It's a stupid movie.  Spoilers to follow, as if that's possible with the "reimagined" Disney trend:

Donnie Yen: "Mulan, you're a disgrace!  Bring me my sword so I may remove her head!"
Subordinate solders:  "Um....we believe in Mulan."
Donnie Yen:  "Mulan, you will lead the army into battle to save the Emperor!

Here's the funny part: Disney has been running away from capitalism for years. They went all-in on "world citizen" stuff, not to mention the whole "woke" silliness.

But now that the economy is in trouble in a way that specifically targets entertainment companies, they're losing money by the truckload. And the investors who actually own the company are stepping in and informing the various middle and upper management folks in charge of Disney that the wokeness is going to stop, immediately. Quite a few of the top people are getting quietly shoved out the door, especially the ones who managed to screw up the Star Wars franchise.

That also means that a bunch of that Chinese "cooperation" is going away too, since the massive sales they were promised from the Chinese market haven't materialized in anywhere near the amounts they expected.

Fark China, and fark everyone who defends maintaining business as usual with them.

It would be disastrous to pull all business out of there immediately, but we should be moving toward pulling out.  And we should cease to place more business there.

The whole idea that free market participation would lead to a more liberal country in general?  That's shot to hell.  They're now using our mania for cheap labor to fund themselves while becoming even more horrific.  It should matter.  They're doing evil things to people and we give them money while we're trying to fight things that (while horrible and worthy of fighting) aren't half as bad.  At some point we have to take an honest look at ourselves

Hollywood needs to understand there is no financial future in China. What they want and what the rest of the world wants is in conflict. Disney can keep trying to split the baby like they did with this movie, but that's just pissing off both sides.

Disney has helped destroy the very environment that allowed a work like Star Wars to flourish in the first place.

https://tv.avclub.com/the-telecommunications-act-of-1996-gave-us-shiatty-cell-1798250823

FTA: "Now, companies like Disney can own TV networks, film studios -- something that McChesney notes was illegal until the '90s -- magazines, newspapers, radio stations, amusement parks, sports teams, book publishing houses, and more. That kind of conglomeration can make things incredibly murky for most consumers, as, for instance, the cast of Once Upon A Time, a show on ABC -- a network owned by Disney -- helps promote Zootopia -- a movie made by Disney and starring one of the cast members of Once, Ginnifer Goodwin -- as they get snapped by paparazzi at Disneyland, and so on, and so on, and so on."

Kowtowing to the Chinese government has made movies demonstrably worse. Writers can no longer tell the stories they want to tell, because some minor tidbit *might* cause Chinese authorities to censor the movie.

The quality of our entertainment is therefore dumbed down to appease authoritarian regimes, and we, the audience in all the democratic countries of the world, are given only whatever the lowest common denominator appeases Chinese government censors.

And then the movie gets censored anyway.

Lesson movie studios may take from this: trying to appease the Chicoms so you can get access to their markets may backfire for reasons entirely out of the studio's control. Best not to do that.

This is a win for freedom... thank's to a paranoid anti-freedom government.

Behind the scenes politics aside, the criticism I've heard that ruins it for me is that Mulan went from the tomboy that didn't fit in doing what's right despite the patriarchy, to the village wunderkind martial artist that is surrounded by men chanting "you go girl".

In China, you would be sent off for re-education and not return.

In Russia, don't drink the tea.

In the US, you get legions of followers, a gofundme or Patreon page, and be popular to at least 35% of the population. This applies equally to both sides.

And you think they are all basically the same?

So, ever since IMDB stopped allowing discussion boards, I tend to go to 4chan /tv/ a bit, because where else can I learn I should hate myself and commit violence against myself for liking a movie? But that seems to be news from a youtuber that apparently is consistently wrong about everything they "leak" about Disney, or anything. Definitely take with a boulder of salt, but even the crowd that would sadly cheer over that kind of news doesn't seem to believe it.

Amusingly, the only positive review I've heard from anyone, either actual critic or random friend who paid to see the movie, was that if you pretend you never saw the original it's a workable mid-to-low-tier wire-fu flick with all of the usual problems, like the entire plot being lost in translation.

... that's right, setting a bar low enough for this movie to clear it required the one reviewer to pretend it was a badly-translated action movie originally in Cantonese.

I haven't seen it yet so maybe it's secretly super good, worth thirty farking bucks plus a subscription fee, and I'm truly missing out, but... jesus christ, the general reaction to this thing redefines "damning with faint praise".

Disney became the powerhouse it is today because they doubled down on capitalism, not moved away from it. If you don't think the Mouse is the pinnacle of American-style capitalism - right up there with Amazon - you're mistaken.

Yes, a bunch of people mocking Xi with pooh-bear is the big story of the century that south park broke and the regular media won't talk about.

Media that had an article about it per the first couple pages of google returns:
The Guardian.
The BBC
NYT
CNBC
CBS
ABC
CNN
Fox

Now, I assume you aren't actually that concerned with winnie the pooh, but rather the overarching story of Xi and censorship in general.  I assure you, the media has devoted quite a bit of time to that. I don't even know what the point of your last sentence was, other than some weird swipe at liberals.
