Because of this headline I looked up the best selling consoles ever.  The original DS was less than a million from taking the top spot from the PS2.  I never would have guessed that the Switch has sold more than the Xbox One.

What about the 2DS?

As someone who can do VR and 3D movies without any issues, the 3D really messed with me. The first time I experienced it was with a fellow passenger on the bus. After she got off the bus, out of nowhere I suddenly got hit with a severe case of nausea. I didn't throw up, but didn't feel good either. I concluded it was due to the 3D effect.

A few years later I tried it at a Target when they were still in Canada, and though I didn't get sick like the last time, I could feel it stressing my eyes a bit. While walking home I foolishly walked into a curb instead of over it, nearly falling face first into the sidewalk.

While it may be possible that correlation does not mean causation, I still think they should have added a warning about operating heavy machinery and driving after use.

Is it true that some of the Switch games (e.g. Animal Crossing) are super-unfriendly to having multiple people use the same console?

Fine on Tv with HDMI cable, but on the go much better to have two on a local.

I've never played animal crossing.  I guess I'll get it for my sons birthday in a couple weeks.
We mostly play Mario party, M cart, DC LEGO villians, & lego city undercover.

Animal Crossing technically works fine with two people... there's just nothing for two people to do.

No, I mean like everyone sharing one console to play Pokémon or Animal Crossing or any game that's got a single player component and progress to save. I'd read something about it restricting those to one active game at a time but that seems so off-putting I have a hard time believing it. I know it does multiplayer OK.

I now realize you might now mean two players at the same time. Yes, Animal Crossing is a pain in the ass because you can only have one world per console and everyone has to share it. But that's unique to Animal Crossing and isn't true for other Switch games.

My kids can't play split-screen Minecraft on the switch because they want you to pay for a Nintendo account for each player, which I'm not doing.

I don't have a Nintendo account and I play Minecraft split screen with my kids, even when not logged into the free Microsoft account. Minecraft doesn't work with the solo controllers turned to the side... not enough sticks, so you need two pair.

I keep that one for the transferring of pokemon from the original GB cartridges.

Also, the DS/3DS family has one of the largest back catalogs there is. It really is the sweet spot for portable gaming. And despite the 3DS being pseudo region locked, DS games are region free on the 3DS. Pick up new-to-me games all the time when travelling or at flea markets.

Sad nothing because of stuff like this right here. People forget just how rough the 3DS' first year was. It very nearly was the Virtual Boy 2.0 but they managed to keep it limping along with shiat like the ambassador program until it finally got some decent titles under its belt.

One of the best bargains for a handheld system too, the 2DS was.  You could (still can?) get a new one with New Super Mario Bros. 2 or Mario Kart 7 for $80.

I think that had less to do with the 3d and more to do with the handheld market bring devoured by smartphones. I think it's a testament to Nintendo's resolve to make the 3ds work that it did as well as it did.

Unlike the PS Vita, which will probably be the last dedicated handheld console made. The market is dead.

The 3DS is still a good handheld. There are a lot of games around on cartridge and despite being discontinued the 3DS eshop is still open. It also has a much better UI than the Switch with far more built-in functionality. I still use mine and my original Phat DS regularly.

There's still plenty of time to pick up a Switch. You can always get one later.

Animal Crossing is clearly designed to encourage two people who want to play together to each buy their own Switch and copy of the game. That's the only way that both players can each go through the opening stages and can visit each other's individual islands.

Try again. Nintendo accounts are free. They have a paid addon that gives you free games and online play but it's not required.

Don't feel bad, I just bought a brand new New 2DS XL from Amazon yesterday, hours before I read this article. My son's Old 2DS non-XL had just died, but he loved all the games...and the "New" versions play a few fancier games like Minecraft where the older consoles didn't.

I see the DS as having a very "long tail" and will still be popular for another several years, even if Nintendo officially stopped making them.

The backwards compatibility and multiplayer are great, but the sheer availability of sub-$10 used games is a big selling point for us vs the Switch. With 2 kids, I'm just glad to have them both on the same platform sharing a few games.

I've just been paranoid that it wasn't going to ship from Nintendo and prices immediately jumped after they shut down and Walmart pulled the brand new 2DSs from their website.  They had refurb switched available when I ordered so I'm just being whiny. But I do want to wait for the switch because the internets thinks there will be a 2021 switch update.

If there's enough of a cult following, they may end up getting a premium for them. Usually canceling something implies that it's obsolete, but sometimes the market disagrees with that sentiment -- Nintendo is really just trying to push the Switch Lite here.

I just regret I didn't jump on the numerous recent Walmart deals at $99. I paid $135 at Amazon, and this morning they were $170 or so.

I was just about to buy a refurb for $100, but figured an extra $35 for Mario Kart 7 and full warranty was worth it. My daughter has a refurb (regular) 2DS and it's been great for almost 2 years, no issues. Except the stylus was a different color than the body. But the Nintendo e-shop refurbs are top notch, I wouldn't hesitate to buy there agani.

At least we got a really good HD re-release of Perfect Dark on the XB360 (I think it might be on the XBone, as well?).

But yeah, between ownership of the game and ownership of the Bond license, Goldeneye's unlikely to come back and it definitely won't come back to a Nintendo console.
