(Twitter)   Trump compares his downplaying the coronavirus to Churchill's actions during WWII. You remember when Churchill famously said, "Turn off those air raid sirens; we don't want people to panic," right?   (twitter.com) divider line

I mean a race war is a kind of a war, right?

Historians make those comparisons. When you say it about yourself it's pathetic.

It's only 15 or so Messerschmitts, soon it will be zero. All the reports of explosions and deaths are a hoax.

More like Churchill the cat in Pet Semetary.
"Sometimes, dead is better."

Trump says it'll be gone like a miracle

Churchill said he had nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.

People come up to me all the time with tears in their eyes and say 'sir, Winston Churchill is looking down from heaven smiling today'.

He probably shares many traits with Churchill, such as racial views, but leadership isn't one of them.

Ahh yes, I remember when Churchill told them to turn the lights on and open back up the economy because that was more important then a few people dying from bombs.

If Churchill said "The Germans aren't bombing us - the media and my political opponents just want you to believe that so I'll look bad" then, when the bodies started piling up, said "the bombing will stop soon, just like that", then yeah, they'd be the same.

I'd compare it to the old fire-in-a-theater situation.

So imagining I'm a theater manager, and during a show I discover a fire has started in the building.  I obviously don't want to run around screaming "FIRE! FIRE! FORGET THE WOMAN AND CHILDREN, GET OUT OR WE'RE DOOMED! DOOOOOOoooooOOOOMED!" - that could incite a panic.

I also don't want to interrupt the show and calmly say something like "Ladies and Gentlemen, we apologize for the interruption, but we need everyone to please exit the theater through the marked exits in an orderly fashion immediately as there is a concern about the building. Please follow our ushers out now, we will explain outside." - that could obviously incite a much large panic.

No, what I want to do is ignore it. When people start saying they smell or see smoke, I tell them it's just a new special effect and not to worry, just keep watching the show, it will just magically disappear. If someone see the flames and wants to use a fire extinguisher, I'll yell at them about how awful the stuff that comes out of extinguishers is. I'll try to humiliate anyone that gets up and tries to leave on their own. I will not allow any of my employees to call the fire department.

That is how you make sure people don't panic.
That is leadership.

I'm stopped all incoming bombing raids from Iceland. The Labour Party said it was xenophobic, but things would have been a lot worse if I hadn't done it.

He has no business comparing himself to Winston Churchill. W.C. learned from his mistakes, understood what was needed in a time of crisis and was resolute in a time of peril.

We've got merchant ships, more merchant ships than anybody...that's so true. Did you know that I banned travel from Germany in 1940? No one else could have done that.

2020-09-11 8:30:37 AM
What Trump did is more akin to when FDR said, "The only thing we have to fear is the information that's necessary to properly respond to a crisis." At least that is what I think FDR said; I may have gotten that quote slightly wrong.

We're working on a secret weapon that will defeat the Germans immediately. It will be ready right before the election and once I am re-elected I will use it.

Worth noting that a real Nazi is lying about how to respond to Nazis.

2020-09-11 8:31:17 AM
Churchill didnt deny the Blitz was occurring and didnt tell his citizens to ignore the bombed out buildings that used to be their neighbors' homes.

2020-09-11 8:32:16 AM
he's just like a fatter, much dumber, inarticulate, ineffective, incompetent, incontinent, irresponsible, and extremely dishonest Churchill.

2020-09-11 8:33:03 AM
The White House also maintained that tear-gassing protesters and clergy in Black Lives Matter Plaza on June 1 was Churchillian. Apparently, raping 13 year old girls and putting children in cages to die while begging for water are also rather Churchillian. Basically, anything the Manchurian Cantaloupe does is Churchillian.

I mean, he might have a point about the V-2 attacks, which were called "gas main explosions" and covered up for the first couple months, but I don't think he's got the historical knowledge base to understand that.

And Churchill was extremely clear about the risks of the Battle of Britain/Blitz, and didn't sugarcoat anything, and I would in fact argue that he overdramatized the risks to keep morale up.

'Our fight is hard. It will also be long ' Winston Churchill, 18 March 1931
Something no Trump can claim

I think we're past that now.  We can not be sure at this point if they've done anything to manipulate the numbers.  I've always heard the phrase "trust but verify".  What the hell can we do to verify anything?

2020-09-11 8:35:37 AM
I'm seeing Trumpers comparing this to FDR's "Fireside Chats", also....bullshiat.

An act of war is something we cannot really control. We simply have to try to mitigate the damage and keep spirits up for morale sake.

We CAN control our response to a viral outbreak and subsequent pandemic.

Other countries had leaders who told the truth from the start and the people didn't panic, they responded, and as a result had far fewer deaths.

Trump blew it, pure and simple, and the excuses his apologists are making for him is just gross and disgusting.

"People are saying that's not even the Luftwaffe, that it's just normal air traffic for this time of year, so I don't know. It could be anything, right? I will say this, if we didn't have so many anti-aircraft guns we might not be having this problem - if you can call it that."

Keeping people calm is important, but so is talking straight to people.  Fox News tried to say "...but Obama" because Obama tweeted in March that shiat was serious, but ended the tweet with "remain calm".

The problem isn't that Trump wanted to keep people calm.  It's that he intentionally misinformed people and refused to even take government action to address it.

Jake Havechek: Churchill never kissed Stalin's ass.

Well no, because Churchill knew they'd be the enemy once the Nazis were taken care of. And he wasn't wrong because the Cold War may not have been overly violent by its main participants, but they dragged a lot of other countries down because of it.

You could have shortened that to "The problem is Trump." That is pretty much universally true, although "the problem is McConnell" and the "The problem is conservatives" are also nearly universally true.

It's not like anyone at a Trump rally knows who Churchill was. They probably thought dingus said "church on the hill" and they all started cheering.
