I read that as "he went on the rooftops and [separately, also] said "everything's going to be good" [and both of those were bad but politically astute things].

In fairness, Churchill did go on the rooftop during the Blitz to monitor the situation.  Drove his aides crazy.

He never once said "everything's going to be good" or anything like it. And the idea that Trump is trying to compare himself with the greatest crisis leader of the 20th Century (and one of the greats in history) is f*cking offensive.

Churchill instilled a sense of urgency and devotion to country not by lying to the public but by telling them they were literally in the fight of their lives.

He told the Germans to get back, get back, get back to where they once belonged.

The Flim Flam Führer has most of Churchill's nasty qualities -- child of privilege, racist as all hell -- and none of his heroic ones.

Trump went on to describe the unfair treatment Hitler and his nazis received from Allied forces.

"They were really badly misunderstood and you know, everyone is saying that. I don't know. Maybe they were? I think history will see them differently very soon."

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

Churchill *did* say that. Can you imagine the Flim Flam Führer saying such a thing?

Sure, I remember Churchill's speech very well:
"We shall deny to the end. We shall mock our allies, we shall fight to pollute the seas and oceans, we shall tweet with undeserved confidence and growing egos, we shall defend Nazis, whatever the cost may be. We shall gather mask-less on the beaches, we shall pack into restaurants, we shall harass Black people in the fields and in the streets, we shall whine and equivocate; we shall never surrender... to common sense."

Calming people during a panic is one thing.

Lying to them about how serious the crisis is .....well, that's just lying.

Notice how in the first scenario Churchill didn't tell folks that they didn't need to go into the bunkers when the sirens sounded because "most people aren't going to be hit by a falling bomb"

Neither did he hold large rallies at night with lots of lights

Detailed accounts in "The Splendid and the Vile" by Erik Larson.

And even if Trump is correct (he is not) the appropriate analogy would be him going into the Covid wards without any PPE or any kind of mask and broadcasting on NPR that everything was looking good and was going to be OK.

Unfortunately the cultists are just too stupid ... it's true ... no other way to put it ... to understand.

Would have to read (hard), would have to read history (harder), would have to think logically (apparently impossible).

Right? It started out 4+ years ago with "Fark headline with outrageous Trump quote" and I'd be "That's just some hyperbolic take on what he said... oh. Nope, that's a direct word for word quote. Holy shiat!" Now I'm credulous about just about any alleged Trump quote no matter how horrible. I don't like it, I still try and confirm it, but now as I'm poking around to confirm I'm more shocked when it isn't true

Some examples from an actual Churchill speech:

"The whole question of home defense against invasion is, of course, powerfully affected by the fact that we have for the time being in this Island incomparably more powerful military forces than we have ever had at any moment in this war or the last. But this will not continue. We shall not be content with a defensive war. We have our duty to our Ally."

In other words, "This blitzkrieg thing, it's all just a political hoax."

"I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. "

Or, what he obviously meant was "The Nazis will just go away one day, like magic"

He'd definitely have told people they didn't have to shut out their lights or go to bomb shelters when the air raid sirens went off. I'm pretty sure he hired his son in law to divert supplies from hospitals. Yep. Churchill with WW2 and Trump with COVID-19, pretty much exaclty the same response...

What Secretary Wolf called the Battle of Portland is over. I expect that the Battle of America is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of white Christian dominance. Upon it depends our own privileged life, and the long continuity of our peculiar oppressions and hypocrisy. The whole fury and might of the liberals must very soon be turned on us. Biden knows that he will have to break us in this bubble or lose the race. If we can stand up to him, all America may be under our control and the life of the world may move backwards, in storm-tossed, sun-baked lands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and pretended to care for, will sink into the abyss of a new age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the Trump Administration, under my progeny, lasts for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was our darkest hour."

Some of Churchill's most famous speeches basically boiled down to 'if we go down, we'll go down fighting'.

That's not cuddling people. He admits the possibility of defeat. He also makes an impassioned case for success being within their reach. But Churchill never hid the worst case scenario from his people. He also spoke in complete coherent sentences.

Remember when the stupid trash claimed that Obama destroyed our special relationship with the UK by moving a Churchill bust out of the oval office? Imagine how the Brits are gonna feel when they learn that the GOP has been comparing Trump to Churchill.

It's always kind of "funny" to me how Churchill  literally gave a speech about using the same methods that the Japanese used and people are inspired, but the Japanese actually do it ("we will fight them on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds ...") and people want to act like they were insane and part of a death cult.

Certainly not. It would mean to admit that there's something he knows not. And that would lead to a brain meltdown (another one) because trump knows everything. He knows more than we all know together about a given subject. It is funny to see how that cretin is twisting and turning when he uses excuses like "We didn't know how severe the gina virus was back then" while simultaneously trying to keep a straight face when bragging about how he knows more about virology than the ten top virologists combined.
