So, the school doesn't ask about legal issues during admissions.  Fine, why didn't even one person spend ten seconds googling her name before letting her pick her classes?

Would a guy that went to jail for having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend when he was 18 be allowed to take classes there?  Especially classes with a likely high number of female students?  Somehow I doubt it.

Bigger question is that she pleaded guilty in April.  OF 2019!  Why the hell hasn't she been sentenced yet?

She's an adult, and at this point, only accused.  Let her take what she wants.  The names of various courses are included in the article purely for speculation of the reader.  I took classes titled "The Sex Offender" and "Violence and Terrorism" and "Poverty"    They're not how-to courses.  Sociology has a lot of those courses.

Careful, there.  Many ITT are getting perilously close to the kind of scorn we condemn from our more, ahem... authoritarian... countrymen.

She's allowed to better herself.  In any manner available to the rest of us.  Shouldn't this be encouraged in the spirit of rehabilitation?  Or is the only allowable reaction from society perpetual scorn and punishment?

At what point does her sentence move on from punishment to rehabilitation?

Or are punishment and revenge the only tolerable motives?

I certainly don't like her, nor will I defend her past actions, but I will defend her freedoms.  And warn you about a precipice.

As far as I know, the University of California doesn't tell anybody what classes they may or may not take.  I went to a podunk state college, and I knew people there that had been busted for various things.  Okay, usually it was "Minor in Possession", but outside of maybe Bob Jones U., I don't know of too many colleges that get overly picky about the morals of their students, provided their check for tuition wasn't returned NSF.

When I was in my undergrad program, I had a crush on my Sociology professor. I was looking for a Senior elective and saw her class "Sex Roles in Modern Society" and went to ask her about it before I signed up. She encouraged me to take it because "I get very few men in that class." She studied adult entertainers and sex workers (and this was in the early 1980s). One of the optional field trips was to a drag show. It was fun and interesting.

My parents were friends with a local writer for the Atlanta newspaper's Sunday Magazine.* She was a fairly proper Southern lady. She wrote an article about my professor, including a trip to the male stripper show at a local club called "The Lemon Peel." I had a great time hearing about my mom's "proper" friend stuffing dollar bills into sweaty men's g-strings.

I worked for a U once and let me tell you, the registrar's office has a shiat-ton of other stuff to do than Googling the background of every student to make sure they aren't taking something that may be a little hinky.

And before you say it, there are a lot of people who have no damn idea who Mack is.

She's been convicted of some charges, and is awaiting trial on others. The court allowed her to go to school, work, and church while under house arrest awaiting sentencing.

I'm watching it now too and it is disturbing!!

And yeah, they do have a lot of footage and recordings!!

The only part I don't like is the artsy-fartsy new age crap they throw in between scenes.
But I think that's Mark's involvement (He did "What the Bleep Do We Know")

Considering that she plead guilty to racketeering, was involved in all sorts of sexual abuse and is currently awaiting sentencing, this is the sort of thing which should forestall matriculation at a university.  Sorry, come back when you're on parole.

Be honest, a man in the same situation would almost certainly have been denied entry.

FTFA: "UC-Berkeley, like all schools that fall under the UC umbrella, enacted a 'Beyond the Box' initiative in 2016, eliminating the requirement that students disclose 'criminal justice information,' like past convictions or even active legal proceedings, during the college admissions process."

So not only did Mack not have to reveal her guilty pleas to the admissions office, they can't even ask her about it.

Besides, it's not like she murdered her own mother.

So where do people stand on her? Was she evil, from the start, knowingly going along with this open eyed, or was she groomed like the rest of them, 'brainwashed', and then used as part of the process, instead of just an ordinary 'sex slave'? People can't seem to make up their minds. Either grooming and these techniques are effective and can get people with issues to do whatever the groomer wants, or they all have free will and grooming isn't a thing (once your past 18)? People seem to want to have it both ways.

I'm watching The Vow and so far they haven't really gotten in to how she got started or so high up.

What I commented to my wife was how much paperwork and lesson plans and levels there are to this thing.

This isn't a "let's smoke pot and dance in the woods" type cult.  This involves so many levels and so many "classes" people take, course loads that had to be written, studied, memorized.

It looks like this guy created an entire college (for lack of a better word) and on the side was this "oh by the way, let's create a sex cult" aspect!

And so much was documented (videos, phone calls, etc etc) that you'd think they'd say "at the VERY least, let's not call the hierarchy "master" and "slave", you know.... just in case"

Plus, a tattoo wouldn't raise half as many red flags as branding.

What IS shocking is from what I've seen, they say "I want to tell you about this secret club, but FIRST I need collateral!"

FIRST they need it.   Before even saying what the club IS.
And the fact SO MANY did it ANYWAY is shocking.

It's worth a view, this The Vow.

Hard to tell. The HBO doc is kind of strange. It's pretty detailed, but much like the McMillions doc it's incredibly drawn out. Hell, I thought the first episode was basically a recruiting video for NXIVM.

From what they've shown of her, she was recruited into the main cult through acquaintances, and bought in pretty quickly. That, along with her notoriety is probably what got her the the leadership role in the sub-cult (the sex trafficking/slave one).

But they're sort of only in the middle of that part of the story, even though they're like 5 episodes deep.
