Only 1 in 20?  From what I've seen it's way more than that.  The hippies may have sold out, but they kept their stashes.

1in 20 they aren't even trying. up that number easy, and if they had a good hook up most citizen citizen homes would be burning wood.

Not my parents.  Lived in Colorado for several years.  Moved back and Mom said, "I wish I'd tried it."  So I gave her some edibles which she promptly "lost" in her refrigerator.  This woman's so anal-retentive, when she flushes the toilet, everything goes back up her butt.  She "found" them months later.  I won't give her any more.

And this article is stupid.  More states are legalizing it.  It's much more available.  So more people are trying it?  Thanks for that hard-hitting investigative research, UPI.  Keep writing those column-inches and getting your clicks.

Any plant who's leaf is that aesthetically pleasing to the eye should've been legal to all right out of the gate. Seriously. My corneas want to cream over what they just saw from the thumbnail

The boomers are the ones who came up with all the awesome strains we have available today. Growing good weed is both science and art. Can't be learned in any school. The boomers figured it out on their own.

I'm one of the younger boomers and I have numerous health issues. I talked to my doctor and he thinks it's a good idea for me, but he does not give scripts for that. I am now looking for a "Pot Doctor so I can get some. Olive in Florida, so I would find one pretty quickly.

Are we fostering the consumption of a gateway drug on Fark? Great, might as well promote alcohol or methamphetamines. Why is it we as a nation keep stepping on our own dicks with or lust of these illicit drugs? We'll never advance to that super-society with an anchor like that attached to our hip.

Because personal freedom > society benefit*.
Otherwise alcohol would have been banned for its health, psychological and monetary damage.
Same goes for cigarettes once it was realized just how bad they were.
I predict hard drugs will be decriminalized soon after marijuana because "it's my body!"

Boomers smoking pot for 50 years seems like a pretty good argument for pot not really being a "gateway" drug.

Yes, alcohol promotion would be something new to this site.

After 50 years of enjoying my bud, I look forward to the next 20 to the same.
For me, it has seemed to eliminate any need for legal drugs, as the cannabis has amazing cure all effects,
and wonderful side effects.

All hail the mighty bud!!!

Given the chronic shortage of money in the Social Security trust fund and the known problems that weed use causes in people's cardiovascular systems, this trend sounds like a good thing to me from the perspective of keeping that fund afloat.

Yeah. I suspect a lot of "Marijuana use is on the rise among older americans" is just "Marjuana users getting older".

Won't someone think of the children!

Weed has been legal long enough, there is plenty of research that disproves all of your pearl clutching fears. But you won't read it.

Just go back to church and talk to your Jesus about your superiority. It helps a lot of other people that have your same mind set.

Not a 'gateway' drug....  been hitting the bowl for 45 years..  don't drink and never have had an interest in trying anything else.  Been offered lots of stuff... nada.. I'll pass.  If you move on to the heavy stuff, you wanted that anyway.. don't blame weed for that.

I'll read any research that you say disproves the idea that weed is a gateway if you would like to cite it here.

In the meantime, I'll leave this article here for you:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3659424/

"Marijuana (MJ) remains the most widely used illicit drug in the United States, with an estimated 14.4 million past month users; 72.8% of current illicit drug users report using MJ, and 53.3% report that it is the only drug they use (SAMHSA, 2008)."

That is, a bit over a quarter of all weed users report using another illicit drug as well.  So pardon me if I'm not ready to drop those pearls just yet.

As long as we're posting anecdotes here, my own experience is that weed use doesn't always precede the use of the harder stuff, but that it often does, and that the best way to ensure that you don't go on to using heroin or crank or cocaine is to not start with weed in the first place.

Here's a tragic case of a now deceased buddy of mine who started with weed (indeed, I used it with him when we were younger), went on to use meth, and stabbed a man to death while under the influence of the latter substance.

Given that I'm in my mid 30's and I'm still almost always by far the youngest person in any dispensary I've popped into in PDX, I'm going to go ahead and say that 1-in-20 is a...modest understatement.

Sorry, what?   That's not how that works.  You're the one making the assertion, it's your responsibility to provide proof of that assertion.

So... 75% of weer users don't use anything else... and that proves that somehow it is a gateway drug?

Thank you for disproving your own point.

His choice.   Always know what the consequences of your actions can and usually will be..  if you are willing to accept those consequences, go for it.  I understood the consequences of heavy drugs, and decided not to go there.   Too much to lose.

i have experimented with a bunch of drugs; acid, meth, mdma all long before i touched the devil's lettuce.  zero interest in the others at this point in my life, i have shiat to do, like sit on this here couch and watch nature documentaries.  damn nature, you scary.  i've never harmed anyone or anything (other than a bag of cookies) under the influence or sober.

i guess i was lucky.
