That time over a year ago when Microsoft posted a blog titled "The perils of using Internet Explorer as your default browser" should have been your cue to switch away from it.

You can, and should, remove Internet Explorer from your Windows install.

My mom's dirt cheap laptop came bundled with a then-new browser called "MS Edge".  Every attempt to access the internet said "sorry, Edge crashed".  Used Explorer to download Chrome: problem solved.  Edge might work now (especially now that it doesn't use MS code...), but I avoid it on principle.

/mom liked my aunt's chromebook so much she went and bought a win10 laptop
//parents, go figure
///oddly enough, she had a job writing FORTRAN with punchcards before she had me.  Think Dilbert's mom and you have a pretty good idea of her.

The old school way was to simply use Knoppix (linux booted off a cd).  If you really want to be safe, do the same thing with Linux, except you

gunzip ~/backups/vpc.gz | dd of=/mount/your_partition

every time then surf away on VPC.  The biggest benefit for Linux is that your Linux system is *small*, while win10 easily expands to 100GB just for the OS drive, and copying a new file every time wipes any corruption you never notice.

No IE here, whew.  Good thing my unpatched Firefox install from 5 years ago is still safe for porn browsing!

wait until someone hacks "admiral" and all those news sites who require you to allow their adfarm network to view their site are suddenly the largest malware distributors in the history of the internet...

I'll admit, there are a whole lot of games in Flash that I love, but which are just going to disappear entirely once Flash does -- the developers haven't been making games in a decade, so there's no chance of getting a re-release as we've seen with, most recently, the Henry Stickmin Collection.

But if that's the price of getting rid of a piece of software that's about as secure as leaving the key in your front door so you can't lose it... cue appropriate Tombstone clip here.

If Edge was JUST a browser, I'd use it. But it's not--it modifies Windows, your settings, your privacy, everything it can get it hands on.

Who is still clicking browser ads?!

AngryDragon: Who is still clicking browser ads?!

Who is still buying them? This is like idiot stores who send out mailers maybe hoping for a .01% customer hit. I hate trawling spam for business. Local grocery stores, auto sales, coupon books, restaurants... I despise flyers, banner ads, floating videos... I actively refuse to go to these stores, and I've told some of them in person to cut it out. I won't be a customer as long as they do it.

If I want you, I will seek you out. When I'm looking for you, make yourself easy to find. Other than that, fark off and leave me be.

AngryDragon: Who is still clicking browser ads?!

You don't have to click on them. Most ads include a script that runs when the content is loaded by the browser. The script could do anything. This is why it's so impotrant and useful to have tools like ad blocking and granular script controls.

seriously ^^^this. my brothers were both like "whaaaaa?! you have to deal with *that*??!?" seeing me pop open scriptsafe and having to allow maybe 3-4 reasonable subdomains simply to make some basic news website function.

me: *points to where scriptsafe lists ~ 20 kajillion 3rd-party namespaces I am not allowing for that same site* "what, you mean you jackasses want to let all of that nonsense run? on your machine?"

yeah, I've been playing dasshutsu/tesshi-e style games for like 15 years or something - so many of the old classic developers simply let go of their websites, and those who haven't, those old games are all still flash-only.

at one point, using the debug/standalone/offline/?AIR? adobe executable would let you paste in local file urls or internet urls to the direct .swf, which often worked. but a lot of developers had already built in anti-relinking/reframing/etc. measures, so it wasn't 100%. (but man was that tool nice you could zoom a flash game into fullscreen)

some eventually tried on html5, which was generally crap. more recently, most have been going pure unity/webgl (lol remember the days when unity ran *inside* flash?) - esp. after they realize that they don't even have to make browser webgl versions of their games but ship iOS/spamdroid only, because sweet sweet in-game-ads/in-game/purchases.

even some of my old favorites such as tristore, nakayubi, nicolet, can be slightly aggressive about ads/"stamps"/"coins" but I've never once spent actual-monies to play.

some of the still-present older developers (trying to remember who... sanpoman? rin-no-gogo? neutral/neutralx, room's room, caffee ichima, jammsworks, neat escape, madogiwa, mipp, ...) have been slowly converting their old flash games to webgl, which is quite admirable!

oh speaking of which, Rusty Lake did a gorgeous remake of their old Samsara. no ads, no purchases, free on iOS, android, Steam (mac+pc) - lovely art, wonderful atmospheric sound. it's too late, I think, to enter the contest  (I did! but didn't win a tshirt lol!) after solving the secret level, but the level is still there.
