(Twitter)   Trump compares his downplaying the coronavirus to Churchill's actions during WWII. You remember when Churchill famously said, "Turn off those air raid sirens; we don't want people to panic," right?   (twitter.com) divider line

"People are saying that's not even the Luftwaffe, that it's just normal air traffic for this time of year, so I don't know. It could be anything, right? I will say this, if we didn't have so many anti-aircraft guns we might not be having this problem - if you can call it that."

I'm stopped all incoming bombing raids from Iceland. The Labour Party said it was xenophobic, but things would have been a lot worse if I hadn't done it.

What Trump did is more akin to when FDR said, "The only thing we have to fear is the information that's necessary to properly respond to a crisis." At least that is what I think FDR said; I may have gotten that quote slightly wrong.

I'd compare it to the old fire-in-a-theater situation.

So imagining I'm a theater manager, and during a show I discover a fire has started in the building.  I obviously don't want to run around screaming "FIRE! FIRE! FORGET THE WOMAN AND CHILDREN, GET OUT OR WE'RE DOOMED! DOOOOOOoooooOOOOMED!" - that could incite a panic.

I also don't want to interrupt the show and calmly say something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, we apologize for the interruption, but we need everyone to please exit the theater through the marked exits in an orderly fashion immediately as there is a concern about the building. Please follow our ushers out now, we will explain outside." - that could obviously incite a much large panic.

No, what I want to do is ignore it. When people start saying they smell or see smoke, I tell them it's just a new special effect and not to worry, just keep watching the show, it will just magically disappear. If someone see the flames and wants to use a fire extinguisher, I'll yell at them about how awful the stuff that comes out of extinguishers is. I'll try to humiliate anyone that gets up and tries to leave on their own. I will not allow any of my employees to call the fire department.

That is how you make sure people don't panic.
That is leadership.

People come up to me all the time with tears in their eyes and say 'sir, Winston Churchill is looking down from heaven smiling today'.

He probably shares many traits with Churchill, such as racial views, but leadership isn't one of them.

I had to go see how many people actually died in the Blitz.

Trump is like 6 Churchills. So great.

Wow, all those bombs dropped and only 32000 dead? Those bombs were losers and suckers. And so were the 32,000.

CheatCommando: BigNumber12: CheatCommando: CheatCommando: Aussie_As: Australian here. We actually agree that Trump shares elements of Churchill's competency. I mean his incompetency. We have a public holiday each year to honour it.

https://www.history.com/news/winston-churchills-world-war-disaster

So yeah, Trump's handling of pretty well everything and Churchill farking up an entire battle in WW1 share some similarities.

Very few actually. After farking up Gallipoli, Churchhill resigned his position and volunteered for the trenches. He appears to of been wanting to at least except some responsibility for failure and more importantly to learn from it. A lot of his reluctance to launch a cross channel invasion came from his understanding of what could go wrong in a large amphibious operation.

Yay auto correct and Fark's unwillingness to have an edit function Unlike more advanced software that's been updated since 1999.

Most of us are against an Edit function. Why give morons the ability to go back and revise history after they've been mocked relentlessly for a post?

A lot of systems get around that by having an edit log that lets you see the edits that were made. But they were written by competent programmers, not drunk college kids.

Drunk college kids will work for alcohol, and Drew's site revenues are down dramatically these days.

FDR Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself 1933 Inaugural Address
Youtube 3cS17za6pVk

I remember FDR downplaying the effects of the Great Depression: "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."

No need to fear starvation and hunger, loss of your home and land, no job, no income, no hope, no future.

zappaisfrank: I'm seeing Trumpers comparing this to FDR's "Fireside Chats", also....bullshiat.

An act of war is something we cannot really control. We simply have to try to mitigate the damage and keep spirits up for morale sake.

We CAN control our response to a viral outbreak and subsequent pandemic.

Other countries had leaders who told the truth from the start and the people didn't panic, they responded, and as a result had far fewer deaths.

Trump blew it, pure and simple, and the excuses his apologists are making for him is just gross and disgusting.

Nonsense!  The closest analogy is when Jesus walked out onto the water in a storm and told the fishermen not to worry, there are only a few waves, and this thing will all be over by Easter.
