Cops didn't want to get wet and were OK letting him drown.

8 On Your Side found jail records that show Brownlow had a number of priors including an arrest by Pinellas Park police earlier this year for aggravated battery, reckless driving, and fleeing officers.

Sounds like a real loss to humanity.

One of my father's longtime friends used to be a cop in Vancouver. Had a guy run away and jump into a lake. He sent his dog in after him. Imagine getting chomped on by a K9 while trying to swim. Come to think of it maybe it's stories like that that don't cast cops in a good light.

That has to be the dumbest thing to say.  You're going to jump in open water at night after a criminal who is going to resist your help and cause you to drown too.

Practically every pond, canal, and water channel in Florida has gators.

Surprised they recovered the body.

I'm all for holding cops accountable when they commit crimes.  Please cite the specific Florida (or Federal) statute that you think the cops violated.

Until video is provided that backs up the claim that he broke away from them and jumped in the water on his own volition, I'm going to believe they were just saving money and suspicion by not having to spin a tale of him shooting himself while cuffed in the back seat of the squad car.

There hopefully other options.  Jumping in the water is always the last option in lifesaving.  Also I have no idea how long it takes to remove a bulletproof vest and other heavy gear a cop is likely wearing.

I bet you'd be the first to jump in after the guy who could easily tangle you up and drown you with himself  ;-)

Pretty easy to wish criminal charges on others, from comfortably there in your home, for shiat that isn't illegal and that you wouldn't do either - isn't it?

Detectives said while being escorted to the van in handcuffs, Brownlow broke free from the officer and ran toward Boca Ciega Bay and jumped into the water. The police department is right on the water.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, which is assisting with the death investigation, could not say if there was video of the incident.

There had better be video. It's right outside of the station where there are 4 security cameras.

Most likely, he dove in head first into the shallow water along the seawall, hit his head, and was knocked unconscious. You can get a street view of the parking lot.

If you don't panic.  And your odds are much better if you have experience in it.  And if you're not wearing clothes that will weigh you down and sink you.

I did a lot of stupid things as a kid trying to be an escape artist.  This was the stupidest thing of them all I did.  I barely survived.

You think you can get by without using your hands.  But it's damn difficult.

ROFLMAO. That one sounds more b.s. than this one.
Jesus Christ. People will just believe what ever the cops say. Meanwhile every single suspect is lying. Never mind we have later found DNA proving their innocence.
And despite the fact we now have information we can compare absolutely guilty to DNA cleared people and see how they both act no one is bothered to put together a study.
Seems like we don't even want to begin to find out how innocent people act.
Clearly we don't want facts to harm or stupid preconceived stupidity.

I don't give a fark. That's their JOB is to protect and serve. Including that "perp". They should all be charged with a crime or fired at the very least. I don't care if it's a rapist or a wifebeater, no man deserves to die like that.

There is NO difference between those cops and those people that laughed and filmed watching a man drown in a canal, and they had to go to court to be told it wasn't their fault the man died when it was.

If cops are killing people like that, who polices THEM?

I don't know the details, but if you were an armed assailant running from the cops I don't think they farked around, especially in the 70's and 80's. Also, these stories tend to grow over the years.

look, it's certainly possible the cops threw him in the bay, although i'm not sure what they'd gain from that (other than REALLY bad 2020 publicity) since they were literally at the point of walking him into the station.

BUT it's certainly possible Florida Man (who may or may not have been intoxicated and/or very aggressive) freaked out, ran, and jumped in. that's a very Florida Man thing to actually do, i live here i promise it happens. usually they live to tell about it:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/florida-man-swim-jumps-lake-fleeing-police-arrested/story?id=60596146

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/florida-man-news-police-escape-abraham-duarte-a8526146.html

https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/florida-man-swim-police-exposing-article-1.2621438

if the latter is the real scenario, i don't fault the cops for not immediately following him in.

a good friend of mine was once escorting a young man who was having a psychotic break to a town with a hospital, by boat. this was in peru, and the river was the only way to get there. the sick dude jumped overboard, and my friend -at the time a very fit 27, year old who is 6'2' and had been both a competitive runner and swimmer in college- was very nearly drowned by the younger guy who was about 5'7" and skinny as hell. they were finally dragged back into the boat by 2 other dudes after my friend got close enough. the sick dude also bit and scratched him while they were in the water. the sick guy then had to be restrained -and held down- for another hour to get to town.

if the cuffed guy was desperate enough to jump in the bay he was also desperate enough to drag other people to the bottom with him. deciding not to risk your own drowning is not the same as cold blooded execution kira.
