fish, there's this line, written in 1984:

Uncle Eazy: Books were good. I've never heard the radio play but I'd love to.

The movie made a few years back ranks right up there as one of the worst movies ever made. And that list includes Godzilla from the late 90s and Mystery Men.

When HHGG first aired, I thought that Adams had a grand plan for the story in which Arthur eventually travels back in time and becomes instrumental in the founding of the Guide, which of course eventually saves him.

Later I learned that Douglas Adams was pretty much making things up as he went along, and had no idea how long the BBC was going to let him get away with it.

The movie wasn't the worst thing ever made (Zooey Dachenn...whatever) is always adorable but it's too bad that it didn't do well enough for the rest of the books to be made. It should get a Netflix series. With Zooy Deachaeane....whatever and that guy who's always cool, whatever he's in.

I made my wife sit through it.
She complained that she couldn't follow the plot. When I pointed out there wasn't one it made more sense to her.

It's got some good performances, but the forced romance between Arthur and Trillian kills it for me.

You don't need a guide for a galaxy where you fall out the front door in your dressing gown one day and end up with your dick in Zooey Deschanel.

When they were recording the radio series, the actors would be recording their lines for a scene while DNA was in the room next door frantically coming up with script for the next scene.

The whole thing was shambolic which is a given for Adams constant procrastination but somehow it all came together.

I loved most of the books in high school, but I tried re-reading them a few years ago and quit after the first. They were just so mean-spirited to me in a way I hadn't noticed before. A humor based on humiliation and terrible things happening in "ironic" ways. I don't have time for that shiat post 2016.

Is it that Mystery Men was truly bad or was it in fact a sparkling gem, unnoticed among the paste jewelry except by those with the insight to recognize its true value?

Truly it was a movie that posed many questions.

I thought Cracked was OOB after being sold to that Cheeseburger content thief a while back. They basically cut all contributor pay rates to nothing and started to steal memes for their merchandise. This link didn't exactly make a case for them.

I didn't like the Artemis Fowl book. But I have no problem with the ending being that the Earth is destroyed.
