"You understand that they're going to have to kill me, and unfortunately, I think that's where this is going," Caputo also said. Perhaps self-evidently, he added that his "mental health has definitely failed."

It's time for him to go spend more time with his family and look for other opportunities in the public and private sectors. A stint in the Kanye West Memorial Psychiatric Ward would also not be out of line.

And it's entirely possible.  Biden has to win by 3+ points to overcome Trump's electoral college advantage.

Why wait? The American century was the 20th century. It's an empire well and truly on the wane now. Unlike a century ago, when America was on her way to assembling the factories and workforces who pumped out extroardinary manufacturing through WW2 and into the fifties, now it's just about the wealthy getting wealthier and everybody else getting farked. Now the whole story since Reagan has been tax cuts for billionaires, crushing unions, low wages and now Trump. These are just a few of the indicators that America's best days are decades behind her.

It happens. The fiftteenth century belonged to Portugal. The sixteenth to Spain. The seventeenth to the Dutch. The eighteenth to France. The nineteenth to Britain. And the twentieth to the US. Britain's dominance in terms of land which fell under the category of being part of the British empire came in 1935, so people thought it was still good, but any modern analysis shows that Empire was broke having been declining for decades in reality. Same for the US today.

It's actually possible for the US to be a technologically advanced, socially progressive modern nation which provides a high standard of living for its citizens even if we are no longer the single dominant empire on the planet.

Unfortunately our present leadership either doesn't realize that, or they're actively trying to prevent that outcome from ever occurring.

I don't think so. US wages have stagnated in real terms for the last thirty years. Thirty years. All of the profits which have been derived from the massive "technological advancement" you refer to have gone straight to bosses and shareholders, none to real wage growth.

That's just not the case where I live or in much of the rest of the western world.

The "high standard" of living you refer to certainly doesn't include health care, American health care is massively inefficient because patients are getting gouged by for-profit scumbags every step of the way when they have health issues. Add in racist law and order policies (not that Australia is any better on that front, but our shiat is just racist not for-profit which at least makes it easier to solve in theory) and education policies which make tertiary education prohibitively expensive for many and I'm not seeing the "high standard" to which you refer.

Plus there's, you know, getting blown away by an arsehole with an AR15 if you're seeing a movie or a country music concert. Nobody needs that.

Maybe I should have inserted a "theoretically " in there at the beginning somewhere.  Since, y'know, it could possibly happen, if we didn't live in the bad timeline where we can't have nice things.

Madness? This Kakistocracy is the leading detriment to American Society, a second term would realize the supporters all their own fears. The Rights they claim to being removed from anyone else will happen under the Trumponian Kakistocracy. These people are, and will be, voting to limit their Right to vote, they are actively voting for much less freedom. This is ultimately the beginning of the End. If US governance by the People fully ends the US will become a self administered Dictatorial Monarchy sharing Fascist Idealisms to rule over the People. Our Constitution Laws will be rapidly reduced and eliminated to the point of resembling the DPRK political "leadership", to where the People can only work and live for a false, self imposed Monarchy.

As Historians and Philosophers debate the falls of governments, the people ignore all the warning signs, content with the apathy of their own failures to even protect themselves.

Education is the key and path to an enlightened society, the lack there of only breeds the willful ignorance we have today. False narratives to sway a belief practice that will only enslave those to their own end. One day they will awake, and see their prison, but will not understand they themselves had built that prison.

Yup.  Oh yeah, you may get one or two "True Patriots" going off the wall because they drank too much of the koolaid, but I've met enough of the type to know they're mostly too chicken shiat to do more than yell at the TV *if* Biden wins.

I have voted in every presidential election, and almost every mid term election, ever since I turned eighteen.

I think Aussie_as may be right, that the United States' time of Empire may definitely be in decline.   I have thought this for some time.  And even wondered on it when I was young and being raised on the ideology that America is the greatest nation ever.  Because I knew enough about world history to know that every Empire has its rise and fall.  And since that's the case, when will that happened to my country?   I just didn't think I would live to see it.

I also think that Smirky the Wonder Chimp may be correct. We are at a moment of decision, where we have the choice to become a great nation even if we are no longer the only global superpower.   I believe this election is that moment.

This election will be the choice between electing Trump and continuing down a terrifying and dangerous path, or electing Biden and hopefully righting the ship long enough to convince Americans that this path is a better one.

If Trump gets reelected, it will prove to me that this country has chosen its path and there is no turning back.

And if that happens, it will be the last election in which I will ever vote.

I said earlier that you can tell which states trump will carry by those who decide to play college football this fall. The big ten just voted to move up the start of the season to October 23, right before the election.
Michigan, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin.... you get the picture.

A second trump term is the final signal to the rest of the world that America is finished. The rest of us will need to continue to shift away from American focused policy and economics. This has already been happening Trump has only accelerated the decline
/no empire lasts forever.

And the people in this country will barely notice.  Not because the rest of the world won't move on without us, but that they just won't care.

It will indeed be the last election you vote in.  It will be the last election any of us will ever vote in.

Trump idolizes dictators who hold sham elections to garner 100% of the vote.  If he wins this time, and somehow lives until 2024 (stroke, cardiac event, etc), that's what we'll get in 2024.

The british gave away their empire and we unionized ours into unprofitability.

tfresh: The british gave away their empire and we unionized ours into unprofitability.

The US forced Britain to give away the empire and they were in no position to disagree. It was the right thing.

I completely disagree with your second assertion. Henry Ford paid his production workforce well. It was lousy work and he needed to hang onto talent. It wasn't unionising which made it unprofitable. It was ever increasing layers of executives and shareholders demanding dividends, combined with massive tax cuts across everyone but favouring massively the wealthy.

Don't blame unions, blame the 1 per cent.
