NM Volunteer: a flying monkey made me do it: I don't think George Floyd qualifies as a hero.  What did he do that makes him exemplary?
He shouldn't have been killed, no.  What happened to him was terrible and no one in that position deserves to be killed by the police.  But what did he do that schoolkids should also do?  Either it was a hamfisted assignment or I'm missing something, or both.

George Floyd isn't a hero.  He is a martyr.

Doesn't a martyr die on purpose for a cause? He is not a martyr because I don't think he had any intention of dying. He is a victim of a racist system for sure.

Texas needs its own tag

Texas is not an open carry state unless you have a License To Carry. It seems more like we we need a Chicago tag to cover the dozens of weekly senseless shootings despite their harsh gun laws ("Oh, but Indiana!!" - yeah, yeah, yeah, then why doesn't Indiana or Texas have this crap happen every day...)

Yeah, sure, you can't open carry a pistol in Texas. You know who is super mad about it and protests it in Texas?

Oh right, rifles in Starbucks in Texas are perfectly fine

Nazi kills protester In "self-defense" after getting a plastic bag thrown at him, then shoots two others after they try to stop him (like Republicans keep saying people should do during mass shooting situations) = lauded as a hero by Republicans.

Protester kills Nazi in a far clearer case of self defense, as bear spray is a bigger threat than a plastic bag = demonized then assassinated by the Federal government.

Most don't die by their own intention. A martyr would be someone unjustly killed whose death becomes politically important to those on opposing the people who did the killing.

But regardless of what word we use, the man was killed by a procedure that 5th grader should know is lethal force while other cops just watched.

There is a very simple answer to this question.  He was a victim.  A completely unwilling victim.

He was a victim of systemic racism.  He was a victim of a system that has allowed cops to act without consequences for entirely too long.

Just keep in mind for a moment that that sort of thing has been going on every day for decades.  And if THIS incident had not been caught on tape, nothing would have come of it.  And that sort of thing would still be going on unchecked.

Does this make Floyd a hero?  No.  But he has still been elevated to one who's death created a movement which is creating positive action.  And for that he will be remembered as a hero.

If I were given the assignment to write an essay, that is the angle I would take.

Well, once he and five other men broke into a pregnant woman's house, George pressed a pistol barrel into her pregnant belly and they all robbed her. That's pretty exemplary.

Also, he was murdered by police

Not to mention Gandhi wasn't exactly a nice guy and Malcolm X... eesh! I don't even know who the last guy is, which leaves us with Cesar Chavez. So my answer to the second question would likely include the phrase "process of elimination."

Re: Floyd, I could see him as a viable symbol.  Humans functioning as symbols aren't necessarily good human being, nor exemplary for their behaviors but something about them "means something" His victimhood and the exemplar (not the good kind) of police behavior towards him perhaps marked him out as a visible symbol of systemic police racism.

Fire the farking teacher and any one in an administrative  position who either approved it or failed to kill the assignment before it saw the light of day.

never allow them to work at any school ever again.

We see Texas and immediately assume the worst of the teacher's intentions. But the common denominator in all the people suggested for the assignment is that they are people who are lionized for one reason or another, maybe even justifiably, but they were also assholes.

Maybe the purpose of the assignment was to explore the idea of a man as a symbol vs a the man himself.

I agree it was a bad idea, considering most people are way too stupid to understand that kind of complexity, but maybe he was actually trying to... teach.

Too bad you dummies don't understand how to read data.

Indianapolis beat the pants off Chicago for murders. Two cities in Texas are pretty darn close to Chicago.
