I've own six vws over the years, including a really nice 1969 convertible.  I'm not one to normally say this, but that thing is bare butt ugly.  Shoulda left it as original and painted it like The Merry Pranksters' Magic Bus or some such

Sure, it's only a 1.6L four banger, but you save so much weight with air cooling you'll never tell it's only 50 horsepower.

SpaceMonkey-66: 1969 convertible

I had a friend with a 62 pull back top and the three speed semi-automatic transmission.  That thing was a blast to drive.

So top speed 32 mph except when going uphill and it's -5 mph?

The site really has become a parody of itself.
Some fine examples of garbage cars have sold for way way beyond their actual value because BaT.

Hit 50mph on the downhills.

Still, have the only one at the VW show.

Also gotta wonder why they gave up on this project at this point, after deciding to do the thing in the first place.
They hit some sort of dead end, either in the build or with money.

Yep, looks like shiat. That thing is a poor Frankenvan and it looks just terrible. They didn't even try to match the 'addition' to the original body. Meaning the rounded corners of the VW Van combined with the sharp corners and square style of the 'camper' just makes it look like a redneck backyard project.

Fugly. Makes regular VWs looks like Euro supercars.

I would be scared to drive it on anything but perfectly level ground.

On the plus side, once you rip that camper shell and that butchered body off the frame, you should have a nice rolling platform to mount a restored microbus shell to.

Name doesn't check out, this guy gets it.
According to the listing, there's only like 6 of these left.

a 150-km/h speedometer

That sounds very optimistic.

Getting anywhere from home requires pulling out into 40 or 60 mile per hour traffic with not a lot of visibility. It's doable in a car made in this century.  I'll have to pass on this bit of history.

Missing a carb if it's a 74. Which is fine, the dual carbs ran like shiat anyway.

/I actually owned one of the old school (1961) VW microbuses back in the day. Definitely viewed as cool at the time but I spent a lot of time with the pedal to the floor going up even slight grades. In the end, engine blew and the frame rusted thru (completely/broke) in front of the rear axle. On the same day!

Yeah, my first reaction on seeing this before submission was "Step 1: rip out the engine and drop in an overbored 2.2 liter with some kind of 5 speed custom transmission with two very long, low first gears for getting up to speed. Step 2: MASSIVE fan and maybe weld some old Pentium 1 heat sinks all over the block. Step 3: Install two extra boat fuel tanks with a transfer pump. Step 4: Never, ever drive it in a crosswind unless you add training wheels.

I bet you $5 that Matthew McConaughey sees it and snaps it up. That thing has "weed van" written all over it.

Really the 411 wagon had to be one of the worst designed VW's ever.  My parents owned 411 station wagon when I was a kid, the engine placement within the wagon version was poorly designed/cramped.  And no engine overheating warning light either when it happened, our 411 just decided it had enough and started to flame then burn everything, pooooof!(followed by a bunch of black smoke).  I think the square backs and 412's were maybe a little bit safer, but some 411 wagons had real problems with engine placement/airflow in their cramped back quarters that would make them do that.
We also owned 2 Bugs('63 and 71), one of my sisters owned a VW Bus and another sister had a Karmann Ghia(with the weird autostick thing), but the 411 wagons were always problematical.

I learned in high school auto shop exactly why vw engines immolate themselves. Typically it was a plain rubber fuel hose going from pump to carb, no armor on the hose or guard over the belt. . The fan belt breaks, breaks the hose, engine keeps running and pumps,a bunch more gas into the fire, by the time you know its on fire its all you can do to get out safely...

I've driven one of those VW bus in a windstorm.

It's less like steering a van and more like using a tiller on a sailboat.

That design just weirds me out. It's like a head with the face missing.

Circular headlights in the correct positions could have saved it. And would it have killed them to bring that middle section to a classic point, rather than that rounded off, half-assed blob?

It looks like it was designed by a committee. None of the pieces fit. All the details are at odds with each other.

True, If it was a US market '74.  IDK what was in the Mexican market buses.  That looks like a type 2 engine, not the type 4 we got in the States.

What happened to the heater hoses?

Or designed by Homer Simpson.
