Meh. So has China's ban on facebook, google, whatsapp etc. impacted communication the other way around for years now. There is always alternatives.

If not, let them protest the Chinese government to break down the Great Firewall because that is the real issue.
I communicate with China a lot and I'd perfectly o.k. with this for that reason alone.

Trump doesn't care about US businesses, or families communicating or Chinese spying. What Trump cares about is that users of a Chinese app hurt his fee-fees. And that's it, because his ego is what drives every action taken by the Trump administration.

it means losing trust/favorability from the Chinese community in the U.S towards the U.S . avg non political guy that use wechat to talk to his mom every week is going to be affected so he his going to be angry at Dump he won't care that what's app is banned in china or mars or anywhere else but your hitting him personally in a direct way. kinda like when china mess around with vpn access in china it piss of the expat community to no ends.

imo also the mandarin to english translator is much better then googles. so they use it all the time to go about their normal lives. (before the LeArN EnGrIsH crowd ... lot's of elder parents coming over for family re-union because their kid got a job or something most people don't have much luck learning a brand new language in their 50's-60's +)

Iphone users are farked.

What I'd suggest is to not sideload either app, because as you rightly point out, they come with something nasty.

Instead install an official app store, like the very obvious AppGallery directly from Huawei. They obviously have both TikTok and Wechat. Furthermore, they unlike Google and Apple, also have Fortnite (if that's your thing).

Let's not forget students. Chinese students enrolled in American colleges and universities use WeChat to communicate with academic and administration officials. As if this semester wasn't chaotic enough, imagine having one of your lines of communication cut.

And these students tend to pay full tuition for attending, meaning if they go the entire institution could feel the crunch.

The Chinese have access to the exact same data that American companies do because American companies buy and sell that data as a matter of doing business.  If your real concern is data security and privacy, which is a legitimate issue, then sure, complain.  If your only complaint is that the Chinese are also getting that same data, and using it for government dossiers on individuals, then you're missing the forest for the trees because that's not a China specific issue.

When Americans discover a new smart phone costs $12,000, they'll give a shiat.

China is still the draconian hellhole it was when they got most favored nation status. Nobody gave a shiat then and nobody gives a shiat now.

The Chinese population won't care because their daily use of WeChat won't change. Their entire economy is based on WeChat being the equivalent of a debit card here. They can still scan bar codes and and go on about their business. But people like me, who does business in China regularly, are affected because it's harder for us to connect. Sure, we can use WhatsApp, but not everybody has it when compared to WeChat. Like the tariffs, Americans are the people adversely affected.
