Gateway was our standard in the late 90s and early 00s. The devices were OK, but our customer rep was amazing. Any shipping delays and we'd call Peggy, who would light a fire under someone and the thing would magically appear the next morning. Any hassles on the support side and we'd call Peggy, who would often issue a full replacement.

She once sent me a brand-new laptop to replace a nearly three year-old model when we were having delays replacing a part. When the left hand finally met up with the right hand on the support side, we ended up with the now-fixed original laptop, a refurbished version of the same model sent by the support team, and the new laptop sent by Peggy. I called her and asked whether and how she wanted us to return things and she said, "just keep everything. It's going to cost us more just trying to figure out how to process this than the stuff is worth."

We switched to Dell around 2004, and the field IT staff nearly mutinied because it meant we were losing Peggy. Nearly twenty years later, those of us who were around back then still share Peggy stories. She is still my gold standard for customer service. Absolutely stellar.

Years ago, many many years ago, a friend bought a gateway PC. They essentially bought the top spec machine they made, they just said yes to every option the salesman offered. Faster processor? Yes please. Biggest RAM? Of course. Biggest hard drive? Sign me up. And so on.
Cost them just over £3000 UK price.
Exactly a year later a mutual friend bought a gateway. They effectively couldn't buy a machine as low speced as the first one. The very cheapest spec machine Gateway now offered was a faster machine than the highest spec one the year before. And it now cost £1800 even though it was higher spec in every area.

Those days are long gone. I'm typing this on a i7-4770 powered PC from 2013 and not even vaguely thinking about upgrading.

/This reminded me about Time Computers, a chain of PC shops in the UK. Their machines were shiat. If you had to buy one, buy an ex display model. Their display models were the same technical specs as the ones they shipped to customers, but made with top quality brand components. Their display models were well made, the ones you got were made with the cheapest brand components they could find.

Good customer service goes a long way.  Many people, especially those who are repeat buyers (the type a business should want, like you and whatever company you worked for) are willing to pay a little extra if they know there's little chance of there being any problems and if there are they will be fixed quickly with little hassle.

I am actually using a Gateway PC right now: an old i5-650 from their DX line. It's my parents computer and as they are elderly and I have to spend 8,10 or more hours a day at their house to help with my dad, I've basically taken it over. Today it had to do a Windows update that took over 2 hours to install. I wonder if an i7-8xx would work in it (both are LGA 1156 where as the i7 were LGA 1366).

A Gateway was my first PC back in 2000. The "build your own" started at their base model, "upgraded" to 64mb memory, 566 MHZ processor, 7.9 Gig hard drive, and the dreaded Windows ME.  Ah the good ol' days...
