No.

Arguably not even the best receiver of his generation, and receivers have a tough time getting in early.

He SHOULD be in, but it wouldn't surprise me if it took a few years.

I think he should be just as compensation for spending his career in Detroit

Very good player but not a hall of famer.  Only led the league in receiving twice and he didn't play long enough or win enough.  Hall of fames in all sports are watered down now bc they're businesses  who need people to come in and pay money so he'll probably get in.

There isn't a receiver alive who would've caught half the balls Johnson saw.  He wasn't getting hit in the numbers.  Every stat was earned in double and triple coverage.  Cause the Lions are terrible.

STFU & GTFO.

Think he should be in, don't think he should be in, that's fine. But "he should be in but not first ballot" is stupid.

I don't object to multiple years of eligibility. Some careers need more time to reveal how they fit into history of the game. So if you're not sure and take a wait and see approach. Good. Or if there too many equally or more deserving players who you think should get a vote, fine.

But this "Oh, he's going in but let's make him wait for no other reason than pettiness" is stupid.

Meh, it's football, and you're using baseball arguments.

Has anybody ever had it so rough in football?

First Reggie Ball is his quarterback, then he goes to the Lions.

And Johnson would have caught twice as many balls if Stafford ever bothered to learn to throw with touch and finesse sometimes instead of "unleashing the dragon" and firing every pass as hard as he possibly can.

Speaking as a Bears fan: it should have been a TD.

I like Calvin by the eye test, but if someone argued Fitzgerald I'd shrug.

Hall of Famer? Definitely considering there's plenty of worse players in the hall (looking at you Joe), first ballot? lmfao gtfooh

Typical of fark every single time hall of fame for football comes up.  The hall of fame for football is 'were you kinda good for a long long time (see: Morten Andersen)' 'were you really good for a long time' (most people) or 'were you INSANELY good for a short time (gale sayers).

Baseball hall of fame says 'were you one of the greatest ball players at your position in your generation'.

For example, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger were all drafted in 2004.  All historically very great quarterbacks with long careers.  In the NFL, all 3 are shoo-ins for the hall of fame.  Baseball hall of fame would see one of them enter the hall of fame, maybe.  Especially since Tom Brady was only drafted a couple years earlier and is objectively MUCH better than them.

Calvin Johnson however doesn't even fit this argument.  He's objectively one of the best wide receivers to ever play the game.  Had he kept playing, Jerry Rices records would've been pulverized.

All things considered, both Rivers and Roethlisberger *are* actually good quarterbacks, at least their overall body of work.

Manning is Elite Flacco with one more ring.

Joe Namath is the most overrated person to do anything ever.

What about N Johnson

TO didn't get in the first time and he had 70 more TD than Calvin Johnson.

Nope.

Didn't play long enough IMO.

He also played with Steve Young and Jerry Rice for 4 seasons.

He's also a dick, which matters in a popularity contest.

Seems like a really odd choice for a comparison.  Not sure Jon Gruden is overrated by anyone except Mark Davis and probably some Raiders fans.  No one is insisting he be enshrined in Canton.
