Oops, they did it again.

PerpetualPeristalsis: Given the cops I have seen, and the ones in the news from time to time, that seems like a vanishingly small pool of people from whom to choose.

Nope- there are loads of Americans stupidly eager to harass anyone "different". They aren't a major problem most of the time, because they're generally scattered around the country in enclaves of farkwits amid a much larger population of people who can count above ten with shoes on. A lot of these weak-minded people will gravitate toward authoritarian jobs such as CBP, which tends to concentrate their numbers. Replace the people making policy decisions (without any effective oversight by Congress) with Deranged shiatweasels, and the thick-witted CBP agents are essentially given carte blanche to indulge in all of their racist fantasies without consequences.

Any country has always had a small percentage of its members who are incapable of functioning in a civilized society. They're usually easy to ignore, because they tend to be just smart enough to realize bad things will happen if they act on their racist fantasies or even speak those fantasies aloud. For a variety of bad reasons, racist shiatweasels in the US have been allowed to concentrate their stupidityness in law-enforcement agencies all over the country.

And the Derpublicans have been encouraging these racist-farkwits-with-badges to give in to their darkest impulses in a vain attempt to prevent the "master race" from losing its grip on power. This November, we have to get rid of every politician giving tacit support to these neobarbarians, and they need to be overwhelmingly rejected by the voters. If the result is fairly close, the possibility of political violence becomes much more likely.

When discussing CBP (in particular) and the Department of Homie Scrutiny (in general), remember it was CBP who separated kids from their families, locked them up in cages, and "lost" a lot of those kids. Remember how many people detained by CBP- including children- have died in their custody. We forgot that many of our fellow Americans actively dislike the promise of freedom and equality this country supposedly represented, and we allowed these deeply stupid people to commit atrocities without consequences. We allowed this shiat to happen, and we are all permanently stained by that fact.

apocryphaandmyth: hubiestubert:

Y'all are going to make the slip past 50% a real humdinger, aren't you? Just got to get that last little bit of dickishness in now before the electorate and the representation takes a decided turn.

That's where the hope is, they (we) ARE slipping under 50%.  I've substitute taught enough classes to see the pattern:  if one group is a majority, the majority plays with the majority, and everyone else has their back against the wall.  If no group is a majority, everyone plays with everyone, for the most part.

Another 20 years and we're gonna be fine, if we make it past "white power last gasp".

Ummmmm, no.

Or to put it more bluntly NO NO NO.

I am 54 years old and I have been hearing "it's just the old folks and all we have to do is outlive racists" since 1976.

It's not going away by itself.

the high frequency of border crossings is the issue.  not her skin color.  traveling across the border to work out at the gym requires a blue passport as it is not part of her duties as a Foreign Service officer.  she was abusing her office and it was raising suspicions.

it's clear that many in this thread have never traveled on a diplomatic passport.

Before living here, I spent a childhood overseas as the daughter of a Foreign Service Officer, and I traveled on a diplomatic passport.

you were traveling for official business (which includes limited return visits to the US while stationed abroad), the woman who wrote the article, by her own admission, using her diplomatic passport and status for personal travel.   that's a red flag, she could be trying to use her status to smuggle.  it's a real problem, ask the US military.

HairBolus: I wonder if the CBP troglodytes got off on harassing a young pretty black woman who was better educated than them with a better job.

It does strike me that a lot of this is, in addition to racism, about class. I remember reading an minority AV tech describing coming back from a shoot with a vehicle full of gear and the border guy emptied the vehicle from what I remember, because he was angry that the television guy had a better job than him.

That aside, if she played her cards right she could have me.

I'm not a person of color, but this makes me so angry. I can't imagine the stress she was under, but I just want to line up all of these racist a-holes and give them some of their own treatment.

At least a diplomat has the ability to expose this shiat in the newspaper, and hopefully shame the crap out of some people up the chain of command.
The other thousands of people who are treated the same or worse all day, every day basically have zero recourse.
