They can change it, but it succeeded in its purpose - generating buzz.

It's French cinema.

Young girls exploring their sexuality is practically a genre over there.

Ummm, what does her skin color have to do with it? Would it somehow have been better for a white director to get the death threats?

Yeah, it seems like this movie was like... mildly dodgy at worst, in that it potentially dropped the ball on saying that something bad was bad and accidentally looked like it was glorifying it.  Like... from the reviews and buzz from its festival showings and people who've seen it, it's not a super great movie but it's well within the error bars of the normal level of pretentious faux-edginess in coming-of-age stories (meaning actually super farking mild by France's traditional borderline-pedophile-approving standards).

Basically nothing whatsoever like what Netflix was promoting it as (a good thing in this case).  This is a misrepresentation catastrophic enough that a lawsuit against the distributor might be appropriate, they all but intentionally solicited death threats against the makers of the film here with their advertising.

// That said, obviously I haven't personally seen it, so maybe everyone who has has been lying and it actually is secretly super bad or something.  Seems unlikely, but sure.

Seems like this movie isn't doing that though, and folks who saw it are saying it actually brings up the over-sexualization of kids in the movie itself.

Death threats are just the internet's way of saying "hi" though. You can post a picture of an empty sofa and get death threats for it. Not saying that's right, just saying, the internet is content generated by our particular species - and our species is..... "of uneven quality" to put it politely.

Used to be more of a thing in America, too. But that was long before nudity under 18 was porn or topless toddlers was obscene. Americans don't like reality in thier literature and movies either.

Let's be realistic here, people. It's well understood that Hollywood and other film making elites, hand in hand with the political left and various billionaire philanthropists, are part of long running global satanic blood ritual cult that eats the still warm adrenal glands of the child sex slaves they are trafficking. That this film maker denies any involvement in making this poster is just more evidence that she's part of this whole sinister organization.

It isn't necessarily a matter of reality in entertainment. A coming of age sex story about a 15 year old female is generally okish as long as the actress is over 18. The problem with the French versions of such films is that they use 15 year old actresses. Are 15 year olds having sex? Yes. Can a 15 year old consent to appear nude on screen? I think no.

It could have been an outside agency that created the poster. I remember when I worked for The Modesto Bee, we had outsourced advertising to a New Delhi company. For some reason, they thought Cool Hand Luke's restaurant was a gay nightclub. We got a proof back that had a bunch of shirtless young dudes standing around in provocative poses. Come have a good time at Cool Hand Luke's! Luckily our ad section editors caught it before it ran, but printouts sure made it around the water cooler network as an example of why not to outsource.
