While he may not be high profile with the general public, he represents an actor that can be saved or abandoned from scientology. Saving him may allow for the new recruiting of actors to scientology 'because they care (tm)' and keeping the scam going.

I think they are mentioning it as noteworthy because how often the victims have been minors lately. Also legitimate curiosity for some fark lawyers or law-knowing people, what is the procedure that prosecutors use or how do they prove someone is guilty on a very old crime where physical evidence may be hard to come by? I've always wondered.

He can't even get his terminology right. If he really was being targeted for being a Scientologist, that would be religious persecution, not political. Scientology doesn't have any strong political leanings. It wants a cut of everyone's money.

Actors in big TV shows that are in syndication get residual money. I'm sure he's doing fine. Not Tom Cruise money but at least Kirsty Alley (also in the cult) money, depending on what she's getting from Cheers and how many Star Trek conventions she does.

Political gain in what way? When a DA prosecutes an accused rapist, normal people don't say "Oh, it's all just politics." They say "Yeah, that's part of a DA's job."

Taking him down isn't some difficult achievement that's going to reap big rewards and praise for the DA. His case is just another tawdry "Where are they now?" story that took an incredibly dark turn.

2020-09-19 12:34:07 PM
The statute of limitations on even violent rape is usually around five years or so (because prosecution relies on testimony more than physical evidence, it's a practical issue not a comment on the severity of the crime) and less for other forms of sexual misconduct.

It says the victims were twenty ish, so the clock wasn't extended by the whole "the count starts at eighteen" thing. So... what's going on here? I feel like whatever he did to make it even legal to file twenty year old charged at all has to be more interesting than the case itself. Did they keep working for him afterwards, or did the cos commit a second crime to cover something up and prevent timely filing? Were formal accusations in the form of a police complaint made in time and the DA was just derelict in his duty until they finally decided to belatedly do their job?

I've always felt this guy had a creep vibe, even during the height of his 70's show fame.  Same with the mohawk pedo guy from Glee, Kevin Spacey, Chris D'Elia.

People always act so shocked, like, "I can't believe it, i hope it isn't true", and i'm like, "seriously?  You didn't see this a mile away"?

What you're experiencing is known as Confirmation Bias. A friend of mine is convinced that she can predict the sex of an unborn baby just by looking at the pregnant mother. She can't. She simply remembers the times she's right and discounts the times she's wrong.

I hear the logic, and i'm guilty of it on certain other topics, but i promise you i never for 1 second believed Masterson or the Glee star to be righteous individuals, and i had only their appearance to go by.  I simply immediately disliked their vibe the moment i first saw them.

The guy was never such a big deal that anyone cared who he was outside of the show. This isn't a Cosby-level shocker that completely upends our opinions of a formerly beloved performer. It's a "Who? Oh right, a 70s Show actor who wasn't Ashton Kutchner, Mila Kunis or Clarence Boddicker. What was his character's name again?" situation where first and foremost he's some rando accused of serious crimes, and his prior job on a sitcom is just a footnote.

Prosecuting high profile people always comes with a political gain. It's a way for the DA to say they are tough on crime no matter who commits the crime.

Most people correctly believe rich, powerful and/or famous people can buy themselves out of trouble, which they usually can. This guy superceded his status and is now in the "see, the law applues to everyone" category DA's will use for their political benefit.

Right, but this guy isn't high profile. He just thinks he is. Unlike the rest of the 70s Show cast, he hasn't gone on to do much of anything else, and he wasn't that big a deal back when it was on. As lower tier semi-celebrity takedown cases go, he's small fish compared to Aunt Becky. He's not even in Jake Lloyd's league.
