Trek fans (and the general TV viewing audience) should realise that this is HUGE for your transgendered, non-binary friends and neighbors: to have a character that looks like them and is being portrayed as a multi-dimensional, sympathetic character that adds to the overall story of the TV show.

It's how we (gay, cis males) felt when gay and lesbian characters started appearing in TV shows as part of the fabric of the show and not some "tragic character".

And lets not forget how Discovery showed the rich and diverse spectrum of the queer community. All the way from effeminate gay white guy to effeminate gay black guy.

Which is why I have not seen any of this show.  But I heard this was changing this fall.

I'll say the same thing about transgendered folk being on Discovery that I did about them using the same bathroom as me.

If they want to be knee deep in shiat and surrounded by the fumes of unbearable stink, they're more than welcome to it.

Also, I'm sorry.

Of course it does.

Discovery isn't Star Trek, but not because of trans actors/characters. Star Trek welcomes diversity and so do it's fans.

No, Discovery isn't Star Trek because it's farking stupid.

Is it still boring and inane ?   If so, could care less.

Discovery sucks ass.  Great special effects, but the stories are crap, the motivations are crap, the deux ex machina are crap, most of the characters are crap.

I suffered through season 1, but gave up after the third ep of season 2 (the one where they resurrected the dead guy via the mushroom planet).

....Keeping in mind that this is just IMHO, I didn't see anything particularly effeminate about (assuming we're talking about) Stamets and Culber.  Stamets especially - I knew so many tech officers like him in the USAF, flat out brilliant and precise to the point of OCD prissiness.  Culber seemed like a typical healer - smart as a whip, and caring, which can come across as feminine but is often anything but.  In any event, I didn't see either one as anything but characters who happen to be gay.

I was in stitches when I saw the USS Enterprise ejecting an unending stream of thousands upon thousands of shuttle crafts like their shuttle bay had some sort of TARDIS thing going on. Science! FARK YEAH SCIENCE! And that's the power of MATH!

Forget coherent story, interesting plot, great characters (especially the lead character), smart script with non palgiarized ideas (I believe the lawsuit is still ongoing unless the guy settled). Increasing the Woke is the way to go.

If you look at Stamets and Culber and think "effeminate", you may want to have you masculinity checked...

Yeah, but at least that was a story structure that made sense - despite being a silly concept. Discovery's writers don't seem to be capable for making their stories make sense.

Or the time that the Enterprise went to the planet of all tribal black stereotypes, the gorgeous white security officer got kidnapped, then she started to have feelings for her kidnapper? Or the time when the ship's therapist was space-raped and gave birth to freaky growing-fast-kid that was "exploring the universe"? Or the time when the robot downloaded a civilization to his brain and the ship was transforming into a representation of their city? Or the time that the station's bartender was trans-gendered into a female stereotype for a zany scheme?

and:

That time when the cis male NX01 chief engineer got pregnant, and it was hand-waved away when the "medical officer" said that the female contribution is the only one that forms babby? Or the entire premise of 'Threshold'? Or 'Spock's Brain'?

Honestly we could go on and on recounting the many failures that the ST writers inflicted upon it's viewers. Yes, Discovery has had some failures, but to imagine that previous series are "better" (by your own subjective measure of quality) simply because they are not Discovery, is disingenuous at best.

My only problem w/ Discovery is is that story seems rushed.

Twice, two different characters say "Some day, before I die, I'm going to [blank]" and then IN THE VERY NEXT EPISODE they do that.

The dipshiat MRAs at Midnight's Edge will be sure to have a three and a half video round-table about how Lt. Klinefelter is the death of Star Trek  any second now.

Meanwhile, I'm going to watch and enjoy the show, because I like the realistic Stamets and Culber relationship and the slightly chubby but very competent ensign and mirror universe spy captain and first officer Very Tall Anxiety Man. And hopefully more Tig Notaro. Those are all interesting characters and I want to know what's up with them. I like the ongoing involvement of the Federation's espionage agents.

I think the Klingon stuff is boring and I generally don't care what's happening with Michael. That's fine. I thought Ferengi were boring and I never cared what happened to Riker, too.

Another example of Discovery being "rushed" [single episode spoiler]

The robot woman on the bridge, she's hardly had more than a single line in any one episode;

We start a show following her, we finally give her a back story, explain why she has the robot body, who her friends are, what her life is like, and then before the end of that episode, we have to shove her out an airlock.

it seems rushed.

gilgigamesh: I'm all for it, but would be much happier of they added coherent storytelling to the cast.

This.

I loved Discovery overall, and especially seeing the Enterprise and Pike show up. Rebecca Romijn also looks RIDICULOUSLY hot as Number One, and needs a damn musical episode for Gilbert and Sullivan :P

Michael's character is fine, but FFS they railroaded the entire Spock family connection to the point of idiocy. I get wanting to have a connection to TOS, but complete reconning was seriously overboard. Also, the Short Treks of the "Girl with the Stars" was adorable as hell, and had some serious Moana vibes :P

But why do they both have to be all warm and caring and shiat?

Why not insert ass kicker/annoying jerk/horndog/ect character and hey, they just happen to be non binary/transgender?

You'll be happy to know they're doing the Pike/Spock show.

(I had thought they had spent a lot of money on sets and costumes for only a few episodes.)

Riker was actually badass in the last couple scenes in "Picard".

Couldn't really get into ST:D. I guess it's because the characters all suck. I might try it again someday. Do they use the eff word like they do in "Picard"? Hey, we can use curse words now!

Because portraying LGBT people as "horndogs and jerks etc" was how they were usually portrayed in the 20th century.

That's not inclusion.

The homosexual rape scene in the 1984 production of Dune is a prime example.
