I had a Beagle when I was a kid. Picked her out of thousands. Well, it seemed like there were thousands.

It was the late 60's in West Virginia where my Dad was stationed at a Radar Base. There was a holler with a hunter who bred dogs.

We go into this weird place, down a long, dark (because very tree-shaded) dirt track to a like...compound? Basically falling down wooden shacks all around. I only remember one person, the old hunter, but there were so many many many dogs, and about a thousand puppies, all running around this big area beaten down to dirt, like a parade ground almost, in the center of the ring of buildings.

I had a ton of fun playing and running around with all the puppies, but I finally picked one little girl (looked like the first puppy out the door in the video above) who would stay on my lap and let me hold her, as well as playing with me by us running around together. We named her BeBe after my parent's Beagle they had before I was born, who was best friends with a neighbor's duck.

She was a great dog, but unfortunately racist :( which upset my parents when we found out, but I was too young to think it was anything but funny the way she always barked like crazy at the sanitation men. She thought they were stealing our garbage and would go crazy. Then when my parents had their Black friends over for dinner and cards, the dog also went crazy and had to be locked up in the garage whenever they were over which always embarrassed my parents.

Anyway, Beagles make great pets but boy do they love to bark in general (not just at Black people - I think that was just my dog).
