Chip Issue is the name of the bad guy in my Ratchet and Clank fanfic.

And today is when they should be announcing prices and release dates. Might have to reconsider pre-ordering this one or not.

Video game consoles should be big business this holiday season with the weather getting cold and covid still on the scene. Don't screw it up, Sony.

You never get a console day one unless you are a moron. Wait a year for the game selection to be more than a few turds and one or two big name failures

I don't know why the link wont work. Here's Sony's response:

"While we do not release details related to manufacturing, the information provided by Bloomberg is false. We have not changed the production number for PlayStation 5 since the start of mass production."

Does Sony manufacture their own SOC, or do they farm it out to someone like TMSC?

The PS5 is fully compatible with PS4 games. So this is more of an upgrade than a replacement.

Price was just announced at $499. Looks like the "chip shortage" did nothing to the price.

It's... a pretty huge upgrade.  The CPU is quite a bit newer and faster, the GPU can do almost 2.5x as many FLOPs (compared to PS4 Pro; more than 5x what the non-Pro PS4 can do), twice the RAM, and the SSD is orders of magnitude faster than the PS4's HDD.  It will be interesting to see what the SSD does to game sizes, given that assets had to be duplicated in most current-generation games to minimize drive seek time.

I learned the hard way to not buy a console from the first round of production.  That's when they learn about a lot of the remaining major errors so the second round is a lot better and if its hardware issues, you can't just download an upgrade.  It's not like you'll be missing out on too much right away anyways.

Also:  The PS5 will launch on November 12 for $499.99

I generally pick up all the big consoles day one. The only one that has ever burned me was X360 with red ring. However this scheme worked A LOT better when Block Buster was a thing in my smallish town. $14.99/mo for the game pass to check out any game in their store, no extra fees or limits. I could take it home play it - decide it was shiat and take it back to check out a different game. Or I could keep it for any number of days I wanted. It was the greatest thing they never advertised in my area and gave me access to indulge in with games I'd otherwise never throw the money down on. Sadly my PS4 and XB1 never saw that kind of love and my played titles stayed rather minimal.

I watched the presser and I was impressed far more than I was disappointed. Mainly, the new Souls game and FNoF were the ones that held no interest to me at all. I hate FPS games like C.O.D. but even that Black Ops game looked mildly entertaining. Everything else was "GIMME!!!!"  Add in the PS 4/PS 4 Pro games available as part of their new collection and I think I will be getting it on Day 1 (or shortly after that).

As for issues with consoles....I really haven't had any aside from the old PS1 "flip" trick when the CD starts to go and my "Gamestop certified" used PS3 had a disc read issue (fixed by slightly tilting the console back a bit). Other than that, no RROD, no YLOD, no nothing really. Day 1 or Day 759, they still work fine for me. YMMV

Its backwards compatible, so, shrug.

Not that I care since I am master race.

Sure. The point is, you're not starting over in your games library when you buy a PS5 so it's not like the PS5 will be collecting dust for a while waiting for new PS5 games to come out.

So there's no need to "wait for a year for the game selection to be more than a few turds".

Great, next thing we'll hear is that Half-Life 3 has been delayed.

Sign me up for the wait a year until everyone else troubleshoots the manufacturing issues.  Thanks!

Oh I was impressed with most of it as well. The only thing that really bothered me was some weird combat clipping issues in that Demon's Souls play through footage.

I'm not much of a console gamer these days. My wife is in love with console gaming, however, I still enjoy it from time to time. I just have a hard time dropping money on a game I might be interested in only to find out I really don't like it. That's what was great about that Blockbuster pass I mentioned. ;) I was just happy to play really anything and it introduced me to some titles that wouldn't have been on my radar.
