NikolaiFarkoff: a flying monkey made me do it: I don't think George Floyd qualifies as a hero.  What did he do that makes him exemplary?
He shouldn't have been killed, no.  What happened to him was terrible and no one in that position deserves to be killed by the police.  But what did he do that schoolkids should also do?  Either it was a hamfisted assignment or I'm missing something, or both.

Yeah, they put George Floyd along with Gandhi and Malcolm X? Rittenhouse AND one of his victims?

This entire assignment sounds like it was just trying to make the news.

My essay:

Kyle was a hero because he gave old white guys half an election for 3 minutes while they indulged their own murder fantasies at the expense of innocent lives.

Texas is not an open carry state unless you have a License To Carry. It seems more like we we need a Chicago tag to cover the dozens of weekly senseless shootings despite their harsh gun laws ("Oh, but Indiana!!" - yeah, yeah, yeah, then why doesn't Indiana or Texas have this crap happen every day...)

Texans are too busy dealing with exploding deregulated industrial locations to have time to run around shooting one another.

Lee Harvey Oswald is way, way up my list of "modern heroes" from Vile Kyle shiattenhouse.

I don't even like LHO. I think he was a dim, phoney wannabe and probably a Psych Op.

But you know what they say, of the dead, speak no evil.

I wish I could say the same abbout Vile Kyle. But he resolutely refuses to be excusable.

We see Texas and immediately assume the worst of the teacher's intentions. But the common denominator in all the people suggested for the assignment is that they are people who are lionized for one reason or another, maybe even justifiably, but they were also assholes.

Maybe the purpose of the assignment was to explore the idea of a man as a symbol vs a the man himself.

I agree it was a bad idea, considering most people are way too stupid to understand that kind of complexity, but maybe he was actually trying to... teach.

Well, once he and five other men broke into a pregnant woman's house, George pressed a pistol barrel into her pregnant belly and they all robbed her. That's pretty exemplary.

Also, he was murdered by police

There is a very simple answer to this question.  He was a victim.  A completely unwilling victim.

He was a victim of systemic racism.  He was a victim of a system that has allowed cops to act without consequences for entirely too long.

Just keep in mind for a moment that that sort of thing has been going on every day for decades.  And if THIS incident had not been caught on tape, nothing would have come of it.  And that sort of thing would still be going on unchecked.

Does this make Floyd a hero?  No.  But he has still been elevated to one who's death created a movement which is creating positive action.  And for that he will be remembered as a hero.

If I were given the assignment to write an essay, that is the angle I would take.

Doesn't a martyr die on purpose for a cause? He is not a martyr because I don't think he had any intention of dying. He is a victim of a racist system for sure.
