Bob and Ruthie,
Side by side,
Went out for an auto ride.
Bob hit a bump,
Ruth hit a tree,
And Bob kept driving, Ruthlessly.

CSB...

A couple years ago, near the bar I used to frequent, I noticed a crap load of police and firetrucks all screaming past me.  Curious, I did a little research while enjoying my first pint.

Somebody did a swandive off a nearby bridge onto the highway 13 stories below.  By some fluke, he starfished directly onto the hood of some poor woman doing about 120km/hr.  Needless to say, he splashed, and she needed a serious drink and a change of underwear.

Turns out the jumper had murdered his wife and kids in a nearby apartment building, and this was his endgame.

No video, but judging from the pictures, it's clear that the problem was that the car in question had the passenger side in the wrong place.

CSS...

I had a friend out in California that was legally blind in his right eye. He was not a drinker, but he liked live music. One night at a club, a girl got in a fight with her boyfriend, and Tony offered her a ride home. By the time they left, she had done shots and was drunk off her ass. As he drove on I 80, he glanced over and saw her sitting on the door,  hanging out the window. He tried to talk her into sitting back down, and was planning on getting off on the next exit. He glanced over a minute later, and she was gone. He pulled right over, and saw her laying half on, half off the road, in pretty bad shape. He got a blanket out of his car and spread it out next to her, intending to get her onto it and pull her off the road. He went around to the side of the road, and another car came along and drove right over her, right where he had just been standing. If she wasn't dead before, she was dead then.  The other driver pulled over for a minute, then left to go call the police. Tony was arrested that night, but once they confirmed his story,  they released him. He had some PTSD after that incident.

SpaceyCat: Why the fark didn't they arrest her?  No seat belt laws in the UK?

Yes, they do. But, you know, people are not arrested for not wearing their seat belt, they are fined.

Are you saying that you think failure to use a seatbelt is an arrestable offence?

Yes, they do. But, you know, people are not arrested for not wearing their seat belt, they are fined.

And even then, the officer is probably going to use their discretion and chalk that up as an "own goal" as the experience will be more of a deterrent than any fine.

(I used to work for the police force involved here,  before switching to ambulance, I have a decent idea what the traffic officers are like)

It is probably for the best. You know how those type a videos are, you watch one then you see a related video and you gotta watch that one too. It's like popcorn. Next thing you know you lost 45 minutes.

When the police came, she obviously wasn't in a car, so she couldn't be fined for a seatbelt violation.

They could have fined her for being a pedestrian on the highway, though.

People don't get arrested for traffic citations.
I don't know about British law but in the U.S not wearing a seatbelt is not a capital offense.

Unless you are black.

I thought courts frowned on prior restraint.
