It was my impression that it wasn't the concept of Tik Tok but that they weren't paying Donny protection money.

What did you expect from the guy who runs every enterprise like a mafia family?

So Bytedance (and thus China) still own and control TikTok, but Oracle and Wally World get a piece?  Nothing changes except who gets paid?  Wasn't this supposedly about Chinese data mining/espionage?

Facebook (and the app they were readying to supplant TikTok with once Idiotboy's ban was in place) won't be happy about this...

/yeah, yeah, it's Hirocheeto.  It's really about teenagers making him look bad.

Having an elected president acting like he is king of the land and his pronouncements are law is also bad.

It's about who gave Trump the biggest cut.

TikTok hurt his feelings by making him think a million people were gonna show up to his Juneteenth Klan rally in Tulsa, when only 6200 people ended up going.

That's all there is to this. He's now decided to add "destroy TikTok because some of their users made fun of me and hurt my feelings" to his list of life goals, alongside "send the editor of Spy Magazine a picture of my hands at least once a month, every month, forever, because they made fun of me and hurt my feelings" and "destroy as much of President Obama's legacy as possible because he made fun of me and hurt my feelings".

The most asinine part of this whole situation is Trump still arguing that whomever buys TikTok should pay the federal government. Why? Cause he made them sell in order to continue operating in the US. That's a farking shakedown.

What's next? "Protection" fees to keep tariffs to help alleviate foreign competition? Oh, wait, they already have those, they're called campaign contributions.

2020-09-19 10:21:41 PM
One of two things must be true: A. TikTok was not a national security threat, and it just got (probably illegally) railroaded by the president as a show of force. B. TikTok is a national security threat, and trump has literally put a price tag on the national interest.

He needs the money so he can bribe voters in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Georgia. Of course he's already repurposed taxpayer money for these things.

I am knee deep in central Pennsylvania shiatkicker country.

I have been spending the summer politely introducing myself to business owners with TRUMP flags, explaining they won't get my business.

I make a point to show them my driver's licence so they can look me up on the internet and confirm, yeah, I have money.

And they can reflect on that never hitting their tills.

Here, I'm just an anonymous Jack wad.

"TikTok Global, together with Oracle, SIG, General Atlantic, Sequoia, Walmart and Coatue will create an educational initiative to develop and deliver an AI-driven online video curriculum to teach children from inner cities to the suburbs, a variety of courses from basic reading and math to science, history and computer engineering."

Awww....isn't that adorable.  There's nothing like the vagueness of corporate-speak to obscure the fact that nothing substantial will ever become of this.

Subby is prbably right, and Trump removed all regulatory oversight so this is a victory for the free market. Alas.

2020-09-20 12:58:25 AM
Trump said the deal will also include a $5 billion fund for US education, though he did not say which companies would be making the payment.

Maybe Mexico will pay for that too.

2020-09-20 12:59:46 AM
Welp, the president banned a social media site for making fun of him, and then forced its sale through crony capitalism... But at least we have the moral high ground of not being China!

2020-09-20 1:02:47 AM
Trump had previously expressed a desire for the companies to make a payment to the US Treasury, but was surprised when he was told such an arrangement would be illegal.

Hahahah..... *quiet sobbing*

Plus, we have no laws requiring companies owned in the US, hosting US customers, to keep the data in the US. So China can still muck with it.

Listen, Trump got to announce that they gave him $5 billion to make history patriotic. It means he is a dealmaker and we don't have to worry about the Chinese government monitoring Americans through their cell phones instead of just Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg.

If there's anything you should have learned by all the tuttutting over Tiktok is that Americans only cared that Americans weren't the ones raping their privacy for financial benefit.

Now that Wal*Mart is getting a cut of the financial gains all the chittering about the evils of TikTok will disappear.

" The deal will also include Wal-Mart (WMT), Trump said, adding that "the security will be 100 percent. They'll be using separate clouds and very, very powerful security."

Separate clouds?   See, this is why I hate the term "the cloud" ... its goddamned hosted service.  The exact same shiat that's been around since ..... I dunno, forever.  The 80s?

I have a personal theory.  Business guys are idiots.  I mean, if youre a business guy .... I'm sorry you're an idiot.  BUT  ... in Visio , the symbol for the internet is a cloud.  I am 100% confident that  idiot business people  in a meeting somewhere saw this on a slide and  instead of their tiny brains going "Ohh. the data is going across the internet to some datacenter" or whatever, they literally think it's going to a special place that's actually called "the cloud"  -   I cannot prove this is true, but circumstantial evidence consistently supports my hypothesis.   Since idiot business peoples favorite past time is copying whatever new jargon their peers have been shiatting out, the term just spread.

This is just an evolution of that line of thinking.

When I read about this the other day, it was a done deal, and Trump was not involved.

Is this like his amazing brokering of a peace deal between two nations in the Middle East that weren't at war?

Keep in mind that shiatbag Larry Ellison runs Oracle. He also told Trump a few months ago to go buy hydroxycloroquine which he did and the stockpile ended up in a landfill basically. Larry is a typical rich white a-hole who has Trumps war so I'm not shocked his crappy tech company is involved.

I know laws don't matter any more but I need an explanation from someone smarter than myself. I get that the President, for national security purposes, could block an app (please start with Twitter, Facebook, etc.). However, how does that office have the power to force the sale of company A to company B?

If he can block something due to natsec, he can choose not to block it if it stops being a natsec issue.

That logic makes sense.

Obviously it seems nothing changed natsec-wise.

You answered your own question in your opening line.

In away, a shakedown is refreshing.  It's rational, if scummy and anti-capitalistic. Reflect that Trump has bought into Q, which thinks there's a kiddy porn ring run out of the basement of a place that doesn't have a basement.

Once you start denying basic physical reality, abstract concepts like law lose all meaning, except as props to further whatever delusion you fancy that day.
