....I mean technically it's true. It's edible, and it's alcohol.

Obviously you shouldn't consume hand sanitizer because its alcohol is not the same alcohol you'd find in beer or wine or rum. But consuming that alcohol is within the realm of physical possibility.

Alcohol.

Wouldn't be surprised if it had significant quantities of isopropanol.

Some hand sanitizer (especially during pandemic) has regular ethanol, the same stuff in the alcohol we drink.    They add other stuff like hyrdogen peroxide though.

The question is WHY did they add that label in the first place?

I don't get it. Does isopropanol have something to do with ED?

Any molecule with a hydroxyl OH group is technically an alcohol if you're brave enough. Big fan of tert-butanol myself.

Found a label in one of the recall notices.  It's Ethyl Alcohol 70%.  That's the normal drinky kind, but who knows what else might be in there (aloe gel obviously).

In particular, if something is labelled "For External Use Only" it absolutely is not safe to ingest.  If it ain't food grade it's allowed to contain all sorts of nasties that don't even need to be on the label.

alcoholics will drink anything if they feel they have to.

It still doesn't mean they should receive inadequate medical treatment, and if their clothes have shiat all over them so they can't wear them out the door, be given only scrubs to wear without even the slippy socks for someone's feet but to have them left bare.

That's a whole nother level of being "GOMER"ed". jess sayin. It happens.

Yup.  Things can be bad. Hospitals are in a difficult spot. They can't become clothing and shoe suppliers, or there would be even more homeless in the ED every day with "I'm too drunk, I need a bed, and by the way, I need new clothes". The no socks thing, I've never seen.
What I have seen a lot, is people pushed out the door because they refused a free ride to the shelter, where they have all that stuff.

My favorite Cisco quote applies to both the shiatty wine and the shiatty networking company:
Tales of Cisco-induced semi-psychotic fits are common.  Often, people on a Cisco binge end up curled into a fetal ball, shuddering and muttering paranoid rants.  Nudity and violence may well be involved too.

"Ingesting hand sanitizer, which is intended for topical use, may result in alcohol toxicity," a risk statement from the company reads. "Symptoms of alcohol toxicity may range from lack of coordination, slowed or slurred speech, drowsiness to coma, which can be fatal."

So... Getting drunk.

Pffft. Hand sanitizer. Bleach. Lightweights.

An artsman and an engineer once found a gallon can
Said the artsman match me drink for drink, let's see if you're a man
They drank three drinks, the artsman died, his face had gone quite green
But the engineer drank on and said "It's only gasoline!"

It not that you can't drink it. Assuming it's made with pure vitamin ethanol. Which a lot of it is.

You can't label it as 'for drinking' without paying the sin tax. Dirty sinners.

It's no less pure than the alcohol in $50/bottle vodka. The difference between the two is advertising budget.

A lot of it still does, because there's an isopropyl alcohol shortage. You'll find it labeled in the US as "ethyl alcohol", "ethanol", or just "alcohol." If it uses isopropyl, it'll say "isopropyl alcohol" or rarely "isopropanol."

The peroxide is added to basically make sure the sanitizer is clean when it gets bottled. By the time it reaches the customer it's basically gone. Glycerol is what they add to make it gooey. The rest is cosmetic.

I did see one of those seltzer things advertising organic alcohol and immediately wanted someone to show me a non-organic alcohol.

You need to ingest a decent amount of isopropanol to kill you. You might be confusing it with the much more toxic methanol. And besides, you make it seem like skin contact with isopropanol is a major problem. I still don't like it in hand sanitizer because we're using so much of it now and ethanol is non-toxic.

have you seen someone given one night at a motel on a weekend then with no referrals have the police all ready to arrest the former patient upon checkout time? fark that shiat. Give someone a chance to get their clothes together and rest up from being an inpatient in the first place a day or two. Then give the person a ride to the red cross set up for fire evacuees..but nope. It was probably easier to just keep someone separate from whatever help they could actually get and make them a problem instead.

When that happens, it takes an act of god if anyone is going to get help in this world.

don't drink. it's bad for ya, mmkay? but don't be a dick to homeless alkies either.

This is a Christian nation. That why we have rules, laws, and people in black robes judging people. Why is this so hard to understand?

We Ate the Necco Wafers: The question is WHY did they add that label in the first place?

Sounds like it was to differentiate it from hand sanitizers that use alcohols like methanol that are much more toxic. It seems to me it's a worthwhile distinction to make, since Americans drink a lot of hand sanitizer. The US has probably had something like 100 people die and 100 people blinded by the methanol variety (extrapolating from CDC figures on two states). But "edible" is not a good way to say that. And it would be more helpful for the really toxic hand sanitizers to have blaring warning labels, "THIS IS THE KIND THAT WILL BLIND YOU". I think the FDA is kind of ultimately at fault here. Allowing "alcohol" labels on products but not indicating whether it's edible (in the sense that it will just make you druk) or highly toxic has inevitably created consumer confusion.
