Seriously, folks, what CAN black people do?  Can't BBQ. Can't go shopping. Can't skateboard. Can't bike. Can't attend faculty events. Can't walk down streets. Can't drive at night. Or the day. Or in "those neighborhoods" or "these neighborhoods" either. Can't teach. Can't attend classes.

Seems like the only thing that folks WILL let black folks do is work at Popeye's or play sports. And even then, they'd apparently best be home right after the game.

Y'all are going to make the slip past 50% a real humdinger, aren't you? Just got to get that last little bit of dickishness in now before the electorate and the representation takes a decided turn.

I got stopped by some immigration aholes while travelling back on a official US government passport. They wanted to know if I had ever been deported.

Consider the train of thought here... I sneaked into he US, got deported, came back, got a government job, passed the screening & background check and now these aholes were gonna catch me on my way back from representing the government of the United States at an international conference. They tried to claim that I had a common Hispanic last name and that this "was a problem". So I asked if they were also stopping a lot of Jones and Smiths who got "flagged" by the system but they would not comment on that for some reason.

That's where the hope is, they (we) ARE slipping under 50%.  I've substitute taught enough classes to see the pattern:  if one group is a majority, the majority plays with the majority, and everyone else has their back against the wall.  If no group is a majority, everyone plays with everyone, for the most part.

My sweet summer children. White people aren't 50 percent in Latin America and they've been running shiat just fine, maintaining inherently racist policing, and other institutions. South Africa did even more with a smaller proportion of whites to other races.

Considering the US has a larger black population than Mexico, unless she has a massive West Indies accent then it should be obvious she's from the US. Regardless, diplomatic passport? The State Department outranks these shiatheads.

They should be showing deference to State Department diplomats and if they don't, they should be fired with extreme prejudice. This is pure, 100% racism.

And the right wing nut jobs still wonder why people are burning shiat down.

"Just stay in your place and play the football."

"Wull, why does black people get scholarships and affirmative action jobs over white people? Shouldn't people hire the most qualified?"

Yes. And because of the white racists that's not what's been happening for over a hundred years, so now we need to make laws to even it out.

"But that's the real racism!"

I wonder if the CBP troglodytes got off on harassing a young pretty black woman who was better educated than them with a better job.

Aw come on, they were just flirting or joking. Can't she  take a joke?

If CBP has to pull out some number of crossers for secondary inspections can't they have fun doing it? Harassing fat old women isn't nearly as fun.

South Africa explicitly prohibited black people to vote in much of the country, and only allowed property owners to vote in other parts, greatly skewing the voting base to whites only.

/republicans are trying their best with gerrymandering and voter disenfranchising, but in the end it will get harder and harder for them to skew things their way thanks to changing demographics. Reality has a liberal bias.

I will second this experience. Not old enough to have done it since the 80's, but similarly bad experiences with US customs agents. The only place I've ever felt they were being rude/belligerent was the US. I've been detained by customs in two other countries and never felt they were trying to intimidate me or acting unprofessionally . I was touring in punk rock bands back then but was smart enough to not look the part at customs. However, on one landing in Dallas from the UK, they went through our baggage and found some posters for our gigs in Berlin and Prague. Got the glove treatment on that one.
After that, we wised up and sent all of our promo and keepsakes ahead, and told the customs guys we were a country band that played George Jones covers.

I once got stripped to my boxers in the front if about three hundred people while I was getting on a plane to come home in Frankfurt. That was 2014.
The reason they gave me was that I was traveling too lightly with just a carry on, and it was "suspicious ". I was only on a three week tour, and I HATE waiting for luggage and HATE waiting for other guys in the group to collect their shiat. Some people feel like they have to bring a ton of stuff with them, and if the airline loses their stuff then the poor guy is chasing his stuff the whole tour. Instead, I travel lightly and buy stuff if I need it.
I was in my mid fifties then, so I didn't care if I was naked, and I'm sure it wasn't much of a treat for everyone else.

There's only one way they could realistically stop it, but anyone who thinks the far right isn't headed down that road full speed is either lying or has been in a coma for the last few years.

White girl hippie here, with facial piercings and visible tattoos, and I can tell you that post 9/11, the amount of times I got "randomly" chosen to have my bags fully emptied and examined and/or be subjected to a full-body patdown was way too high to actually be random. I took a cross-country trip 4 months after 9/11, from and then back to New Jersey, and received no less than 7 "random" examinations between both the initial and return flight. In the year following that, I got "randomly" searched at the gate while on a layover when I had less than 45 minutes between flights. I live in Portland, Oregon now and there are way too many freaks like me living here to effectively screen all of us, so now all I have to worry about is getting shot because someone mistook my umbrella for a swordcane. No, really, that actually happened, too. Got confronted by a dude in a full body-armor shoving a goddamn M4 in my face, on a return flight from Georgia back in 2014. I haven't flown since, and I can't imagine that between the budget cuts, shutdowns and reduced hiring standards, the job performance of these security a-holes has somehow massively improved.

I can still recall the palpable frustration of having security tell me "this is for your own safety" while having my bags emptied and x-rayed for the third time in the space of an hour. Or how a "mistake in the computer" meant that when I got pulled over for any traffic infraction between 2001 and 2007, I had a 50% chance of having my car searched for drugs, and I have never been charged with any drug offences. I know people who have never had their cars searched in 40 years, but for me, I had mine searched 5 times in a 6 year period.

Being an asshole seems to be a job requirement at CBP. And it appears to be a worldwide requirement. Canadian CBP is just as bad. And I'm white.

It's part of the job function.  Officer Smiley isn't going to trigger the guilty into nervous action the way Douchey McDouchebag will.

Officer smiley does better if they know what their doing. If I'm an asshole and your defensive, it could be you're nervous...or you could just think I'm an asshole. If I'm nice and chatty and you're nervous there's a disconnect there. Why are you nervous when I'm just as friendly as can be?

Officer Smiley does not want to actually mess with a real terrorist or drug lord. That shiats dangerous and there will be tons of paperwork.

Messing with a young black women is fun.

Target Builder: hubiestubert: Y'all are going to make the slip past 50% a real humdinger, aren't you? Just got to get that last little bit of dickishness in now before the electorate and the representation takes a decided turn.

The way the far right is ramping up I don't think they're planning on letting the slip past 50% happen.

There's only one way they could realistically stop it, but anyone who thinks the far right isn't headed down that road full speed is either lying or has been in a coma for the last few years.

They can't really stop it.

Donnie has been their best bet to slow it down, with him basically screwing the Census this go around. And maybe I need some fresh tinfoil for my chapeau, but I do kind of feel that is the reason for the GOP locking step with him. Not fear of losing the support of the Idiot Brigade for their own races, or losing their easily grifted cash offerings, but really, to preserve the basis for redistricting for another decade. Once the census numbers start rolling in, it's going to make gerrymandering all the harder. Plus, there's the whole, "actual numbers of people of various creeds and ethnicities" to call upon to pierce the more blatant lies that the GOP has used these last several years to excuse themselves for treating citizens of color like garbage.

Projections have shown for the last twenty years or so, that 2030 is going to be around the tipping point where white folks fall under 50% of the population, and unless there is some serious ethnic cleansing happening, that isn't going to change. It's just the facts with immigration, with falling birthrates--even with the Quiverfull movement--and economics and culture, white folks will fall under 50%, and while they'll still be the most numerous of blended ethnicities to go under easily identified terms as white, black, brown or the other colors of America's rainbow. And that scares the bejeebus out of folks. So much so, that they supported Donald F*cking Trump for President just to get in someone to derail the census to stave off fact-based redistricting.

Donnie has their support, not so much because of a fear of his base, or their turning, but because they NEEDED those votes to keep their jobs in the future, and that won't be possible if they have to base districts on the actual populations, so skewing the Census was a key. It's a matter of money, power, and the convergent needs of racists and corporate grifters coming together. The GOP doesn't want to be in bed with these jackholes, and The Lincoln Project bears that out, but they were willing to hold their nose long enough to keep the Census from getting skewed for another decade to let them try to figure out how to keep their phoney-baloney jobs in the government a while longer, and how to keep the money pipe concentrated on their friends.

Thanks for TFA, subby. It was a long, infuriating read.

There were so many parts that really pissed me off but I'm sick of reading statements like this:

"At one point that day, a State Department official told me that what I was experiencing wasn't racism, because personally, he had no issues crossing the border as a white man"

Full disclaimer: I'm a white man. But I'm so farking tired of hearing other white men make excuses for blatant racism. At some point can we start believing people of color when they talk about their experiences with racism?

I've had plenty of "spinal tap" border crossings too. Not for the cucumber in the pants bit but let's just say I've had to get guys out of jails in seven different counties.
Once, we were coming back into the states in northern Idaho from Alberta in the middle of October. Winter came early and in was 40 below at night. Our van broke down at the border and the Americans would let us in ( we are Americans that live in Oregon.)
We push our van back into Canada and get our van going but the heater died. The Americans stopped us again and accused us of selling our heater for money. That turned I to a huge debacle where they wanted us to pull all of our gear out of the van but it was grazing in place. It took us eight hours- until another staff of customs agents came on- before they let us go.

I got on the list while I was going back and forth all the time in Laredo while tending to a maquila. I watched them let a guy in with no ID except a phone bill, I kid you not.  I asked why they put us all through the lines and the scrutiny if they just let people in with a piece of paper? Made the list. Every damned time for six months after that I was diverted to "the room".  Every time I had to explain that the fishing worms I had were samples, not bombs and that their machine was stupid. To the same people even.  Kafkaesque.

This was my gut thing, too...  This person represents multiple triggering mechanisms for the kind of guy attracted to CBP jobs:

1. Young and pretty, but doesn't want to bone him
2. Better educated and accomplished, so "biatch thinks she's all that."
3. She's not white, which makes her higher status even more unacceptable

One or two guys decided she was an "uppity biatch," after she had the nerve to question their authoritah.  They spread her description around, and it became a coordinated game.  The only reason it didn't escalate beyond this level of harassment was that their supervisor would have frowned on the extra paper work.
This story could have been even worse: The whole situation has all of the ingredients that lead to sexual assault if the opportunity had presented itself.

I've lived in the DC area for decades, and this place is stuffed to the gills with foreign diplomats.  They are treated with kid gloves by all local law enforcement, even when they do felonious things like drive drunk and date-rape and beat their domestic servants and shoplift and assault.

Before living here, I spent a childhood overseas as the daughter of a Foreign Service Officer, and I traveled on a diplomatic passport.  We were always whisked through whatever border we crossed, even the skeevier ones like Sudan and Ethiopia.  But we were white.  One of the reasons that the State Department was slow to hire African-Americans as diplomats was, get this, they were worried that blacks would be treated badly in foreign countries.

And yea -- I didn't see the Lincoln Project video that's greened before I wrote this, but I'm not the only one saying this, over, and over, and over. And over. And over.

I had the opposite experience.
I fit into their drug smuggling profile, so I got checked before every flight before 9/11.
Since I do not fit into their terrorist profile I get treated like everyone else since 9/11, but they do check everyone more than they used to.

Some one fetch me my fainting couch. I don't think I can take the surprise.

hubiestubert: Seriously, folks, what CAN black people do?

What's horrifying is that, despite this, I still know a few black people who are going to vote for Trump.  Because ... reasons?  God and Jesus and who-the-hell-know-why?

Building Solidarity feels impossible.

I learned a long time ago how to pass.  Put on the right clothes, remove jewelry, cover ink.  Even grew a beard to be as "white hetero male" as possible.  It's great: put on a shirt and tie and you never get searched or stopped.  You just have to have the right skin-tone and undercarriage!

Can't look 'Murrican-male?  Get ready for delays, suspicion, and bullshiat.  My boss likes tie-die shirts and isn't "conventionally pretty", so business trips she gets attention.  Even gets random drug tests when she gets back from trips.  Not me though.  I'm still mad at how well it works.  When I travel alone I've even gotten upgraded to business class or first class a few times.  That never happened when I looked more "student" or "liberal".

bthom37: kbronsito: I got stopped by some immigration aholes while travelling back on a official US government passport.

Remember, Border Patrol is for the folks too dumb to be cops.

Given the cops I have seen, and the ones in the news from time to time, that seems like a vanishingly small pool of people from whom to choose.

CBP is the enforcement arm of this misadministration's white power wet-dream. Emperor Hirocheeto expanded their ranks and appointed 'leaders' who create policy without much (if any) oversight, frequently policies which are racist and occasionally crimes against humanity. CBP is the misadministrations "go-to" team when they need willing muscle to get their way about anything. Note how the Derpublicans screech and gibber and foam at the mouth at the thought of expanding any government agency- unless said agency is involved with harassing/subjugating poor, non-white, non-christian, non-heterosexual, non-male citizens and visitors.

There have been media reports over the last decade or so documenting abuses by CBP. Those abuses became more overt and indefensible once Piggy McTinyhands appointed his Stephen Miller's Klan buddies to positions of power within the agency. CBP is out of control. There's been at least one report of CBP and Homie Scrutiny officials ignoring Congressional subpoenas, and multiple reports of CBP violating court orders. Remember that this is the agency which cheerfully separated families and locked children in cages. We've allowed Marmalade Mussolini and Yertle to build a paramilitary RW goon squad, and the misadministration has been increasingly using them as such ... against American citizens.

Assuming we can rid ourselves of the Lesser Orange Bellowing shiatgibbon (and his followers and enablers), CBP needs to be scourged of every single brownshirt who followed illegal orders and/or violated laws regarding equal treatment. Evidence of complicity in crimes against humanity must result in immediate suspension (without pay) for every CBP officer so charged, followed by a trial in Federal Court. Requiring the agency to follow the same rules as other law-enforcement agencies (especially warrants) and removing the stupid 100-mile rule would go far toward reducing future abuses of power, but the only way to convince the rank-and-file to actually follow the law is through vigorous prosecution and severe punishment upon conviction. Permanently remove their powers of arrest for any offense not directly related to border security, and remove all their legal authority outside their posts.

- Catch someone crossing a border illegally? CBP can hold the accused until federal law enforcement (FBI, US Marshalls, etc) takes custody of the alleged criminal. All Constitutional restrictions and requirements for federal law enforcement apply (Miranda warnings, access to legal representation, etc).
- Catch someone smuggling contraband over a border? Detain them until the smuggler is turned over to local, state, or federal law enforcement.
- Suspect someone encountered in a grocery store in East Bumfarkistan might be in the country illegally? Call the local cops, because the grocery store is not a border crossing and CBP employees are just private citizens when they're not working at a border crossing.

CBP needs to exist in some form or another- there are valid reasons for having a border security agency- but they need to be reined in. Strict regulations and laws must be established to enforce accountability with Congressional oversight. Any government entity tasked with enforcing the laws must be held to a higher standard than the general population. CBP doesn't appear to be held to any standards. This needs to change. Now.

Nope- there are loads of Americans stupidly eager to harass anyone "different". They aren't a major problem most of the time, because they're generally scattered around the country in enclaves of farkwits amid a much larger population of people who can count above ten with shoes on. A lot of these weak-minded people will gravitate toward authoritarian jobs such as CBP, which tends to concentrate their numbers. Replace the people making policy decisions (without any effective oversight by Congress) with Deranged shiatweasels, and the thick-witted CBP agents are essentially given carte blanche to indulge in all of their racist fantasies without consequences.

Any country has always had a small percentage of its members who are incapable of functioning in a civilized society. They're usually easy to ignore, because they tend to be just smart enough to realize bad things will happen if they act on their racist fantasies or even speak those fantasies aloud. For a variety of bad reasons, racist shiatweasels in the US have been allowed to concentrate their stupidityness in law-enforcement agencies all over the country.

And the Derpublicans have been encouraging these racist-farkwits-with-badges to give in to their darkest impulses in a vain attempt to prevent the "master race" from losing its grip on power. This November, we have to get rid of every politician giving tacit support to these neobarbarians, and they need to be overwhelmingly rejected by the voters. If the result is fairly close, the possibility of political violence becomes much more likely.

When discussing CBP (in particular) and the Department of Homie Scrutiny (in general), remember it was CBP who separated kids from their families, locked them up in cages, and "lost" a lot of those kids. Remember how many people detained by CBP- including children- have died in their custody. We forgot that many of our fellow Americans actively dislike the promise of freedom and equality this country supposedly represented, and we allowed these deeply stupid people to commit atrocities without consequences. We allowed this shiat to happen, and we are all permanently stained by that fact.

That's where the hope is, they (we) ARE slipping under 50%.  I've substitute taught enough classes to see the pattern:  if one group is a majority, the majority plays with the majority, and everyone else has their back against the wall.  If no group is a majority, everyone plays with everyone, for the most part.

Another 20 years and we're gonna be fine, if we make it past "white power last gasp".

Ummmmm, no.

Or to put it more bluntly NO NO NO.

I am 54 years old and I have been hearing "it's just the old folks and all we have to do is outlive racists" since 1976.

It's not going away by itself.

the high frequency of border crossings is the issue.  not her skin color.  traveling across the border to work out at the gym requires a blue passport as it is not part of her duties as a Foreign Service officer.  she was abusing her office and it was raising suspicions.

it's clear that many in this thread have never traveled on a diplomatic passport.

Before living here, I spent a childhood overseas as the daughter of a Foreign Service Officer, and I traveled on a diplomatic passport.

you were traveling for official business (which includes limited return visits to the US while stationed abroad), the woman who wrote the article, by her own admission, using her diplomatic passport and status for personal travel.   that's a red flag, she could be trying to use her status to smuggle.  it's a real problem, ask the US military.

HairBolus: I wonder if the CBP troglodytes got off on harassing a young pretty black woman who was better educated than them with a better job.

It does strike me that a lot of this is, in addition to racism, about class. I remember reading an minority AV tech describing coming back from a shoot with a vehicle full of gear and the border guy emptied the vehicle from what I remember, because he was angry that the television guy had a better job than him.

That aside, if she played her cards right she could have me.

I'm not a person of color, but this makes me so angry. I can't imagine the stress she was under, but I just want to line up all of these racist a-holes and give them some of their own treatment.

At least a diplomat has the ability to expose this shiat in the newspaper, and hopefully shame the crap out of some people up the chain of command.
The other thousands of people who are treated the same or worse all day, every day basically have zero recourse.
