most everyone can agree that the country is going to hell, there is just a severe disagreement as to the cause

Yeah, the Founders really hated America. They can't even say it's exceptional. One even said we are like other nations.

The ones who are saying its going to hell : the religious right, are the big reason it is going to hell.

I used to play this game as a kid where I'd let go of my balloon and grab the string before it got out of reach.

When it actually did get out of reach?
Game over, dumbass. And your balloon is gone.

As any adult watching was surely snickering under their breath.

A majority of the Founding father's thought that the revolution was a bad idea, and a bunch of the signatures on the declaration of independence are the same signatures on the reconciliation letter they sent to the king...

Who never actually got to read it.

Zero, not one, of my immigrant ancestors chose the USA or any British colonies to live in. My ancestors chose colonies of France and Spain to live in, and the USA through violence or vulgar money deals. My ancestors all became chattel to this disgrace of a system with the no-choice of abandon the life you crossed an ocean in primitive ape times before combustion motors or accept the yoke of America.

And my ancestors were, obviously, white Spanish and French people.

Never understood all the bullshiat school spirit for no reason in this country. Always found it gross.

Do good. Make a holistically sound and thriveable environment/community for all humans.

What the names are of the people running it, who they are descended from and what symbols they use are hilariously irrelevant. And, personally, I have only contempt for "tradition" in government or any other oragnization.

Do TEN MILLION times better for EVERY PERSON HERE, or fall apart and be shoved aside correctly as waste. The end.

The thing is, bad things can happen to a nation that fall somewhere short of total collapse. The US has already had one civil war. We've had major acts of hatred like The Trail of Tears, the Japanese internment camps, and widespread lynchings. We've had people rounded up and imprisoned in the McCarthy era, we've had people experimented on in Tuskegee and with things like MKULTRA. We've directly and indirectly overthrown several governments, some of which were functional republics. The US survived all of these, and eventually moved on from... most of them (how's that government we installed in Iran working out?...), but each and every one of them was an ugly time for the country.

Just because the US will likely SURVIVE what Trump has done to it doesn't mean the next few years aren't going to kill many people, and suck for most of the rest. We've already lost ~200,000 people to inaction on the 'rona, a number which is almost certain to pass 500k, and has a depressingly good chance of getting up to 7 figures before a vaccine is widely distributed. Mexicans are getting loaded into internment camps, and they're ones employing eugenics. This is happening now, not in some hypothetical dystopia of 5 years from now. People in high ranking positions have already told people to stock up on weapons, and Trump trying to use Y'all Queda to become a dictator is absolutely a possibility we have to be prepared for. (Do I think it'll work? No. Will it be a bloody mess for a month or two? Yes.) Full-scale civil war is unlikely (though not entirely impossible), and Y'all Queda actually becoming an ongoing terrorist group, with cells, that takes years to stamp out, is absolutely a real possibility. There's also the more mundane - but potentially just as deadly - issues like the exponentially increasing costs of health care that will soon make treatment for basically anything available only for the rich.

So yeah, the chances that there will still be a USA in 2030 are probably 99%. The more we do to prevent shiat from going downhill in the next several months, however, the more we can do to ensure that it's one anyone actually wants to live in.

Me an the ol lady arn't sweating this too much. Everything changes and it might just be the time for the USA. It is a Buddhism idea but there is no solid thing but change. Every thing is in flux.  The USA has been assholes through the world for ever. We have done good and not good for years. So grab onto your asses and hope for the best for the change to come. Change happens and it is happening now.

Please, by all means. No really I mean it. Vote however you see fit, as long as you vote.

I once heard a saying that goes "people end up with the leaders they deserve."

The longer I live and more I see, the more true I notice this is. To which I expect a few replies of "but what about the people that don't deserve it?"

To which I defer an infamous quote by the morally questionable historical botanist Mr. Thomas Jefferson.

By almost every relevant measurement of quality-of-life, the overwhelming majority of Americans are better off today than they would have been 50 years ago.

Are we perfect? Fark no.

Are we as uniformly better off as we should be? Absolutely not.

Is our form of democracy messy and chaotic? You bet.

Since Americans are generally ignorant of history they lack historical context, we can easily be convinced that this country is going to hell and will never get better.

But, it will. We're in a cyclical down time, a terrible patch. Our biggest problems don't usually resolve themselves conveniently in a single generational time cycle, but over time there's no doubt that the trend line is up and will, over time, continue to be.

My mother thinks everything going on is literally "the wrath of Satan." She's dead serious. Toys in the attic...
I feel like she's refusing to acknowledge the REAL problems. When I tried to explain climate change to her, she completely dismissed it and went on about Satan. It's kind of a slap in the face because it feels like she's trivialuzing the suffering of Black people, hurricane victims, wildfire victims... everyone.
But hey, she's a Boomer in rural Idaho.

Is it raining yet?

It's not really prescient to predict the downfall of something. Everything dies eventually. Spending its entire life predicting its death doesn't mean you were right when it finally dies.

This is not the first time in American history that journalists, writers and intellectuals in general have cast a gloomy light about the future.

Problem here is putting journalists and intellectuals in the same paragraph.  There is no journalism anymore.  It's mainly clickbait sensationalism and nobodies on social media spouting hate and outrage.  Fark is a good example but it's relatively unknown.  Twitter is shiatshow central.

Dear Jerk: Others have this more eloquently than me but - Liberalism built such a robust nation that it has taken 40 years of conservative backlash to bring it to the edge of destruction.

The root to all this is economic.  Most societal upheavals are economic in nature.

America is now well into the post-industrial phase of capitalism.   You think all those manufacturing jobs that used to pay a living wage and benefits went off shore?  Nope.  https://time.com/5876604/machines-jobs-coronavirus/ It's only going to get worse from here on out.

The people in control of capital and resources don't need hordes of unskilled and semi-skilled worker drones to produce the surpluses that they desire.  That's one of the reasons you see a complete disconnect between Main St and Wall St.   Main St is taking it in the nutz now, while Wall St soars ever higher.

America, China, India...all in the same boat. Millions upon millions of people are soon to be made totally redundant, no need for them whatsoever.  It's a global phenomenon.

There are a couple of ways that come to mind that could be employed to deal with the problems caused by AI and automation:  (1) Share the wealth.  Things like basic universal income and universal access to health care.  (2) The truly evolved decide to keep it all for themselves.  Looks like it's gonna the latter option here in US Murica.   The 1% have decided they are keeping it all, and they've done a masterful job of setting the superfluous rubes at each others throats.
